Thailand as most popular Asian destination

Thailand was named the "Asia's Most Popular Destination" for ninth year in a row by Go Asia, a marketing network that specialises in marketing Asia as a destination for travellers.

Members of the Go Asia network including tour operators, airlines, and tourism boards are eligible to vote in the poll. The award, together with many more extended to Thai organisations, was recently announced at the International Tourism Exchange (ITB) Berlin 2012, the world's leading B2B platform for the travel and tourism industry.

The network also honoured Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) as the "Best Asian Tourism Board". This is the fourth year in a row that they have also recognised the TAT as the best Asian tourism board.

Also in this year’s Go Asia awards, Thai Airways International received the "Best Asian Airline" award. In the private sector, the "Best Hotel in Asia" awards went to the Peninsula Bangkok, Siam@Siam Design Hotel & Spa, and the Mandarin Oriental Dara Dhevi in Chiang Mai.

"The TAT is honoured to again receive such a high level of recognition from those in the travel and tourism industry. The Thailand brand has tremendous appeal for millions of visitors from all over the world, while the Kingdom’s tourism sector strives to offer an everincreasing variety of unique and memorable experiences for visitors. This award will inspire us to continue developing Thailand as a destination of choice for international travellers from the Germanspeaking regions of Europe," said TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni at the ITB Go Asia Award gala night.

เอกชนท่องเที่ยวเสนอ "ยิ่งลักษณ์" หนุนประเทศไทย สร้างสวนสนุกดีสนีย์แลนด์แข่งสิงคโปร์-ฮ่องกง ชี้ใช้เงินลงทุนไม่ต่ำกว่า2หมื่นล้าน

นายศิษฎิวัตร ชีวรัตนพร นายกสมาคมไทยธุรกิจการท่องเที่ยว (แอตต้า) เปิดเผยว่า การประชุมหารือร่วมกันระหว่างภาครัฐและเอกชนท่องเที่ยว อย่าง การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย (ททท.) แอตต้า สมาคมโรงแรมไทย (ทีเอชเอ) กับ น.ส.ยิ่งลักษณ์ ชินวัตร นายกรัฐมนตรี ในวันที่ 21 มี.ค.นี้ ที่ทำเนียบรัฐบาล เพื่อวางแนวทางการแก้ไขปัญหาต่างๆที่เข้ามากระทบต่อภาพลักษณ์การท่องเที่ยวไทย รวมถึงวางแนวทางการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวให้มีรายได้ตามเป้าหมายที่รัฐบาลตั้งไว้ในอีก 3 ปีข้างหน้า 2.2 ล้านล้านบาท


ทั้งนี้แอตต้าจะเสนอให้นายกรัฐมนตรี พิจารณาส่งเสริมให้ประเทศไทยสร้างสวนสนุกดีสนีย์แลนด์ ผ่าน 2 แนวทาง ได้แก่ ภาครัฐเป็นผู้ลงทุนสวนสนุกดังกล่าวเอง และ 2 สนับสนุนให้เอกชนที่สนใจเข้ามาลงทุนได้รับการส่งเสริมจากคณะกรรมการส่งเสริมการลงทุน (บีโอไอ) อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม เพื่อผลักดันให้ประเทศไทยมีสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวใหม่ๆนำเสนอนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งชาวไทยและต่างประเทศ

นอกจากนี้ต้องการให้ภาครัฐสร้างแหล่งท่องเที่ยวที่ใช้เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของเมืองไทย เพื่อสร้างจุดขายใหม่ๆ โดยจะเห็นได้ว่าช่วงที่ผ่านมา ประเทศไทยไม่มีการลงทุนสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวที่เกิดจากมนุษย์สร้างขึ้นมา ขณะที่เพื่อนบ้าน อย่างสิงคโปร์ ฮ่องกง มาเลเซีย ได้เปิดแหล่งท่องเที่ยวใหม่อย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยเฉพาะสวนสนุกซึ่งทั้งสิงโปร์ และฮ่องกงใช้เป็นจุดขายในการดึงนักท่องเที่ยว

"ผมเชื่อว่าถ้ารัฐบาลส่งเสริมการลงทุนดีสนีย์แลนด์อย่างจริงจัง จะมีผู้สนใจทันที ซึ่งในวงการท่องเที่ยวได้ทราบข่าวว่านักธุรกิจรายใหญ่ของไทยให้ความสนใจลงทุนเช่นกัน แต่ต้องมีภาพการสนับสนุนที่ชัดเจน"นายศิษฎิวัตรกล่าว

