This was a really long escalator!

I don't want to bore you with too many pictures of fish so here's a couple from inside the aquarium and we'll keep it at that.........oh yeah, that's a whale shark, the main attraction, there's two of them in there

I pretty much lived on bento meals, instant ramen, fruit and cereal bought from local supermarkets like Maruetsu which in retrospect was a big mistake as I never got to enjoy a good bowl of ramen made at a traditional 'hole in the wall' type of restaurant. Oh well, next time!

Day 14 - Kyoto

Kyoto is a city I'd love to go back to and spend at least a few nights there. I'd only allocated a day to see a few sights but that wasn't nearly enough. It was another perfect day weather-wise and I was surprised at how many tourists there were, though I was disappointed to see a group of fellow Australians rudely push their way to the front of the bus queue I was standing in.
I took the Shinkansen from Osaka and my first stop was Kinkaku-ji or The Golden Temple. The bus took me from Kyoto Station directly to the front of the temple complex. After spending a couple of hours admiring the magnificent, gleeming temple and its surrounds I headed back to Kyoto Station and walked to To-ji, a five storey pagoda temple complex. I then made my way by local train to what I thought was the Gion district in the hope of seeing some Geisha going about their daily lives but I later found out it was in Pontocho! No wonder I didn't see any

I remember seeing To-ji from the Shinkansen on the way to Osaka so I thought I'd just follow the train line until I could see the distinctive pagoda jutting out of the skyline

To-ji

Completely lost after getting out of the train station I tried to make my way towards Gion, only to find Pontocho. At least it was an interesting walk through the narrow streets of Kyoto......

Day 15 - Himeji

Himeji was just a day trip, I'd originally planned to see the city after I'd left Osaka, on my way to Hiroshima so I was going to lug my baggage with me but I decided instead to leave my bags with the hotel and pick them up later that afternoon which the hotel staff were glad to do. Himeji is maybe 50 minutes via Shinkansen from Osaka so not an overly long trip and the two attractions I wanted to visit were the world heritage listed Himeji Castle and Engyo-ji temple on Mt Shosha. It's definitely worth a day visit to see these two amazing places.

yet another shinkansen ride....you can never have too many of them

Main street of Himeji - rows of mid-rise buildings....now where have I seen that before, oh that's right ALL OVER Japan. I love it though
