How is that the 2.30 pm mangalore-hyderabad service reaches hubli at 10.10pm & the 3 pm mangalore-mumbai service reach hubli at 9.50pm even the both leave at a gap of half and hour and both follow the same route. I guess the timings are unrealistic. Altough what time they reach hubli hardly matters...

Quote:
May 04, 2012

Mangalore: Four KSRTC Buses Promised for City, None on Road Yet

Mangalore, May 9: Fed up of 'low-grade' service provided by private bus companies in the city, citizens were keenly looking forward to the introduction of four KSRTC buses that was announced in early April during the RTA adalat.

The new bus service was supposed to begin operations by April end on Baikampady-Kankanady route and elsewhere, but the deadline has come and gone, and yet there is no sign of a single KSRTC bus in the city limits.

One wonders if the responsibility of officials ends at only announcement of proposals and not in realizing them.

At the RTA adalat held on April 5, RTO C Mallikarjuna on the sidelines of the meeting had told mediapersons that four KSRTC buses would start plying on Baikampady-Kankanady and other routes by April end and the permit for the same had been granted.

It is a common belief that the KSRTC buses with their low footboards and spacious double doors are a blessing for the physically challenged and the aged commuters, enabling them to board the bus with ease. They also eliminate the problem of crowding. Moreover, the KSRTC is known for its customer-friendly approach. In the last RTA adalat complaints mainly were on the rude behaviour of conductors in private buses.

When asked the reason for the absence of KSRTC buses in the city, RTO C Mallikarjuna told Daijiworld that KSRTC has been demanding permission to enter Mangalore’s main bus terminus at State Bank, but the district magistrate's notification (which says there are already too many buses at State Bank and no new ones will be allowed) requires modification first before the RTA can permit KSRTC buses to run to and fro the main bus terminus. An offer was then made to KSRTC to run on routes like Kankanady, Ladyhill, KPT and Mallikatta, which was rejected on the grounds that it was not profitable enough.

KSRTC divisional controller Ramesh said that permission was sought to run at least near the commissioner’s office, which would have brought in some profit. "Otherwise, KSRTC buses will not make any profit," he said.

Meanwhile, the passengers continue to wait for better buses and relief from private operators.

Private buses have come a long way
The Hindu

360 such buses ply on at least 148 routes in Mangalore city
Quote:
Nobody can miss Mangalore's city buses. With the names of owners emblazoned across the windshields and painted in a riot of colours, they transport people between various points of the city.

They have been part of the city for a long time. Buses used to run as far back as 1942 in Mangalore. While buses began plying on coastal routes in 1944, in Mangalore, Ullal was connected to the rest of the city by bus in 1965-66 as a bridge was built. Till then, people travelled to Ullal through a launch service from Bunder, said A.K. Jayarama Sheka, president of the 243-member Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners' Association (DKBOA).

He said that there are 360 private buses in Mangalore with many owners replacing buses in 5-6 years.

According to the RTO, buses in Mangalore ply on at least 148 routes. Buses on various routes make different numbers of round trips per day. Some buses make three round trips (such as Route No.2G, which connects Bajpe to Surathkal) while some buses make 25 round trips (such as State Bank to Mangaladevi). The total number of trips made per day also varies: while some routes have three (such as Bajpe to Surathkal), some routes have 153 (such as State Bank to Thalapady). Other routes with frequency above 50 trips a day are State Bank to Morgans Gate (152), State Bank to Bondel (108), State Bank to Kodical via Car Street, and via Lalbagh (56), State Bank to Kottara (57), State Bank to Kunjathbail (50), Mangaladevi to Katipalla (66 State Bank to Mangaladevi (50), State Bank to Mulihithlu (75), State Bank to Shediguri via Mannaguda (51), State Bank to Shediguri va Lalbagh (51), State Bank to Akashbhavan (70), State Bank to Kotepura (55), and State Bank to Mangalpete (72).

Bus owners' turnover may go up to Rs. 9,000 a day per bus depending on the route and time. However, one challenge they face now is that people travel by their own vehicles and students use two-wheelers, Mr. Sheka said.