สำหรับเม็ดเงินลงทุนก่อสร้างสวนสนุก คาดว่าต้องใช้งบประมาณก่อสร้าง การลงทุนเครื่องเล่นไม่ต่ำกว่า 2 หมื่นล้าน แต่จะเป็นจุดขายในระยะยาว โดยเฉพาะประเทศไทยจะได้เปรียบประเทศคู่แข่ง เพราะมีความหลากหลายของสินค้าทางการท่องเที่ยวเป็นทุนเดิม

นายศิษฎิวัชร กล่าวว่า นอกจากนี้จะเสนอมาตรการดูแลรักษาความปลอดภัยให้กับนักท่องเที่ยว ปัญหาการหลอกลวงนักท่องเที่ยว โดยมองว่าต้องเข้าไม่แก้ไขทั้งระบบ โดยทุกฝ่ายต้องให้ความร่วมมือจากส่วนกลางและท้องถิ่น

Chiefs set B2-trillion 2015 goal

The government and major tourism organisations agreed on reforms for the industry to generate 2 trillion baht in revenue by 2015.

Representatives from five tourism organisations and related government agencies met at a workshop yesterday to hammer out a deal. They will meet again in two months to monitor progress.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has agreed to be the presenter for the country's new tourism campaigns.

A report of the Federation of Thai Tourism Associations (Fetta) highlights the declining competitiveness of Thai tourism while other countries including China, Indonesia, Vietnam and some in the Middle East are working to improve their quality.

A World Economic Forum report last year ranked Thailand 41st for tourism competitiveness in Asia Pacific, while Singapore was 32nd, Malaysia 35th and China 39th.

The problems facing Thailand include deterioration of tourism sites and a lack of new products and attractions. Tourism facilities are far below global standards.

Fetta spokesman Charoen Wangananont said tourism revenue could reach 2 trillion baht in 2015 if the state and the private sector implement their plans.

Of this amount, 1.45 trillion baht would come from foreign tourists and the rest from domestic travellers.

Last year's tourism revenue hit 1.13 trillion baht _ 730 billion from foreign tourists and 400 billion from locals.

In a related development, the Immigration Bureau will introduce an automatic passport-checking channel for Thais by April 11 to solve the long queues and chaos at Suvarnabhumi airport.

The government has agreed to end a requirement for Thai and other Asean nationals to fill out arrival and departure documents.

Other Asean countries have already cancelled these documents.

A federal budget for a project to improve the skills and add licensing of local guides was also approved.

Fetta also proposed the government try to persuade Disney to build a theme park in Thailand due to all the tourists it would draw.

แหล่งท่องเที่ยวไทยเจ๋ง กูเกิลลัดคิว เปิดสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวไทยผ่านสตรีทวิว 360 องศา เป็นประเทศที่ 35 ของโลก นำร่อง 3จังหวัด หนุนนักท่องเที่ยวไทย-เทศเดินทางโต 25%

นายสุรพล เศวตเศรนี ผู้ว่าการการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย (ททท.) เปิดเผยว่า ททท.ได้ร่วมมือกับ กูเกิล ประเทศไทย จัดทำแผนที่ภาพถ่ายสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวในประเทศไทย แบบสตรีทวิว ภาพถ่ายพาราโนมา ที่สามารถมองเห็นวิวบนท้องถนนได้ 360 องศา เพื่อให้นักท่องเที่ยวได้เปิดประสบการณ์ประเทศไทย เรียนรู้วิถีชีวิต ศิลปวัฒนธรรมไทย ซึ่งจะช่วยกระตุ้นให้เกิดการตัดสินเดินทางมาประเทศไทย

Pattaya Wins Major Travel Destination Award.

Pattaya, the popular Thailand resort, has just been named Golf Destination of the Year 2012 for Australasia and Asia.

The Mayor of the City of Pattaya, along with representatives from several of the regions golf clubs, accepted their award yesterday in Turkey on the final night of the International Golf Travel Market.

The nominees for 2012 included Malaysia, New Zealand, Vietnam plus Thailand's Hua Hin, Pattaya and Phuket regions.

This prestigious award was voted for by over 400 global tour operator members of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).


Previous winners included Malaysia and Thailand, but this is the first time that an actual region has won this award. Spain, the United States and Thailand are currently the big three international golf destinations, with Turkey and Portugal among developing countries that were rapidly increasing their golf tourism sectors.
The Mayor of Pattaya City, Itthiphol Kunplome accepting the award said, 'Pattaya is already well known as a resort destination, however I hope that by winning this award, it will help give the destination a higher profile, and through increased marketing budgets, elevate Pattaya as a top international golf destination.'


Peter Walton President and Chief Executive of IGATO, said,' The main reasons why they won this award, were that our members found that Pattaya offered quality golf courses, good management, great service, value for money, and most importantly, that the local agents and tourist board were particularly supportive both to our members and of course their clients.'Mike Mesommonta, spokesman for the Eastern Seaboard Golf Management Association added,' this award is a huge endorsement for all our members, who have worked very hard to create some top class golf courses in the region. Our courses attract thousands of foreign visitors and several major International Tournaments every year, including the Thailand Open, the Pattaya Open and the Honda LPGA Open. PM invites singer Nichkhun

Nichkhun Horvejkul, the Thai member of the South Korean boy band 2PM, has been approached to join Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's upcoming "roadshow" to South Korea, a source said yesterday.

There were no other details from Government House. Nichkhun, who is also a model and actor, could not be reached to comment on the matter.

Yingluck, who recently led her government's first "roadshow" to Japan, is set to make her official visit to South Korea from Saturday until next Tuesday (March 24-27). She'll be aiming to restore confidence among South Korean investors following last year's flood crisis. The PM also is scheduled to attend the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul with leaders from 51 other countries. She'll meet with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak for discussions on bilateral trade, investment and cooperation on agriculture, military, labour and tourism.

Yingluck is also expected to meet top figures in South Korea's public and private sectors.

Songkran is coming: Where will you get wet?

All over Thailand, Songkran revelers pile into the backs of pickup trucks and ride through the streets armed with water guns, buckets and barrels of water


The Thai new year -- a k a Songkran -- kicks off next week, from April 13-16, plunging the country into all-out chaos that includes four days of water fights and non-stop partying.

In Bangkok, the biggest Songkran parties swamp Silom Road, RCA and Khao San Road, though splashing and festivities take place on any given road in the city.

Visitors can head to any Bangkok temple to witness the non-chaotic, traditional side of Songkran celebrations.

What is it?
Songkran, Thailand's most popular festival, marks the beginning of the new solar year and the summer season in Thailand.

This year it officially starts on April 13 (though some cities start celebrating a couple of days earlier) and lasts between three and five days, depending on location.

Traditionally, families and friends celebrate Songkran by visiting temples and splashing water on each other as a wish for a year filled with good luck.

Over the years, the holiday has evolved into a nationwide water fight and a fantastic reason to travel and party. Book ahead before you hit the road though, as buses/trains/hotels are packed with both Thai and international travelers over the Songkran period.

Where to celebrate

Songkran. The only time of year when it's perfectly acceptable to pick on someone smaller than you.

Residents in some Thai towns splash water in the streets for just one day, which is picked by local officials. Check before you travel.

Other towns extend the holiday into a full week of ceremonies, water fights, concerts and other festivities.
Here are three of the many big festivals around Thailand that provide a dose of both watery chaos and traditional culture.

Songkran Festival, Chiang Mai, April 12-15, 2012
Chiang Mai is the wildest place to celebrate Songkran in Thailand. Festivities begin with an opening ceremony that includes a colorful procession around Chiang Mai city.

Visitors and locals pour scented water on a Buddha image and on elders.

You can check out traditional Lanna cultural performances and join in massive water fights that take place on just about every street.

Things get crazy at night, with celebrations continuing well into the morning.

One of the biggest parties comes courtesy of Chiang Mai's Club Martini, which hosts three nights of Thai and international DJs manning the decks for its Songkran celebrations.


Old City Songkran Festival, Ayutthaya, April 13, 2012
In Ayutthaya, elephants take part in the battle. Just like in the old days. This year, Songkran festivities in the ancient capital of Ayutthaya will be celebrated around the island city and ancient moat of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.
The festival focuses on the ancient customs and traditions of Songkran that have been observed through the centuries.

Visitors can join residents in traditional Songkran merit-making activities to seek blessings for the New Year.

Ayutthaya is also famous for its elephant corral. If you don’t mind getting drenched with water mixed with a bit of pachyderm snot, join the elephants and their mahouts for some Songkran battle action.

Other popular Thai new year highlights in Ayutthaya include the Miss Songkran beauty contest and the Grand Songkran procession.

Si Satchanalai Songkran Festival, Sukhothai, April 13-15, 2012Residents of the historic town of Sukhothai celebrate Songkran in the traditional Thai way at Traphang Thong temple in front of the Sukhothai Historical Park.

There's a traditional market in the town square, sand-pagoda building contest, Songkran beauty contest and ancient cart procession.

Most people will be dressed in traditional Thai costumes.

Water festival draws crowds across country

Tourists enjoy the Songkran fun yesterday on Khao San Road.

People have flocked to celebrate the water-splashing festival at many popular venues across the country.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday presided over the opening of celebrations in her hometown, Chiang Mai. Speaking in northern dialect on her weekly TV show, she wished all Thais happiness, a fresh start free of trouble and a safe journey during the traditional New Year.

