Source? I would like to see this happen ..

Flight between Siem Reap to Jakarta is more appropriate, since very few Indonesians travel to Phnom Penh

Flights from Manila ready for take-off

The Philippines’ Cebu-Pacific Airlines will launch direct flights to Siem Reap from Manila on April 19, according to a Cambodian civil aviation official.

Soy Sokhan, under-secretary of state of the Kingdom’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, said the two ASEAN nations had signed a bilateral agreement on April 10 to commence flights between the cities after months of negotiations and market research.

“They will land at Siem Reap International Airport on the 19th with an Airbus 320 at 9:30pm,” he said, adding the planes carried about 150 passengers each.

The Philippine airline sought to take advantage of Siem Reap’s status as a big tourist destination, Soy Sokhan said.

Flights will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and flights between Phnom Penh and Jakarta are expected soon.

Tourism Minister Thong Khon pointed to the new connection as a sign of the region’s continued moves towards economic integration in 2015.

“It shows an improvement in connectivity. The tourism industry cannot grow without connectivity,” he said.

Flights from Madrid land in Siem Reap

By Rann Reuy
Monday, 23 April 2012
Phnom Penh Post

Planes carrying more than 1,000 Spanish tourists landed in Siem Reap on Saturday, in what tourism officials called a positive signal from Europe during a time of economic instability.

The tour that brought 1,290 tourist in on four chartered planes saw some of the first direct tourism-oriented flights from Madrid, Spain. It also brought some of the largest planes – three Airbus 330s and one Boing 767 – ever to land in Siem Reap.

“It’s the first time big planes land here. I hope it will attract more European tourists,” said Kong Sangvar, managing director of Orchestra Travel & Tours, an agency that helped organise the trip.

Although there are no plans for direct flights, the chartered flights have put tourism potential from Spain on some officials’ radars.

“Permanent flights needs long-term research because it is based on passengers from Spain,” Tith Vanna, Siem Reap International Airport director, said.

Ang Kim Eang, president of the Cambodian Association of Travel Agents, said the trip signifies that Europe was not a dead market for Cambodian tourism.

Competition is good, but the airline need to be strong, it is very bad when budget airline goes bust and people stuck in other country without support.

Cambodian PM calls for direct flight with Japan

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen insisted Monday that a regularly direct flight between Cambodia and Japan is very important to boost the bilateral ties in economic, trade, investment and tourism.

He said Japan is one of the largest aid providers to Cambodia, but, on the investment side, few Japanese investors have come to Cambodia.

On the tourism side, during the first three months of this year, Cambodia received 54,450 Japanese visitors, a 10.6 percent increase, ranking Japan at No. 4 among the top ten market arrivals.

"Cambodia wants to see more Japanese investors and tourists to Cambodia in order to build stronger ties between Cambodia and Japan in all fields," Hun Sen said during a meeting with Japanese investor Huyashi Susumu, the president of Grand Operation Company.

He said if there is a direct flight between the two countries, he believes that more Japanese tourists will come to Cambodia, so do Japanese investors.

Hun Sen recalled that during his visit to Japan last month to attend the 4th Mekong-Japan Summit, he also suggested Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to consider a direct flight between the two countries.

Japan is the second largest provider of grants and concessional loans to Cambodia after China. According to the Cambodian government's records, by 2011, Japan had given some $2 billion to Cambodia.

But, in terms of investment, since 1994 to 2011, Cambodia had attracted only $257 million from Japan, ranking the country as the 11th largest investor in Cambodia.

Stung Treng looks to revamp jungle airport .

Rann Reuy

Officials in the northeastern province of Stung Treng hope future travellers will trade their bus seats for plane tickets.

No fuctional airport exists in the province, but local officials are demarcating, and looking to revamp, a landing strip that was installed when Cambodia was a protectorate of France.

Stung Treng governor Loy Sophat said local authorities had finished measuring the size of the airport late last year.

The majority of the 560-hectare airport was covered in forest and farmland after more than half a century of disuse, he said.

“If it is developed, this airport will mostly serve the tourism sector, because goods have other means of transportion such as roads and railways,” Loy Sophat said.

He did acknowledge that the scale of the airport might not pique investor interest.

“We think a small-size airport will not attract investors because we see other countries have airports with other facilities such as golf courses.

We have to think in the long term. Our land is so huge. If we don’t plan, some day we won’t be able to use it.”

Soy Sokhan, under-secretary of state for Civil Aviation, said officials were registering airport properties in other provinces where they used to exist.

Demarcation of the Stung Treng airport had not been completed, and the effect on villagers in the area was still unknown, Soy Sokhan said.

Keo Mom, a 50-year-old resident of Sre Por village, which is located on the airport site, said villagers were asking local governments and NGOs to help them gain compensation for the land they could lose.

A functional airport will improve land value by a lot. The population density isn't so great in Stung Treng﹐ it should not be too much problem to assign some area for the said village.

However, the airport has a very short runway, can it be extend?