However, the number of permits sought by bus owners to operate on more routes is increasing. C. Mallikarjuna, Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Mangalore, told The Hindu that 450 applications are pending. Clearance of applications depends on various factors, including what the applicant is asking for. Permits are sought on routes towards Konaje and Suratkal. But they can come only till Pumpwell and Mallikatte. Vehicles from Kottara Chowki must stop at Lady Hill. Some owners ask for permits to ply buses in the city, which is not allowed. This is because following the issue of two District Magisterial notifications, permits cannot be given to routes in certain areas within the city. They include Lady Hill, Mallikatte, Kankanady, Mangaladevi and KPT.

Issue of permits is being discouraged to avoid further congestion in the city. Infrastructure has to improve if more permits have to be given. “There is a vehicular explosion in Mangalore city,” he said.

One feature of Mangalore's buses is that while its city buses are entirely in private hands, students and physically challenged persons get a bus pass with up to 60 per cent of the cost subsidised. There are 18,000 student passes, said Mr. Sheka. On Monday, the office of the D.K.B.O.A was deserted but once schools re-open in the first week of June, the rush for passes will begin.

Revathi, a Mangalore resident, said that one of her friends, a student who travels to Valachil, has not taken the bus pass because conductors derided her publicly once as “half ticket”, which made her feel insulted.

Mr Sheka said that complaints do come and they are addressed. “We keep a watch and speak to drivers who do not stop for students. We organise training for two days to train drivers and conductors on how to speak politely to passengers, RTO officials and police,” he said.

‘KSRTC city service will affect us'
The Hindu

Quote:
Private bus operators here are apprehensive that if the government introduces more buses their services will be hit.

Jayarama Sheka, president, Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators' Association, said that when the government allowed private operators to ply contract carriages in 2003, there were 130 such carriages in the district. Now the number of such carriages had come down to 40.

He said unable to withstand the competition from the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) on Mangalore-Dharmasthala, Mangalore-Puttur, Mangalore-Kukke Subrahmanya and Mangalore-Sullia-Madikeri routes, private operators had to withdraw their contract carriages.

Mr. Sheka said now there was no private contract carriage service from Mangalore to Subrahmanya. On the other, KSRTC, which initially introduced its services on competitive basis on the particular route with contract carriage buses, had reduced its services now. “As a result, private jeep services are back on Uppinangady-Kadaba-Subrahmanya route,'' he added. Services of city buses and contract carriages come under the Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators' Association. While the service of express buses and service (shuttle) buses come under the jurisdiction of the Canara Bus Operators' Association.

Referring to the government allowing contract carriage private buses, Mr. Sheka said it was in return for the government taking away (nationalising) private buses in the State in 1976. When D. Devaraj Urs was Chief Minister, the government on January 30, 1976, acquired 960 private buses. The government, however, could not provide connectivity to all places owing to many issues in its transport corporations. When S.M. Krishna was Chief Minister, he allowed private operators to ply buses for connecting more places through better services, he said. Bhaskar Salian, general secretary, Canara Bus Operators' Association, said the KSRTC had introduced six Volvo buses between Manipal and Mangalore. Though private operators suffered from this initially “we have recovered now”, he added.

He said that if Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was extended to Mangalore, the government would have the chance of introducing more modern buses in the district. If that happened, it would affect private operators, he added.

Buses are painted to attract passengers
The Hindu

Quote:
While buses in many cities are in uniform colours, in Mangalore, they are painted in a riot of colours, said G.G.Giridhar Prabhu, former president of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). Other than solid colours, there are splashes of colours, stripes, various flora, fauna and undersea scenes (such as tiger fish and corals) on buses. Some buses going to Pilikula have pictures of a roaring tiger. The aim is to get the attention of passengers.

K Jayarama Sheka, president, Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners' Association (DKBOA), said, “In Mangalore, competition (for painting buses) is there, not for money, (but it is) a craze is there.” Painting on the buses attracts people. Bus owners get their buses painted in attractive designs in Chennai and Coimbatore but repairs are done in Mangalore. He said the competition to get colourful buses was much like racing in ‘Kambla'. Dilraj Alva, owner of buses that ply on Route 27, said there is an undeclared competition among owners to get attractive buses. This has been so after the city got concrete roads. On Monday, he was launching a bus for Route 27 with the “go green” message. He saw the design and the message on the Net and got it done in a garage in Mulihithlu.