Despite the car bomb that rocked Hat Yai late last month, hotel and tourism entrepreneurs in the city have fared better than expected, as all 25,000 rooms in the city were reserved. Malaysian tourists are the biggest group of foreigners travelling there to celebrate the festival, according to Somchart Pimthanapoonporn, chairman of the Hat Yai-Songkhla Hoteliers Association.

Previously, after the explosion in Hat Yai, Somchart said businesses had expected only 50 per cent of the rooms to be reserved since a lot of tourists from Singapore and Malaysia had cancelled reservations.

He estimated that the district would be able to generate revenue of around Bt50 million from Wednesday till Friday.

Despite the blazing heat, Khao San Road was crowded with Thai and foreign revellers for the second day of New Year celebrations yesterday. They were entertained by a foam party and music performance.

Supachai Limwuttiwong, a Thai man who joined the Khao San celebrations, said the hot weather did not affect him that much, though he wanted police to strictly implement safety measures as he was worried about pickpockets and women being molested.

With a huge flock of revellers on Silom Road, police from Bang Rak, Yannawa and Thung Mahamek stations combined forces to ensure safety. Selling alcohol and carrying weapons were prohibited, but reports emerged of vendors selling alcohol. To prevent improper or lewd dancing, police prohibited vehicles equipped with amplifiers from entering the road.

People in Kanchanaburi celebrated Songkran in Mon style, by offering alms to 100 monks on Uttamanusorn Bridge, the longest wooden bridge in Thailand.

On Angthong's Khao Suk Road, police yesterday implemented strict measures to prevent crime, molestation and indecency after some youngsters were seen engaging in obscene acts on Friday.

Local residents in Phitsanulok made merit for their ancestors.

On "Khao Niew Road" in Khon Kaen, 51,814 people performed a "human wave" at 7pm on Friday, breaking the Guinness World Record of 50,208 people, set last year.

How's tourism in Thailand been so far this year? With the continued decline in the global economy and over-priced plane tickets it wouldn't be surprising if tourism has been down since the start of the year. However, I can still imagine folks using the GBP, EUR and KWD are still traveling to Thailand because they are still earning a pretty strong exchange rate on their currency.

Thailand’s growth rate dips

BANGKOK, 22 March 2012: Ministry of Tourism and Sports Wednesday released its travel statistics showing trips to Thailand improved by a marginal 2% in February compared to the same month last year.

The slow growth pulled the accumulated performance down to 4.83% from 7.65% in January.

In February, there were 1,838,595 international trips recorded through all airport and border checkpoints.

Most of the supply regions recorded improvements, but East Asia, including ASEAN were down by 2.42% on 898,268 trips and the Middle East down 3.68% on 44,152.

The ministry said declines from China (-2.82%, 178,006), Hong Kong (-33.92%, 25,858) and Taiwan (-28.19%, 29,508) were due to travel warnings during Chinese New Year in January, that had a spillover effect on February’s performance.

A more credible reason is that in 2011 Chinese New Year, a bumper week for travel, was celebrated in early February.

In January, the US Embassy in Bangkok issued a travel alert on Bangkok and that prompted similar alerts from 20 other nations.

Besides China, two other large suppliers recorded declines in February. They were Malaysia, the top contributor (-14.02%, 187,223) and Russia, the fourth largest (-4.71%, 118,436).

Arrivals from the Americas and Oceania grew, 14.62% (97,201) and 15.8% (71,675) respectively. European markets for the beginning of the year were also positive showing increases, except Russia, resulting in a growth of 5.22% (629,360).

Considering the two-month period, moderate increases were recorded except for South Asia (-1.04%) and the Middle East (-5.81%). East Asia’s arrivals were up 3% (1,790,179); Europe, +6.71% (1,336,254); the Americas, +12.23 (208,195); Oceania, +16.07% (163,953) and Africa, +1.48% (20,465).

In February, Suvanabhumi Airport welcomed 1,186,837 tourists (+3.54%) followed Phuket Airport, 230,397 (-0.77%); Sadao Checkpoint on the Thai-Malaysian border in Songkhla province, 103,474 (-17.1%); the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge checkpoint in Nong Khai province, 78,783 (+26.77%) and Aranyaprathet checkpoint on the Thai-Cambodian border in Srakaew province, 41,894 (-7.06%).

As for Thai outbound travel, the Immigration Bureau tallied 533,297 in February, representing an increase of 3.74%. Of which, 225,442 travelled through Suvanabhumi Airport followed by Aranyaprathet checkpoint, 111,801; Sadao checkpoint, 38,502; the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge checkpoint, 29,029 and Sungai Kolok on Thai-Malaysian border in Narathiwat, 23,736.

The data was collected by the Immigration Bureau from all checkpoints –air, land and sea and is preliminary data subject to review.
