Sri Lanka's Aitken Spence sells port stake to China Merchants
COLOMBO | Mon Jan 23, 2012 3:30am EST Jan 23 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan conglomerate Aitken Spence on Monday said it is selling its 30 percent stake in a $500 million port expansion joint venture to Hong Kong-based China Merchants Holdings. Earlier this month, Spence pulled out of the joint venture with the state-run Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) and China Merchants Holdings due to high costs and unreasonable demands, officials have said. Aitken Spence in a statement to the Colombo Stock Exchange said Sri Lanka's Board of Investment and the SLPA had approved the sale to China Merchant. The company did not disclose how much it was to be paid. China Merchant upon completion of the transaction will own 85 percent of China International Container Terminal, the joint venture operating company set up to build the Colombo south terminal. SLPA will continue to hold 15 percent. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...8CN4PO20120123 |

Kankesanthurai Harbour wreck removal complete
R. K. RADHAKRISHNAN The lifeline of the Jaffna peninsula, the Kankesanthurai harbour, is clear of all shipwrecks, in record time. The Indian Foreign Minister, S.M. Krishna, on Wednesday announced the completion of works at the KKS harbour. Now, dredging works will be taken up after which construction of break water will be done. The removal is expected to facilitate trade-connectivity with the Jaffna peninsula and revive economic activity in Northern Province. Mr. Krishna assured that India was ready to provide further assistance for the next phase of the project, including dredging and the rehabilitation of the pier and port infrastructure. Earlier, the Government of India, through the Shipping Corporation of India, had awarded a contract for removal and disposal of six wrecks at KKS harbour to Resolve Salvage and Fire (Asia) Pvt Ltd, Singapore at a total cost of US$ 19 million (SLRs 2.18 billion). Removal works began in April. And additional four wrecks were found and the process of getting additional sanction for removal was taken up only in October last year. And, these were removed too. The KKS rehabilitation project includes six stages, namely, Preliminary Hydrographic Survey, Geotechnical investigations and preparation of Detailed Project Report, Wreck removal and disposal, Dredging, Rehabilitation of breakwater/pier and construction of new pier with attendant port facilities and Final Hydrographic Survey and preparation of Harbour Chart. The dredging of the harbour will be undertaken by the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI). Sri Lanka ship supply base for GAC
Feb 07, 2012 (LBO) - Global ship agency and offshore marine service provider GAC has set up a supply base in Galle to support ship-to-ship (STS) services, a statement said. The move, by GAC's in-house ship-to-ship transfer unit GAC Transfer Services (GTS), was in response to growing demand for LPG (liquid petroleum gas) imports and exports of clean products in the Indian Subcontinent. Ship-to-ship (STS) equipment such as fenders and hoses will be stored at GAC's base in the southern port of Galle, ready to be transported by tug to different locations according to demand and conditions, the statement said. Lars Bergstrom, GAC Group Vice President - Indian Subcontinent, said the choice of Sri Lanka as the regional base for STS operations would help ship operators avoid incurring high costs or getting caught up in red tape. "India is a very important market with growing demand for STS, but there are logistical issues due to bureaucracy and high costs of locating there," he said. "Thanks to its proximity to that market, and its key geographical position close to major east-west shipping lanes, Sri Lanka was a natural choice for the expansion of STS services to the region." The main commodities handled include LPG, crude oil, fuel oil and gas oils. Most operations will be carried out 'Off Port Limits' (OPL) without any port authority intervention, GAC said. The end of the island's 30-year ethnic war in 2009 and later removal of a war risk rating by London-based insurers opened the way for the expansion of GAC's STS operations, it said. The new service complements existing services such as ship agency, bunker supplies and the ship supply service. GAC Sri Lanka uses a fleet of ten high speed service craft to deliver supplies and personnel to vessels in international shipping lanes without them having to deviate from their course. http://www.gac.com/gac/NewsShow.aspx?id=57172 Quote:

Mærsk containership drydocks at Colombo Dockyard
The emergence of Colombo, Sri Lanka, as a hub for container traffic, is making leading containership operators consider using Colombo Dockyard for their repair requirements, both afloat and in dry dock, now that earlier war time restrictions have been lifted. Last month, A.P. Møller-Mærsk's 1,118 TEU, 13,769 dwt Mærsk Ronneby, built in 2007, called in for her first special survey and drydocking repairs. Colombo Dockyard says it was selected after few rounds of negations and a site visit by a superintendent to the facility. The Colombo shipyard was the best option for the owners/ managers given its strategic location. The vessel discharged her containers in Colombo and shifted directly into drydocks for her repairs. The repairs were completed within 10 days, one day ahead of the quoted period The work package covered repairs in all sectors. It included: Hull blasting and painting, blasting of area approx 1,200 sq.m and special painting of the hull with a Jotun 5-years system. Repairs to Cell guides, hatch cover repairs, fabrication of new platforms, load testing of deck cranes free fall tests of lifeboat davit, load testing of other lifting appliances. Rudder work. Main engine turbocharger overhauling. Renewal of pipelines with special material . Controllable pitch propeller blade seal renewals. Overhaul of bow thruster unit. Main engine liner horning work. The vessel was accommodated in the shipyard's 30,000 dwt drydock and sailed out direct from the drydocks to the loading berth in the port of Colombo. http://www.marinelog.com/index.php?o...ews&Itemid=193 |

