Simohamed,

Catholic Church at Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
Igreja da Lapinha - built in 1770 Have a look at my thread: 82 pictures: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...256&highlight= Outside: neogothic style (newer part) ![]() Outside: portuguese colonial style (older part) ![]() Inside: totally moorish 55. ![]() 57. (they told me it's written in arabic: "this is the house of god; this is door of heaven" - is it correct?) ![]() 71. ![]() 80. ![]() 81. ![]() Unfortunatelly, it's not in portuguese, but you can see the pictures. The church firstly was build in front of the sea, but since a long time its entrance looks to the Caaba (Mecca). People that work there told me that a long time ago it could be a mosque! We don't know anything about this mistery: could have been built by islamic slaves, we don't know.

Have a look to see other details! The other moorish church (this one is completely moorish - inside and outside) is at Rio de Janeiro. Take a look. Its name is: Basílica do Imaculado Coração de Maria ![]() http://www.flickr.com/photos/53796524@N06/4974014059/ ![]() http://www.flickr.com/photos/claudio...n/photostream/

I never saw this thread, I got it due to a recomendation, cool, but you shouldn't talk about islamic art, it would be the same than talking about christian art, so many differences and so many origins.
But I'm afraid that the main elements posted as moroccan, are not. For example, the excellent brick work is a development of the roman Spain, with better examples in the mediaeval ages. _The horseshoe arch is super spanish, something really typical spanish, a creation of the celtiberian culture followed during the gothic times, there are dozens of churches from the V century in this style all over the country, with nice vegetal decorations in a very baroque way, (this baroque decorations would become higher in the andalousian islamic age), the colors red and white and the double arches come from the roman aqueducts linked with the celtiberian culture. _We must remember that the iberian population was always there, and their art followed, evoluting with their rich culture, changing from one religion to another for 200 years, in a beginning the arrian christianism and the proto-islam was almost the same in concepts until the IX century, when Islam was encripted and the differences got bigger and official, more duties for the people (in this century there are dozens of revolutions in the andalousian cities because of this changes, some of these iberian citizens cross to the old roman province of Mauretania Tingitana (actual Morocco) and refounded some of the cities. _The work in tiles is very traditional of the south of Spain, with good examples of the roman times, and also from the byzantine area (the oriental roman empire), which had very good relations with the south of Spain in that time. _About the lobed arches, it has an andalousian origin following the iberian-roman tradition of some roman windows found in Cordoba, used firstly in the Temple of Cordoba (in that time Islam wasn't encripted yet) some investigators say that until IX century, the old roman pagan temple remodelated into an arrian temple was at the same time the temple of the proto-islamic, really similar religions (against the roman christianism and the trinitarian precepts, more common in the central-north Spain) But evoluted into super baroque structures in the XII century including in this time oriental traditions which arrived to Mauretania Tingitana, recently occuped by a southern culture (some governors and an army) which form today Morocco. In this time we can talk thas this oriental influences made a local type of super baroque decorations, like the domes. _It's hard to talk about a moorish architecture, a real one, since France occupied the north of Africa and every 'islamic architecture and art' was named as moorish when the romantic culture made every exotic topic into a fashionable topic, and Africa was exotic enough to take that name into that art. _Every element arised in Spain following the ancient cultures with some influences but was exported all over the mediterranean and evoluted with it in each place, the same happened with the byzantian architecture. So, some of the buildings should be called byzantian architecture in the world, and others, andalousian architecture in the world. 'Moorish architecture has been introduced by films and other things because of the exotic factor' In the schools of architecture be sure that the moorish archtiecture as a line doesn't exist. This could be explained due to the late emergence of an urban culture ( which uses to create the science, culture and art), actually the only moroccan big city which existed in that time, was Tanger, because Tetuan was established as a city in XIV century on a small village, Fez in the IX century, Marrakech founded in the XI century, Rabat in the XII century on the ruins of a roman campament and fortification and Casablanca was a village around the XV century, abandoned during 300 years and created from zero in the XVIII century almost the XIX century. So, it's hard for an historian and an architect to think that a moorish architecture could have been created in an area without an urban culture. This is something to think about, don't you think so?
