Sunderland City Council is planning to
rejuvenate Market Square

Sunderland City Council Website

Sunderland City Council is developing Market Square it into a stimulating space, located at the heart of the city centre. Market Square is important to the city and £1million funding has been secured for its transformation. The result will be a vibrant and welcoming public space that Sunderland people can be proud of.

1 - High quality paving will emphasise the importance of Market Square to the city centre and join it to other improvements in the city centre.

Proposed DAY TIME View

2 - A new pattern of paving with feature lighting, power sockets and fixing points for moveable seats will create a flexible space that can be adapted for a number of uses.

Proposed NIGHT-TIME View

All existing seats, litter-bins, dead or dying trees and other street clutter will be removed, to open up the space and make it more flexible.

For further information please contact the Planning Implementation team on 0191 561 1714 or 0191 561 8758 or alternatively email implementation@sunderland.gov.uk.

The Council's Road Network Management Section carried out a Traffic Impact Assessment on Fawcett Street and the Fawcett Street/Burdon Road/Borough Road junction in the Winter of 2011. The assessment was completed in January 2012 and was undertaken as part of the overall feasibility study for proposed street scene and traffic improvements. The internal fee charged by Council's Road Network Management Section for this work was £18,130.
· The Council's Landscape, Reclamation & Countryside Section also carried out a design study to support the proposed street scene and traffic improvements. The internal fee charged by the Landscape, Reclamation & Countryside Section for this work was £10,000. This fee was paid in March 2012.

Superdry is a good brand to have in Sunderland atleast. So atleast decent stores are replacing the ones that have closed.
