Many regions in northern Vietnam are separated by a canal, dike, river, etc
Back in the ancient days, people didn't have the luxury of building bridges, and boats were very inconvenient to get around, therefore they formed their own villages on either sides of the river. As a result we see many "Dinh" clustered in close proximity

I sêe that it doesn't change much now ,as for the churches built within close proximity of each other .I saw it in Bảo Lộc and Phong Nha,even if they have a bridge that links one bank of the river to the other.
