Oh god I can, they make Greggs seem like a health food store and, as the expression goes 'no one ever went bust underestimating... etc'. They are phenomenally successful.

They only have a handful of 'hotlight' factory stores in the UK where their doughnuts are made fresh 24 hours a day and delivered to their kiosks and tesco cabinets in the regions - so without a shadow of a doubt this store will be here to stay!

They may from time to time remove a cabinet from a tesco or close a kiosk which is not performing well, but never will they close down the actual factory store which is the backbone of their operation in the region

I used to be a big fan, but recently I have been getting my hands on so many on my travels to London & Manchester that I now only have the odd one here and there - but still a big fan of them

Lots of WHSmith stores keep a cabinet too, so there's a presence at train stations, service stations etc within a certain distance of Hotlight stores.

Would imagine we'll see a concession in Fenwick!

.
As this is a significant project, it seems sensible that it should have its own Project Thread.

Please post all information relating to the MetroOasis project, on this thread from now on rather than on the main 'RETAIL' thread.

Thanks.

Big surprise not, Krispy Kreme now confirmed.

Quote:
Capital Shopping Centres signs Krispy Kreme for final unit at MetrOasis

20 April 2012

Krispy Kreme has been announced as the final tenant for MetrOasis -the 15,000 sq ft catering development which is currently being built at Capital Shopping Centre’s (CSC) Metrocentre in Gateshead.

The doughnut specialist will take the final unit within the catering led development, which will sit between Metrocentre and the adjacent Metro Retail Park providing a direct link between the two.

Krispy Kreme will open a 4,000 sq ft drive thru Hotlight store at MetrOasis. The format, one of which is in every region, offers the ultimate Krispy Kreme experience with customers able to see the doughnut making process taking place from start to finish.

Krispy Kreme joins Starbucks who will open a standalone 1,800 sq ft drive thru unit and Mitchells & Butlers who are opening two restaurants on the new development. These include a 5,100 sq ft Harvester restaurant – their first new build Harvester in the North East -and a 4,050 sq ft Toby Carvery.
Continues here. http://www.capital-shopping-centres....ews/?id=117235

MetroOasis Krispy Kreme brings 80 jobs to Tyneside
by Andrew Glover, Evening Chronicle, April 27th 2012

The Krispy Kreme doughnut production line.

DOUGHNUT FANS are licking their lips after Krispy Kreme announced plans to open its 50th UK store on Tyneside. The firm will create 80 jobs by opening its latest Hotlight store at MetroOasis, at the Metrocentre in Gateshead. Over 100,000 fresh doughnuts will be made each week and the store will also feature Krispy Kreme’s doughnut theatre, which lets customers watch their treats being made.

Details on how to apply for the jobs are expected soon and the employment boost comes after the Chronicle launched Just The Job, a major new campaign to help get Tyneside back to work. Krispy Kreme will open its doors on September 5 in the new MetrOasis catering area that sits between the Metrocentre and the Metro Retail Park.

Judith Denby, chief marketing officer at Krispy Kreme, said “There’s been a long -standing demand for a store in the North East on our Facebook page from our loyal fans in the region, so we’re delighted to announce the opening of our landmark 50th store in Gateshead. The MetrOasis is a great location for the store and we’re looking forward to welcoming shoppers in for doughnuts and coffee in September.”

Doesn't this mean they will now be able to have smaller stores elsewhere around Tyneside and Wearside?

^ What a ghastly set of buildings, totally different to any of the nearby buildings.

I cannot quite decide whether they look like car showrooms, a new leisure centre or a refuse incinerator.

Certainly doesn't look like the sort of place you would want to eat in!

It's surrounded by retail park big boxes and car showrooms, so I think it blends in quite well.

Take more than a nice building to get me in a Harvester anyway, so I'll stick to the occasional Krispy Kreme. Ideally from one of the many concessions that will appear...Fenwick/Eldon Sq/Central etc, if they stick to their usual model anyway....

Not really, their isn't a nice building around there. The MC itself is a horrible brick box with the newer parts just breeze block shells with plastic cladding strapped over it.

I prefer the Crown Carveries - much cheaper and just as good food. Owned by the same chain too.

I wonder what the difference is supposed to be. Is it just that the Tobys are in smarter locations?

I believe it is something to do with the Toby's being purpose built whereas the Crowns are often failed pubs which have been converted.

Also I believe Toby's receive fresh veg every day whereas Crown's are frozen.
