Mangalore basks in gold frenzy

Quote:
Shops selling jewellery in the city were crowded with customers on Tuesday. Some shops seemed to have got extra staff to cater to the day's (Akshaya Tritiya) crowd.

Mangalore : People buying jewellery at a shop in city, today being Akshaya Tritiya in Mangalore on Tuesday.

Reshma, a working woman, said she had finished work and headed to a jewellery shop in Hampankatta in the evening because she believed she should buy some gold on the day. A woman, on a visit to Mangalore from Mumbai, said that the price of gold in Mumbai was higher by Rs. 2,000 a gram than in Mangalore. Her sister, who was buying diamonds, said she had decided she wanted to buy jewellery and thought that Tuesday was a good day.

Umavathi Shetty from B.C. Road, shopping with her friends Shivani Shetty and Dhanu from Mangalore, said, “This trend (of buying gold for the festival) didn't exist earlier.” A total of 85.5 gram of gold was sold on Tuesday at four post offices in Mangalore, according to the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices (SSPO), Mangalore Division. Among them, sales at the post office in Surathkal were the highest with 33.5 gram sold for Rs. 1,05,408.

At Pandeshwar Head Post office, 28 gram of gold was sold for Rs. 98,752. At Hampankatta post office, 22 gram was sold for Rs. 72,158. At Balmatta Post Office, two gram was sold (two coins of 1 gram each).

Raghunath Shet, Managing Partner, S.L. Shet Jewellers and Diamond House and President, Dakshina Kannada Swarna Vyaapaari Sangha, told The Hindu that sales on Tuesday were “on par with last year”. He said that this year, sales are split over two days because Akshaya Tritiya is being observed on Monday and Tuesday. The “Bharani krittika” factor affected sales. “That small hitch was there,” he said.

Suresh, PRO, Jos Alukkas, refused to reveal the quantity of sales that took place on Tuesday but said it was comparable to that of last year's on the same day.

Sources in State Bank of India (SBI) said that sales figures would be consolidated and known only on Wednesday.

The Hindu contacted officials concerned in Corporation Bank but no information was made available.
No wonder why the Jewellery shops are on the rise in the Coastal city.

More STD than local calls from Mangalore
The Hindu, MANGALORE, April 30, 2012

Quote:
Call usage trends (recorded by a mobile phone service provider) show that in Mangalore, a large chunk of calls is for STD, said Yasir Azman, Circle Business Head, Karnataka Hub, Uninor Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Private Ltd, a Telenor-Unitech company, at a press meet in the city on Sunday.

While calls made in the rest of State showed that 14 per cent were STD calls, in Mangalore, 42 per cent of the time spent on calls was for STD.

The STD calls were driven possibly by businesspersons and students, he said.

Mr Azman said the In February, the company acquired the highest number (among telecom companies) of new subscribers in Karnataka, he said.

The company provided services in 13 of India's 22 telecom circles.

It has 40 million subscribers in India, including 22 lakh in Karnataka, 1, 13,000 in the State's coastal belt, and 40,000 in Mangalore, Mr. Azman said.

Mangalore: Last Patch of Forest Area on Court Hill Falls Prey to 'Development'

Mangalore, May 1: The northern slope of the court hill harboured the last patch of the original forest which once covered the entire hill. The patch though small, formed an ecological niche of representative trees of the area. Perched on these trees were lianas – creepers with a stems having a girth of a man’s arm. It must have taken centuries for them to reach this size. The trees provided a living space for epiphytes like ferns and orchids characteristic of the flora of the region. The tree canopies were a refuge to many a bird in the middle of the city. The early morning walkers on the court road could enjoy listening to them singing to their hearts content in the shelter of the trees. The area was a home to a number of reptiles and frogs which are considered to be endangered.

The uppermost portion of this area below the Museum and the High School Building of St Aloysius College has been preserved as “ ALVANA” the biodiversity park of the college. Still found intact is the strip just above the court road leading to Karangalpady. Several years ago this road was proposed to be widened by cutting down several trees on the upper side of the road. However heeding the representation made by alert citizens, the proposal was dropped and the trees were saved. A portion of the green cover was destroyed to make space for the proposed “Ambedkar Bhavan”. Though this has not materialized till date, the age old majestic trees which stood there are gone forever.

