When they pore the core, steel plates are set in position for each level and concreted over, leaving just the plate on the external face of the core. The plates have rebar on the back of them which locks them into the concrete.

Connecting brackets are then welded onto these plates for the i beams to be bolted to.

Lumberjack has a picture of the plates they use on a back of a truck. If he see's this I'm sure he'll post a picture then you'll be able to understand a little better .

I even think it will look good when viewed from the front and the rear.

But viewed from the side, you'll see, it's going to look terrible. It's just too stumpy and stooping.
That's what's going to make this building bad, the side views.

you're completely right....This building looks like the bad one of the city, at the contrary of all great projects: leadeanhall, pinaccle, heron, and the already famous gherkin and the newest Shard in southwark.... i hope i'm wrong, but i think this building is ruining the great city shape.... i dont understand how it is possible London heritage could have authorised this, overall at this height, i think the same building would be good, so lower, 15 storage at most...

At the same time, the demolition of "One new change" in 2007 was so sad, even if the new building is great, but to me the old one was so typical Londonian style & historical !!!

Sorry for my bad english.....i m just a london lover !!!

Just to elaborate scalatrava`s correct explanation of how the plates work,
The encast plates are surveyed for position on the face of the wall and also into the depth into the wall, The Welded conection plates (Fin) are then cut to suit on site then welded into position, this ensures that when the beam is fixed to the plate, the beam and the perimeter columns are in the corect design posion. Damn right. One of them is potentially a masterpiece, the other is an office block (albeit a tall office block) with a look-at-me profile. (Past look-at-me's include Minster Court, Barclays on Gracechurch, No. 1 Poultry, etc.)

I agree however the steel at the moment on 20 fenchurch is internal floor structure, plus it will be cladded when finished.

But yes 122 is a masterpiece of steel
