There was nothing weak about the developer, Bazis. They had the misfortune of pairing with one of those big US investment banks that went belly up during the financial crisis down there. With their financier gone, they had to abandon the project. Bazis is still very much in business with a number of projects in Toronto.

If they were so strong financially, they should have been able to go it alone, or at least hang in there long enough to interest some other financial institution to take the place of Lehman Brothers (which failed).... but they could not... Instead, they had to sell the land (arguably the most prime piece of property in Canada) to raise money so that they could meet there debt obligations elsewhere.... this meets my concept of "weak hands" if not yours.

It's not as simple as that. All new financing dried up during the financial crisis. No one was lending out money. They had to walk away.

But the developers that had financing from Lehman Brothers on other projects where able to hanging in there (after going through a delay) and eventually go into construction.... MaRS Phase II is one such development for example. Bazis was unable to do that.... and then of course over 100 other projects continued on their merry way, despite the credit issues at the time. I mean most didn't have to walk away.

Those 100 other projects were not financed by Lehman Brothers. As isaidso said, new financing dried up. Those other projects with secured funding from other sources were not affected and thus carried on their merry way as you put it. In the end, it was a blessing since we are getting a better product than was originally planned, and Bazis, no matter how naff they might be, are still in business.

The skylines in the background are nice, but the roads kinda spoil the foreground and lakefront to me. But a really nice photo all the same.

Does Toronto have any suburbs that are entirely (or mostly) mid- to high-rise apartments? I'm curious to know if apartment life is quite common there in certain areas. Also, are apartments quite expensive there? And are most of them situated near metro stations?

Toronto is the capital of the province of Ontario, and in the lower centre of the photo can be seen the Legislative Assembly of Ontario... the University of Toronto is to the right of it.

Yes, the wide road is University Avenue... one of my favorite parts of Toronto.

I agree with you. The Gardiner Expressway was built in the 1960s and cut Torontonians off from their water front. That giant park with the pond is called High Park and used to stretch right to the water's edge, terminating at Sunnyside Pavillion. It was a huge magnet for Torontonians in the summer time attracting tens of thousands of people. It had a Coney Island atmosphere to it. After the Gardiner was built, Sunnyside fell into immediate and steep decline from which it has never recovered.

Toronto is only now improving north-south links to the water to mitigate the effects of the highway. The Gardiner should have been a tunnel, but we're likely stuck with it now. On the bright side, it's a great drive into the city and the waterfront has remained green. There's a bike path, beaches, and boating. All are heavily used when the weather permits.

One of my favourite's too. University Avenue is Toronto's ceremonial avenue and definitely our grandest. Here's a close up of that street.