The last bit of green cover left on this slope, along the steps leading down to the PVS building, ( Sy no.205/IAIP) is proposed to be used for a 'Vakilara Bhavan'. The Forest Dept. permission has already been given to cut an enormous number (21 plus 17) precious trees to make space for the building - and the deed has already been done.

The majestic trees are felled and cut and strewn on the ground. The valuable lianas are dangling, cut off from their base. A condition has been put that the party has to plant two trees for every tree they cut. It may be that they will fulfill this condition. But it will not bring back the original tree cover which was there for ages and which forms the last representatives of the original flora of Mangalore.

Gone are the precious epiphytes growing on these hoary trees – orchids, ferns and herbs. Gone is the living space for the birds which will not return to nest on the new trees several years later after being now driven away. It is not just a simple matter cutting some 21 + 17 trees. Gone is the unique ecological nische preserved for thousands of years which can never, never be restored again. The cutting of these trees is an irreparable loss for the people of Mangalore and no less for the biodiversity of flora and fauna of Mangalore

They could have accommodated 'Ambedkar Bhavana' & 'Vakilara Bhavana' in one single building with more floors instead of chopping off all trees. What do you say?

I support cutting of trees only for expansion of bus routes & creration of mass transportation system. I don't mind other roads to remain with same width but, there should be very good walkable footpath from busstops. (Of course, for safety reasons every building should have proper road width for movement of fire service engines & other emergency vehicles. But, instead of increasing road width everywhere by cutting trees this could be better done by eliminating number of personal vehicles on roads as much as possible.)There was so much halla-gulla raised for cutting trees for Valencia road & Pumpwell Bus Trasnsportation Hub. The trees there were small ones & not of much heritage values. But, court road trees definitely have heritage values. Is it because most of important politicians are vakils (lawyers) they are not talking against this?

It is not understandable why people are taking hints from 'Bearys Valencia' and construct buildings saving as much as trees as possible.

Novel projects to celebrate Yellappa centenary soon

Quote:
Mangalore, May 6, 2012, DHNS :

A decision in this regard will be taken soon, says CM Sadananda Gowda

As the birth centenary of freedom fighter Attavar Yellappa is celebrated this year, the State government would consider to take initiatives in Mangalore city to commemorate the achievements of Yellappa, said Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda.

Speaking at the valedictory programme of the birth centenary celebration of Barrister Attavar Yellappa at Loyola Hall on Sunday, the CM said that a few demands including to name Padil circle and Attavar road after Yellappa and to start a study chair at Mangalore University in the name of Yellappa, have been placed before the government.

“I will convene a meeting in near future to discuss the matter and the right decision will be taken in this regard,” the CM said.

Analysing the state of affairs in the country, the CM said that with the nation facing a lot of problems, now the time has come for every Indian to wake up and fight to preserve the freedom of the nation which people like Yellappa had secured for India.

“The social evils like terrorism, corruption, political instability are dampening the strength of the nation. Selfishness of the people is blocking the road towards development.

Hence, we all should strive hard to make India self sufficient in all respects,” said the Chief Minister.Union Minister for Corporate Affairs M Veerappa Moily after releasing the souvenir asked the Indians to fight against the evil forces and make the country free.

“India may not be having the need to fight against British today, but we are in a situation where we will have to fight against social, political and economic evil forces.

Today the country needs people like Yellappa to fight for the freedom,” said the Minister.

Five family members of erstwhile freedom fighters were felicitated on the occasion. Those who received felicitation were: Subratho Bose (nephew of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose), Adil Shah Nawaz Khan (grandson of Captain Shah Nawaz Khan), Poornima Dillon (daughter-in-law of Colonel G S Dillon), V P Saini (Chairman of Netaji Research Centre, Punjab) and Professor Jagmohan Singh (nephew of Bhagat Singh).

Former Lokayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde presided over the function.

KSRTC pre-paid autorickshaw counter fails to take off
The Hindu
MANGALORE, May 8, 2012

The counter remains closed because of lack of revenue for the agency operating it'
Quote:

Prepaid Autorickshaw counter at KSRTC bus Stand at Bejai is alleged to function as an when it likes in Mangalore

The pre-paid autorickshaw counter at the KSRTC bus-stand in Bejai has not been working for the last few days. This counter is among the two pre-paid counters started by the district administration on October 2, 2011.

