This is what the A5 looks like from the A10 Amsterdam Ringroad (GMaps)

I figured out something like that: thanks for the video

I was wondering: is the A10 between Coenplein and Sloterdijk at risk of congestion? Also I see from GMaps that the Coenplein Interchange may be rebuilt with right of way assigned to A8.

EDIT: I gave a look to OSM and I got all the answers. There is the complete project for the A5, the doubled Coentunnel and the modified interchange.

Sorry for the noob questions, I've been "approaching" the Amsterdam area only in the last year and I'm still at a rookie knowledge level...
After many years of SSC reading I went "on site" and discovered a sort of fascination for the Dutch way of land planning and rail&road design, so that's why I'm around here

The Coentunnel was the fourth most congested stretch of road in the country in 2011 and the second most in 2010.

OSM can be a really good guide for new projects, glad to see other people using it for exactly that reason too.

I once made this diagram of the final situation of the Coenplein interchange. It's rather complex!

Black = freeway lanes
Red = reversible rush hour lanes
Green = exits and urban roads
Blue = water.

It is part of the construction of the A5 (bypassing the Western part of Amsterdam), increasing tunnel capacity, and increasing A8 capacity:

A4 Delft - Schiedam

Minister Schultz of Infrastructure and Environment officially started construction on the A4 between Delft and Schiedam today. The new 7 kilometer, € 650 million motorway will relieve A13 and improve accessiblity and travel times in the Rotterdam area. Although preparatory works already commenced a year ago, full-scale construction will commence very soon. The new motorway will feature a 2 kilometer long land tunnel near Schiedam. The rest will be depressed below grade. A forecasted 128.000 vehicles will use the A4 on a daily basis. The new motorway features 3 northbound and 2 southbound lanes, with space for an additional lane.

Why initial section will be 2+3 lanes? Don't justify an AADT of 128.000 a 2x3 section?

It's a political issue. 2x3 is seen as "too massive" for a new motorway. The Netherlands hasn't constructed a new alignment with 2x3 lanes for decades, the last time this happened was mainly in the second half of the 1960's, when A9 and A10 were constructed with 2x3 lanes from the beginning. All others were widened in later years, some extensively.

I believe this corridor should have a space reservation for 2x4 lanes, but it depends on the future of the nearby A13 motorway. There are some vague ideas to widen A13 to 2x5 lanes to handle the forecasted 300.000 vehicles per day on the A4/A13 corridor by 2030.

Last time a complete new 2x3 was opened was in 1990: A10 north and east.

Oh right, A15 Noord Tunnel was built with 2x3 lanes as well. Though that was more like a widening rather than a completely new alignment. A15 and A20 were also constructed with 2x3 lanes in the mid-1970's. I can't think of any more recent new 2x3 alignments offhand, unless you count A27 near Utrecht as such.

By the way, the 130 km/h speed limit cannot be declared controversial and will be implemented September 1st as planned, 11 days before the elections. For once, this is not an election stunt, as the introduction date has been known for months.

Aqueducts of Friesland

Friesland is the Dutch province with the greatest concentration of aqueducts (aquaduct in Dutch, akwadukt in Frisian). These are structures that carry a waterway across a road, and they usually appear like a short tunnel.

I made a video of 7 aqueducts yesterday. There are currently 8 in Friesland, I forgot one. Another 4 aqueducts will be constructed in the next 5 years.

Great video, nice editing. If I'm correct, two of the 4 new aqueducts are currently under construction in the Leeuwarden area as a part of the 'Haak om Leeuwarden' project?

Yes. There will be 3 new aqueducts under the Van Harinxma Canal; 2 of them are part of the Leeuwarden Bypass project. Another one will be constructed in Harlingen. A fourth aqueduct will be under construction soon near Burgum, part of the "Centrale As" project (N356).

Strangely, the neighboring Groningen province, being similar flat with many waterways, does not have a single aqueduct.

N50 Ramspol Bridge

An aerial photo of the new N50 Ramspol Bridge under construction. The new bridge spans the Ramsdiep strait, and has a total length of 540 meters. It replaces the structurally obsolete old Ramspol Bridge from 1948 (on the right). The new bridge will feature 2x2 lanes and a local road for slow traffic. The new bridge will open in early 2013.

Great video. The 8-th Galamadammen akwadukt is in my video:

This is really amazing planning. It is very useful I think. I'm not an expert but I think this does not (or very rarely) exist in Germany.

Today, I have taken some pictures of the A16 and Van Brienenoordbrug, from the small island below the highway (eastern part of Rotterdam). It´s called `Eiland van Brienenoord´ and is partly accessible by car. I went here by bicycle and then by foot to the eastern part.

You can get under the bridge on the other side too, I regularly used to chill under the bridge with a couple of cars.
https://maps.google.com/?ll=51.90631...44.68,,0,-0.41

We used to stay here for a bit and chill and stuff, nobody near at night and no inhabitants who can complain:
https://maps.google.com/?ll=51.90664...246.07,,0,4.44.

Perfect place to hold a mini-meeting, music loud, couple of beers for the rest, a football, what do you want more . Cops drove by regularly and didn't care.

shame we have so few elevated bits of highway, perfect place to chill a bit at night with nobody near who can complain ( since people usually don't live near it).

With the motorway speed limit at the very reasonable 130 level, it can be declared that the planned section control at the A2 Amsterdam-Utrecht will undoubtedly raise much funds for new massive projects, especially as the Dutch will get used to drive faster.

Any chance for 80->90 and 100->110 where applied, as well as for 100->110 at 2 + 2 autoweg?
