It makes marketing difficult and makes creating a brand a bit harder in the USA when a large minority of people think "Florida" when they hear "Panama City"
Panama City Fl probably feels the same way...but cities don't have any particular rights to a name, so you'll have to continue to parse through the other one's inconvenient "garbage" when you search online.

Panama City, Florida is beautiful, by the way...and is a very popular vacation destination in the U.S. - hence the large number of results in an online search.

Panama City, Florida picked the name to commemorate Panama City, Panama's completion of the canal so, no, they shouldn't feel the same way because they had another choice. And I never said cities have particular rights to a name. In fact, I said Panama City, Panama should pay Panama City, Florida to change it's name, both acknowledging and legitimizing the fact that the Panama City, Florida has a right to the name and needs to be given an incentive. And I currently live in Oklahoma so I'm very familiar with the U.S. and I agree that it's a popular destination but mostly for bikers, rednecks, frat boys, and drunk blondes. The beaches are nice but this city has nothing on the true vacation destinations in the US. It's a glorified Spring Break tourist trap, and nothing more. Destin is much, much, much better.

In CT, these are the most obvious:

Bristol
Berlin
Manchester
New London (even has it's own Thames river)

Actually for Hartford, it's the opposite. Including all the Hartfords scattered throughout the country which are all much smaller than the one here, there is also two Hartfords in Britain which are both small and not really noticeable.

Los Angeles, TX and San Diego, TX are located closer to each other than Los Angeles, CA and San Diego, CA are.

Detroit, OR wanted to change its name recently to "Detroit Lake" to get away from the taint of Detroit, MI. Locally, East Detroit, MI changed its name some years ago to "Eastpointe".

That is such an ignorant post...you have no idea who vacations in Panama City FL. Don't try to act as if you do.

I'm pretty sure no one in Panama City Panama is worried about the name of a small city in Florida. You seem to be the only one pissed off about it. It's silly to act like that. There are cities and towns all over the world that are named in honor of a larger/more well-known city...it's not a new phenomenon or one created by Panama City FL.

Yea, remember the rebranding to EastPointe.

Kinda surprised that the OR town didn't changeover to Des Lakes!

US developers & realtors have been masters of place re-branding for over a century.

Interesting, because there is also a Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Also: Montevideo, MN (Of course it's Americanized and pronounced "Monta-VIDEO")

I also found this amusing tidbit about Duluth, Georgia on Wikipedia: "The town was renamed Duluth in 1871 after Congress approved funding for a north-south railroad connecting it with the better known Duluth, Minnesota, which is in turn named for Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut. Evan Howell was on hand for the renaming ceremony. Duluth's founding fathers apparently chose the name after a satirical speech, "The Untold Delights of Duluth," given by Congressman J. Proctor Knott of Kentucky during the debate over the railroad bill."

Green Bay isn't a big city; but, a little city with a big name. When I was in New Zealand I was surprised to see an Auckland suburb named Green Bay. Also, if you type in Green Bay on the weather.com website a Green Bay, Virginia pops up.

It would seem the small towns of New York State weren't satisfied with just big city names. We went for every empire name/ancient city-state, or long dead civilization that was ever under the sun......Babylon, Bohemia, Mecca, Medina, Phoenicia, Syracuse, Utica, Minoa..the list goes much further on...and of course Rome and Athens, too.

Ironically enough, NYS's nickname of "Empire State" has no relation to any of that.

Yeah, what did you think that I meant? The names are international because of the namesake larger world cities....

Hopefully that doesn't need further explanation. It's not hard to understand.

I call it ignorant for someone to get so bent out of shape over a small vacation city that people outside of the South probably don't even know about.

If you want to call it redneck then be my guest, but it's a gorgeous beach with huge expensive homes and the people that vacation there are no more redneck than anywhere else. Mate.

Many places are called derogatory names, but that doesn't mean the names are accurate. Just a logical thought.