“This counter has not been working because of lack of revenue for the agency operating the counter. It (the agency) is not getting revenue to pay the salary to the person manning the counter. We are rethinking about running the counter,” said Regional Transport Officer C. Mallikarjuna. The administration was also considering changing the agency, he said.

The pre-paid autorickshaw counters were opened at the KSRTC bus stand and at the Mangalore Central Railway Station simultaneously. Mangalore Association of Travel Agents (MATA) was assigned the task of running the two counters. “The association is getting revenue at the Railway station, but not at the bus stand,” Mr. Mallikarjuna said. The operation of the counter had been closed for nearly 15 days just after two weeks of its launch in October.

“Was it operating at all,” questioned Prashant Hegde, a resident of Car Street. Mr. Hegde said he had hardly seen the counter operating in the last few months.

“In fact I got to know about the counter only recently. Usually I come out of the bus stand and catch the available autorickshaw,” he said. There was need to operate the counter systematically, he added.

Autorickshaw driver H. Ganesh attributed the poor response to the pre-paid counter to its location. “It is located at a corner.”

Most passengers, according to him, head straight to the main gate of the bus stand and often the pre-paid autorickshaw counter goes unnoticed, he said. Moreover, Mr. Ganesh said, the KSRTC officials refused to allow autorickshaws to park their vehicles near the portico of the bus stand.

“This (parking there) used to help us to pick up passengers, come to the counter and proceed,” he said.

To this, KSRTC Divisional Traffic Officer Sreeram said decision to bar parking of autorickshaws near the portico was done following a representation received from autorickshaw drivers themselves. “The autorickshaw drivers complained that some drivers picked up passengers without going through the pre-payment system. We are ready to restore it if it helps operation of the counter,” he said.

Dissent

President of MATA Roshan Pinto did not agree that the pre-paid counter was not running. “Yes the revenue has been poor. But it is not closed,” he said and added that the counter has been getting average revenue of Rs. 70 per day. “It is open between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.,” he said initially and then said, “We find more customers during this peak period. Rest of the time there will be hardly any takers for the service.” The counter however remained closed when The Hindu cross checked his claim on one occasion. On another occasion, it was open but there was nobody to man the counter.

‘Police Commissionerate has not eased traffic problems'
The Hindu
MANGALORE, May 8, 2012

Quote:
It has been more than two years since the Mangalore Police Commissionerate came into being.

According to some citizens, the Commissionerate has not made any difference to traffic issues or traffic management in the city. The Commissionerate was inaugurated on January 26, 2010, with the then Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Gopal B. Hosur taking the additional charge as the Police Commissioner. Seemant Kumar Singh took charge as the Commissioner on April 30, 2010.

G. Hanumantha Kamath, president, Nagarika Hitarakshana Samiti, Mangalore, said the chaos at main traffic junctions in the city has continued.

He said that earlier (two years ago), whenever the samiti raised traffic issues with the police their standard reply was that setting up of a Commissionerate would help as there would be focused attention on addressing these issues. “After two years, I do not see improvement in traffic management,” said Mr. Kamath. Authorities in the Commissionerate did not have the “will power” to solve the issues, he said.

Nyzil Noronha, founder, Chaitanya Foundation, a voluntary organisation, said that drivers on KSRTC Junction-Bejai Church Road flouted lane discipline by driving in opposite directions even as the police remained mute spectators. Similar was the situation at the KSRTC Junction.

He said that in Ambedkar Circle, drivers stopped their vehicles close to the traffic umbrella (or police umbrella) in the middle of the circle. Pedestrians' found it difficult to cross the roads. Police did not take any action, he said.

A senior business executive in the city said that traffic management had improved now but not “effectively”. He said that the police had failed to control bus lobby and some autorickshaw drivers who often flouted traffic rules.

The police were not taking action against drivers who spoke on cellphones while driving, he said.

This village is still waiting for electricity

Mangalore Today News Network

Quote:
Belthangady, May 9, 2012: Life is unthinkable in the absence of electricity in this modern day world. But people of a village in Belthangady taluk have been living without electricity for decades together and the situation has not seen any change as to yet. This is a classic example which is testimony to the absolute lack of will power and determination on the part of the elected representatives. This issue gains all the more relevance because this village is in the home district of the Chief Minister as well as the Energy Minister of the state.

