I'm living in Berkeley right now, and I just love how everyone who has lived in the Bay Area for a long time complains incessantly about their transit systems, especially the Muni, when it's arguably the best transit system west of the Mississippi.

Unfortunately, and I hate to say it, but that's not really impressive. The bay area is still behind Philadelphia, Boston, NYC, and DC.

And the fact that we're so far behind the Bay Area just makes it even sadder.

Well, in NYC everybody complains about the subway, even though it's clearly the most complete transit system in the US.

That said, it still deserves to be complained about.

Only two very common complaints that I heard most about NYC subways: Not accessible for both senior citizens and people with physical challenges and very dirty that need to clean up often.

And people complain alllll the time about its reliability, especially since every weekend there are huge closures.

I just took the Paris Metro this past week. I don't know why I was expecting new and modern, but it wasn't. And good lord was it crowded around 7 PM. I mean, Tokyo cramming in crowded. But what an easy city to get around in.

New York and London are the same way.

Still quite convenient, but some quite old/well worn bits and Holy Crowded

NYC subway fails because there is little to no crosstown subway routes, reliability issues, and the ridiculous spacing of subway stations. The local trains are seriously nothing more than a grade separated bus. The job of the Metro system is to get you to the general area of your destination faster. Getting to that exact street/corner is the job of your feet, buses, or bike.

I much prefer newer systems like Seattle and LA. I like subways where the stations are farther apart, but each station is more unique and are built to higher quality. The Capitol Hill(Like the Beacon Hill Station) station will feel more like a community station than just some random ass station. It also means trains can run faster and more reliably.

They are expensive to build, but in the long run when the systems are built out, these will make for in-general much better systems than NYC. London I can't comment.

Looks like tunneling from Capitol Hill to Downtown may be complete (or near). Noticed on the camera today that they have removed the spoils conveyor system from the final tunnel portal.

They're getting there!

Here's the official word.

Of note in the article they discuss that the project is not behind, but too early to say that it's ahead. Also, they plan to develop above the tunnel next to the Paramount.

Latest 60% Design for the U-District Station (previously the Brooklyn Station). Just loving the artwork. A wall created to simulate a neighborhood skyline:

Looks very good. Thanks for posting. Stating the obvious but we sure have taken an expensive, custom station design approach on our Link stations compared with other systems that are basically the same between stations. I like the approach if it means there's a higher level of design/construction quality than say the Beacon Hill station but talk about reinventing much of the "wheel" each time around. I'm a little surprised to see the cool skewed structural beams spanning the station box. Totally different design than even the UW Stadium station which has its own special structural beam detail (rotated squares or diamonds instead of standard beams = $$).
I realize we're building a 100+ year system (or hope we are) so I don't want to penny pinch but some of these design decisions are a little much. (Yes - I'm a big fan of DC's Metrorail and BART - it's been great to see how those systems started with great design and varied it as needed over decades of growth but still have a recognizable standard from what I've seen.)

Why are they able to integrate the exhaust fans into the station box here, but at Roosevelt, they end up sticking up like monoliths (Not sarcastic grumbling, I assume there actually is a good reason?). The integration into TOD for this site is awesome. Wish they could do the same up north as well.

I'm thinking there will be more standardized stations as we venture outwards from the core. Chicago is similar. Nice stations underground in the Loop. More basic plan outdoor platforms in the 'burbs. I'm thinking the same for Northgate north and Bellevue east.

Early work is starting on the pedestrian bridge over Montlake at the now named UW Station. Nice pic here:
