Now that Garuda has stated it will return to Auckland we could see them back in Brisbane soon as they got a massive $200 billion aircraft order coming with 22 A330s and plan to expand again they could even return to Adelaide.

GA has plans for many things and what it does and doesn't follow through on will be interesting.
Great growth for BNE.

Qld intrastate travel booming
19/04/2012 COURTESY OF BAC Brisbane Airport’s recent passenger figures indicate intrastate travel between Brisbane and regional Queensland is growing at more than double the rate of interstate travel. So significant is the growth that once popular interstate routes are being pushed out of Brisbane’s top 20 city pairs. Launceston and Hobart have dropped out of the top 20 to make way for Moranbah and Roma, with Gladstone and Emerald also moving up the rankings. The fastest growing intrastate routes in passenger volume terms for Brisbane Airport include Gladstone, Mackay, Moranbah, Cairns, Emerald, Roma, Whitsunday Coast (Proserpine), Rockhampton, Hervey Bay and Townsville. Brisbane Airport Corporation’s (BAC) CEO and Managing Director, Julieanne Alroe, said after Sydney, Brisbane has the next best domestic network of all Australian airports in terms of the number of destinations offered. “Brisbane Airport currently has 44 domestic destinations in its network, 25 of which are Queensland towns or cities,” she said. With over 1,300 flights and almost 140,000 seats to and from intrastate destinations each week on average, Brisbane Airport continues to play an important role in keeping the State connected. “In the last 12 months we’ve seen 22 per cent growth in flights and 20 per cent growth in seats offered to and from intrastate destinations and we expect this trend to continue,” she said. As well as keeping regional communities connected to the capital city, Brisbane Airport’s extensive intrastate network also helps take international visitors in Brisbane to regional destinations. The International Visitor Survey conducted by Tourism Research Australia noted that last calendar year 42 percent of all international visitors to Queensland’s tourism regions entered Australia at Brisbane Airport. “Brisbane Airport is the front-door to Queensland for many international visitors. “This is why BAC’s commitment to investing in development including upgrading existing airport infrastructure and building for the future is so important for Queensland as a whole,” Ms Alroe said. In March, total passenger numbers through Brisbane Airport increased by 7.9 per cent, with an additional 127,000 travellers through the Domestic and International Terminals compared to the same time last year. Separately, international passengers increased by 11.1 per cent year-on-year, with domestic traffic up 7.1 per cent for the same period. |

Cairns-Brisbane air route ranked in top 3
THE Cairns-Brisbane air route has become the best performing in Queensland, and Brisbane Airport's third busiest link in Australia.
Brisbane now ranks Cairns third to Sydney and Melbourne and ahead of Townsville (fourth), Perth (fifth), Mackay (sixth) and Adelaide (seventh). In the 12 months to the end of March 917,000 passengers have travelled between Cairns and Brisbane. Brisbane Airport Corporation chief executive officer Julieanne Alroe said the 96,100 passengers between both ports in March 2012 represented an increase of 9.3 per cent or 8100 passengers more than in March last year. She said there were 48,600 arrivals from Cairns (up 4000) and 47,500 departures from Brisbane (up 4100). "Available seats to Cairns of either additional services and/or larger aircraft increased by 11.2 per cent year on year," Ms Alroe said. "Brisbane's recent passenger figures indicate intrastate travel between Brisbane and regional Queensland is growing at more than double the rate of interstate travel," she said. "So significant is the growth that once popular interstate routes are being pushed out of Brisbane's top 20 city pairs." Ms Alroe said after Sydney, Brisbane had the next best domestic network of all Australian airports in terms of the number of destinations offered. Cairns Airport chief executive officer Kevin Brown said the growth in passenger numbers on the Brisbane-Cairns route was encouraging. "There was a 9.3 per cent increase in passenger numbers on this route this March compared with the same month in the previous year," he said. "The total of 96,000 passengers travelling between Cairns and Brisbane highlights the strength of the intrastate tourism and business market," Mr Brown said. "We are fortunate to have Cairns-Brisbane direct services provided by all three of our major domestic carriers, Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin as well as connections through QantasLink. http://www.cairns.com.au/article/201...ocal-news.html |

Sorry for the general question: Anyone hear of any international expansion in terms of airlines or destinations this year. It just seems like its going to be a bit of a quiet year for BNE.
I'd like to see HKT and HNL come back. Any new news on Vietnam, Hawaiian or Cebu Pacific?? or JAL, they said they would come back once profitable?? |

Hi Joel
May i discuss this a little. I believe very little increase in international flights till late October at the very earliest. In the period from now till then we will only see seasonal increases in NZ flights with PB and NZ and QF. TG will resume to daily and QF 008 from DFW will go daily.KE will also add services. Now from late October i believe our best chances are getting some of the lost carriers back. GA,PR,BI and later on JL may all come back with JL not till late 2013 at the earliest. I can see Virgin operating BNE-HKG or possibly BNE-TYO. Cebu have filed for MNL-BNE as well as MEL and SYD but all 3 cities cannot commence till mid-late 2013 when they get their 333's. VN have nominated BNE as a start up city but who knows when. HA have said that if SYD 330 services go well then a 2nd city in Australia will start so who knows ??? CA or MU .I feel we will have one of these 2 by 2014 as growth into BNE is around 20% last year. So basically not a lot of growth internationally in the next 12 months. Our growth will come from FIFO and regional QLD As well as bne-syd and bne-mel routes. I have found out that the new FIFO terminal will be just south of the current DJ terminal. With JetGo getting their AOC it will start flights next month out of BNE so a new carrier.I have heard that Calibre Airways with Fokker 50's and Network with F100's as well as a new J31 carrier Pacific Star(RPT) will all commence this year out of BNE on Fifo . |

Are TG daily? I thought they were. I always thought Garuda and Philippines will always never rule out coming back to Brisbane. There are all sorts of rumours flying around re Garuda, that they don't want to return to Brisbane, such nonsense. As for PR they also are not ruling out coming back though their failure in 2011 has left them weary. But I cannot see them saying no forever as Manilla's Qantas flight I have been told attracts big loads and it's only once a week. Time will tell but I do hope they return now. I think Japan Airlines is a given, though how they will compete with OOL is beyond me, personally if there was money and demand they should fly into BNE and OOL now they have smaller planes. Royal Brunai - really doubt they will return. Melbourne is better for them. Vietnam another on the list where they won't rule out direct flights. MU I also doubt but as you say growth, I tend to think Air China is likely sooner rather than later, especially if CZ decides to increase. I have heard that CZ is doing very well to this point in time out of BNE despite my chatting to people who claim it's a horrible flight and aircraft. But as for Garuda, they may be a crap airline but bring them back Virgin is a great airline to DPS but I prefer bigger planes on the BNE DPS route and we need more competition. HA to Honolulu is needed. As for United doubt it but again don't rule them out with more efficient aircraft though the QF and Virgin planes are enough on the DFW and LAX routes for now. The only other rumour I have heard, no evidence, is the possiblity by early 2013 of Cathay Pacific operating twice a day to Brisbane with 333 and 340. That is my understanding of the situations with Brisbane Airport so you are right but the main thing is PR and GA are not ruling out a return and the others are slim to, in JAL's case and to an extent Air China, highly likely. Of course and A380 would be nice for any airline but that is way in the future. But not impossible. I also wish we had a direct connection to London but anyway. Brisbane will come good. Any other information would be great but the main thing is, like retail, it is often not so much the global economy but it's also other factors that constrain growth but Brisbane will get more flights and carriers that's a given. But it's a matter of time. |

As posted crap airline but I hope this happens sooner rather than later, my understanding is the not being able to return to Brisbane is more of an aircraft thing rather than viablity. Just was some nonsense circulating that they did not want to come back to Brisbane because of some cultural reason posted by someone on an aviation board last year. Such BS.

TG was daily but because of the flooding at BKK earlier this year there is a backlog of aircraft requiring maintenance, so a number of routes including BNE will lose a few flights a week over the next 6 months at various times.

Ahh ok but they will remain as 772 not A330 I know they would like the A330 on the route but something to do with the kitchen or whatever, but we need to keep our 777's A330 are horrible aircraft for long-haul.
