Modern bus sheds for city soon
Quote:
The city will be dotted with modern bus shelters soon. For the first of its kind in the district, the town planning committee of the city corporation has set up a hi-tech, modern bus shelter at MG Road.

The construction work was tendered by the civic body and the bus shelter has been designed and constructed by Aishwarya Advertising Industries.

The bus shelter with modern, aesthetic, commuter and environment-friendly looks and recreational facilities in front of the Maharajas College ground, was inaugurated by deputy mayor B. Bhadra on Friday.

While inaugurating the shelter, Bhadra urged commuters to upkeep the bus shelter well.

The bus shelter has comfortable seating, is well illuminated, has an FM radio, mobile charger and newspaper stand.

Aishwarya Advertising Industries will set up 11 modern bus shelters in various parts of the city, said managing director K. Vijayakumar.

“This is the fourth shelter that we have constructed. We’ll set up such uniquely designed bus shelters with music, mobile chargers and newspaper stands at the Ravipuram, Edappally and St. Albert’s College bus stops,” he said.

Sponsors will meet the monthly expenses of running the shelter. “Like other metros in the country, the city also needs beautiful, uniquely designed hi-tech bus shelters.

This is just a beginning and we will construct more modern shelters in tune with the changing character of the metro city,” he added.

Minister to open commercial complex on May 4

Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty will inaugurate the commercial complex of the District Industrial Centre at Kakkanad on May 4. The building has been constructed by the Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) at a cost of `2.11 crore.
Benny Behanan MLA, district panchayat president Eldose Kunnappally and District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth will attend the function. Thrikkakkara municipal chairman P I Mohammadali will preside over the function. The efforts for building a complex for the Industrial Centre had begun in the 1990s.
The Revenue Department had allotted 43 cents of land for the purpose. Former Industries Minister K R Gowri had laid the foundation stone for the project at Kunnumpuram-Civil Station Road, Kakkanad.
However the construction work was delayed for years owing to legal hassles. The Industrial Centre had been operating at a rented building at Jose Junction and later at the SIDCO building in Gandhinagar.

Route for drawing water for Maradu plant to be decided tomorrow
Quote:
The project has been facing problems for more than a year

District Collector P.I. Shiekh Pareeth on Saturday visited the two routes suggested by the Kerala Water Authority to draw water from the Piravom river at Pazhoor for the treatment plant at Maradu that will supply water to West Kochi.

The Rs. 200-crore project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for water supply augmentation in the city has been facing problems for more than a year in laying pipeline through the nine-kilometre-stretch out of the total 24 kilometres required to bring raw water to the treatment plant.

Decision on the route would be finalised after discussions with the implementing agency, KWA, and the public works department (PWD) and the representatives of the panchayat through which the pipelines are being laid, Mr. Pareeth told The Hindu.

The pipeline laying can cause trouble as the roads cannot be used for some time. The panchayat representatives, fearing this problem, do not want the pipeline to make its route through their panchayat. Piravom, Arakunnam, Maneed, Edakatuvayil, Vettikkal and Mulanthuruthy are the areas that are expected to be affected by one of the suggested routes.

Land has been acquired for the original route proposed by the KWA at Arakunnam, to build the sump. However, the local people protested against the digging of the road that will cause inconvenience to the public.

The new route suggested through Vettikkal would require more land acquisition and an additional pump to cross over an elevated area. This pumping would have a recurring charge of Rs. 80 lakh a year, said the KWA official.

DMRC to go ahead with metro rail works

DMRC, Jai Ho!
Quote:
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will go ahead with the preliminary works for the Kochi metro rail project since the Japanese loan for the project might take another year, E. Sreedharan, the Principal Advisor to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said here on Monday. The funds allotted under the Central and State budgets would be used for the ongoing construction works, he said. The DMRC had earlier stated that it is ready with the paper works for awarding contracts for the preliminary works like widening roads.

TENDERS FLOATED

It had already tendered the work to widen the Town Hall-Madhava Pharmacy Junction stretch.

The preliminary works like levelling the ground for its coach-maintenance yard at Muttom in Aluva too is set to begin soon, despite the Centre being yet to grant formal clearance for the project.

This is in keeping with the agency's work culture, aimed at executing projects in a time-bound manner.

Later, Mr Sreedharan visited the DMRC office in the city and took stock of the ongoing works of the agency, that include rebuilding the North overbridge and the construction of the Salim Rajan Road overbridge.

“This was a routine visit. He went through details of the tenders, diagrams and the planning being done,” sources in the agency said.

There will not be any Global tender for Kochi Metro by KMRL/ State for implementing Kochi Metro on a turnkey basis. Here DMRC will go for global tender for various works on a piece meal basis. The earlier stand by the State and KMRL was global tender for the whole project on a turnkey basis.

Thats what I feel. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yep. DMRC was awarded the project on a turnkey basis. Now DMRC will call global tenders for each section step by step, like the Civil, Electrical, Rolling Stock, Signalling etc.

Kochi Corporation to straighten dangling wires

The worst thing about Kochi is getting cleared, Hopefully soon!
Quote:
As part of Kochi City Beautification Project, proposed in this year’s budget, the Corporation will have ducts alongside roads to lay underground cables. “At least three metres of the roadsides will be set aside for the sewage canal and another three metres will be used for laying private cables. Hopefully, this will solve the issue of loosely hanging tangled wires on the roadsides,” said Soumini Jain, chairperson, Works Standing Committee, Kochi Corporation. The project will be funded through public-private-partnership (PPP).

The issue of dangling wires along the roadsides have become a major problem in the city. The sight is common even on the main roads like S A Road, M G Road, Janatha Road etc.

Traffic AC Baby Vinod (East) said, “The Corporation continues to grant permission to the cable operators to lay wires wherever they want. Now, the responsibility has fallen on the police to call the Fire and Safety Department workers to come and cut the wires.”

Earlier, an order was passed asking the private operators to set up separate posts to draw their wires. But, now it is found that many of the cable wires found to be hanging loosely in the public places dangle from electric posts. “We will take strict action against such offenders,” Soumini Jain added.