Sri Lanka port terminal lures back shipping line
Mar 20, 2012 (LBO) - A state-run container terminal in Sri Lanka's Colombo port has won back Japan's NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) Line, which is a partner of the G6 Alliance of carriers formed last December. The 8,200 TEU vessel 'MV NYK Virgo', operated by G6 Alliance partner NYK Line had its inaugural call at the Jaye Container Terminal (JCT) of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), on March 18, a statement said. The G6 Alliance, serving the Asia-to-Europe-and-Mediterranean market, is composed of the carriers in the Grand Alliance and New World Alliance: APL, Hapag-Lloyd AG, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Mitsui O.S.K Lines, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Orient Overseas Container Line. Nihal Kappetipola, Managing Director of the SLPA said improved terminal efficiency with new cranes and computer systems had helped it win back NYK Line, "This has been evidenced by the G6 Alliance with the lead line NYK coming back to the state-run JCT after 10 years." The service calls Colombo under the following voyage rotation: Kaohsiung – Xiamen – South China – Hong Kong - Singapore – Colombo – Southampton - Antwerp – Hamburg – Rotterdam – Jebel Ali – Singapore – South China – Kaohsiung. http://www.lankabusinessonline.com/f...nid=1489862344 |

Beruwala to get Lanka’s first Marina
With seven star hotel, aquarium, museum and entertainment park: ![]() In keeping with the expected growth in the boat building industry, the Ministry of Fisheries will construct Marinas in Beruwala and Colombo. The country’s first Marina will be build adjoining Beruwala fisheries harbour. These projects are at the infant stage and will be completed with substantial investment both locally and internationally, Boat Building Technology Improvement Institute Managing Director Gamini B. Herath told Daily News Business . “The land for the Beruwala Marina is ear marked. Once the proposal stage is finalized there will be not only a boat park but aquarium, museum and entertainment park. The highlight of the Beruwala marina will be the seven star hotel planned to be built simultaneously,” he said. The entire land complex of the proposed Marina will be integrated to facilitate leisure, pleasure and commercial activities. “We will promote Beruwala Marina as a yacht entry point and will set up customs and immigration offices to facilitate the process. These are on the pipeline and will be completed within a time frame after the initial stages are finalized,” he said. Two experts from the UK Mike Derret, a Marina expert and Simon Arrol, a boat making and park expert who have experience in working in Dubai, Thailand, Vietnam and China are having a detailed discussion regarding these projects. Discussions are underway to find investors for Beruwala Marina. The Colombo Marina will follow with the finalization of Beruwala project with the assistance of the Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Export Development Board where they closely monitor the progress. Meanwhile the boat building industry has been identified as a thrust industry where export earnings are expected to top 0.5 billion by 2015. Boat earnings from the sector have steadily increased over the years and last year US $ 124 revenue was generated through exports. The industry sees an upward trend in demand regarding the leisure and pleasure sectors. The growth is expected to fuel by the recent decision to ban import of second hand boats where local exporters will benefit on the long run. Sri Lanka vehicle transshipping drive flagged off by Hyundai
June 6, 2012 (LBO) - Vehicle transshipment from Sri Lanka is getting underway, with Asia's second largest automaking group starting to use a new port in the south of the island, where up to four vessels are expected to call each month, a logistics firm said.
Two vessels operated by Hyundai Glovis Co Ltd, a unit of Korea's Hyundai Kia group, Asia's second largest car maker after Toyota and the fourth largest in the world, will berth at Sri Lanka's Hambantota port in June, the lines agents Aitken Spence Shipping Ltd, said. Several vessels are expected to call at the port each month, following the berthing of the first vessel 'Asian Sun' on June 06 with 1,000 vehicles, the agents said. "The volume of Hyundai transshipment vehicles via the port of Hambantota is expected to grow substantially with 3 to 4 vehicle carriers expected to call each month," Aitken Spence Shipping said in a statement. The shipping agency said the port had a yard which can hold 10,000 vehicles. The 'Asian Sun' had a cargo of cars made at a Hyundai Motors plant in Chennai, India, to be transshipped to Europe and Africa. On June 17, another Hyundai Glovis car carrier, 'Asian Legend' will come to Hambantota to pick up the cars. The line as a 30-vessel fleet, serving North and South America, Europe, Asia, Oceania and Africa, and is a logistics unit of the Hyundai Kia group. Sri Lanka's state-run ports agency said better rates, fast turnaround and a dedicated terminal is offered to car carriers to transship from Hambantota. Sri Lanka Ports Authority said vehicle transshipping from the island's main port in Colombo had slacked off during the last three year due to congestion and some lines had also upped freight rates for car imports due to delays.

Sri Lanka's Chinese-built port opens for business
(AFP) – 4 hours ago COLOMBO — Sri Lanka's first Chinese-built port, a strong symbol of Beijing's investment in South Asia, opened for international shipping on Wednesday with the handling of 1,000 cars from India. The $1.5-billion deep-sea port in southern Hambantota, the home constituency of President Mahinda Rajapakse, straddles a major east-west shipping lane used by 200 to 300 international vessels daily. The idea of the project, which was delayed by just over a year, is to create a new logistics hub to handle trans-shipments from the Asian region and provide a boost to Sri Lanka's economy as it recovers from decades of civil war. Regional power India turned down the offer to construct the deep-sea port saying it was not commercially viable, but China's presence created unease in New Delhi which views Sri Lanka as being firmly in its sphere of influence. China has since agreed to build a second port in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo and Chinese firms have pledged investments amounting to $50 billion spread over the next 10 to 15 years, according to Sri Lanka's trade ministry. The car carrier Asian Sun docked on Wednesday morning to be received by Sri Lanka Port Authority Chairman Priyath Wickrama. FULL STORY: http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp...e1cda88a09.571 |