Not that this place called Machina is a very remote village; it is just 1.5 kms away from the taluk headquarters, Belthangady.Residents of this village curse their fate for having to live under kerosene lamps. Most of the villagers being farmers, they are the worst hit in the absence of electricity.

Having the credit of being the most industrialized district in Karnataka, many villages have obtained the basic facilities and are heading towards development. But Machina seems to be an exception. The village has electricity poles outside houses, but has been deprived of electricity connection, courtesy the contractors mafia. Villagers say a few years ago, an electrical contractor collected Rs. 500 from each family, promising electricity connection, but never turned up later. They also complain that they are being bullied by electrical contractors to pay electric poll and TC charges.

Around 150 houses in Mudipire, Kodiyelu, Nerolupalke, and other areas of Machina rely absolutely on kerosene lamps from decades and the MESCOM, fully aware of the fact, has failed to respond to their pleas so far. Apart from farmers, there are daily wage earners and rollers, majority of whom belong to the SC/ST and economically weaker sections of society. Farmers are the unhappiest lot as they depend heavily on kerosene pumps and the four liters of kerosene they receive every month from the fair price shop is highly insuffice to light the lamps at home and run pump sets in the farms. They have to pay Rs. 35 per liter of kerosene in the open market and this has made life very miserable for these poor villagers.

Says Rukmini, “We depend on agriculture. We grow coconut and arecanut, and to provide sufficient water for our plantations, we have to pump water through kerosene pumps. We have applied for electricity connection through the Panchayat, but we still haven’t been provided electricity.” “Though the chief minister and the home minister hail from this district, they have done nothing to solve our problems. We have been trying for an electricity connection for the past 15 years, yet the authorities have turned a deaf ear to our pleas. We cannot afford to purchase kerosene at a higher cost in the open market,” she adds.

Even the students of this village are the worst hit as studying in the light of kerosene lamps has become difficult for them.

The villagers now seem to be determined to fight against the apathy of the elected representatives who arrive at their door steps only during election time, make promises and conveniently forget them once they come to power. . They now say they will boycott polls in the future unless they are provided with electric connection.

Today, the whole of Machina is united and is making an ardent appeal to Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda and the Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje to grant them the much needed ‘power.’ Will their appeal be heard?
This is the most surprising thing in South Kanara.. Hard for me to believe

Port City, a labourers’ paradise
Surathkal, May 10, 2012, DHNS

Persons from Bihar, Orissa, Jharkand earn a minimum of 200 a day as against 50 in their hometowns.
Quote:
The MSEZ work which requires a huge number of contract workers, has highest number of workers from the states outside Karnataka.

These workers who are taken to the work site in the morning in the vehicles reserved for the transportaion purpose, return from their work in the evening and take shelter in the rooms given to them by the contract company.

These hard workers who rarely take leave from their work, are dedicated and earn their livelihood in Dakshina Kannada district.

Majority of these workers are from Jharkand, Bihar, Orissa, Uttaranchal, Punjab and other states. The workers also come from North Karnataka and for these workers, Mangalore has turned out to be a work paradise.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, a worker Yadhu Rao Bosle from Jharkand called Mangalore as a heaven for work. “If I work in my home town, I would get free tea and meals and wage of maximum Rs 50 with which I can not really manage my home.

On the other hand, if I work here as a contract worker, I would get minimum Rs 200 wage per day while some times, it would reach Rs 300 and 400 too. Our food and shelter is looked after by the company.

As I do not have to spend my salary for except a few needs, I can take home lot of money when I return,” he says.

Narrating his life story, another worker Ramparwesh said that he owned six acres of land in his village and the yield was considerably good.

But the government broke his dreams as the villagers’ lands were acquired for the construction work of a company. “We were not given employment and we have been forced to fight for our rights. In this background, I have come here to work hard and earn money and I am happy with my work,” he said.

These workers from outside the State are experts in civil work like painting, flooring, tile fixing, land digging, land levelling etc. The workers who work in a team, finish the assigned job promptly in the given time.

Despite they being given weekly off on one day a week, they arrive at the site and work for at least half a day. In fact, most of the hotels in Surathkal too have young employees from outside the State.
