CHICAGO Trip (2/21/12) Pictures Part 3: Day 2

Hey again, Chicago forumers!

Here is part 3 of my Chicago trip, which includes all of my second day (Tuesday, February 21) of exploring more of your amazing city, the Art Institute, Chicago-style pizza, and the Red Wings/Blackhawks game @ the United Center.

Without further ado, Part 3 (Day 2) of my trip to the Windy City!

Started off on Michigan Avenue, by the Marilyn Monroe statue...

Amazing detail of the Michigan Avenue bridge… originally called the DuSable bridge, built from 1918-20.

Carbide and Carbon Building, Art Deco building designed by Daniel Burnham, built in 1929. Home to the Hard Rock Hotel Chicago.

Two Prudential Plaza, sixth tallest building in Chicago, completed in 1990.

AON Center, aka Amoco Building, third tallest building in Chicago, completed in 1972.

Aqua Tower, condominium and hotel building completed in 2010. This would likely take the title of the "sexiest" building in the City of Chicago. Designed by Jeanne Gang, it is the tallest building in the world with a female as lead architect.

Former Chicago Public Library, now Chicago Cultural Center on Michigan Avenue, built in 1893 by C.A. Coolidge and Robert C. Spencer

The architecture along the west side of Michigan Avenue across from Millennium Park is amazing...

Wrigley Square in Millennium Park

Millennium Park...

One and Two Prudential Plaza, AON Center, and other buildings from Millennium Park...

One of the city's unique modern buildings, the Smurfit-Stone Building, some people call it the "Diamond Building" for obvious reasons. Completed in 1984.

The most famous landmark in Millennium Park, a steel sculpture called "Cloud Gate", aka The Bean...

These faces in Millennium Park creeped me out for some reason, felt I was being watched in real life! This sculpture artwork is called "Crown Fountain".

He looks like he needs to go back to bed...

Beautiful old Michigan Avenue buildings...

Part of the Loop from Millennium Park again...

Art Institute of Chicago

Amazing Main Entrance of the Art Institute… it was built in 1893. Second-largest art museum in the United States.

Side of the Art Institute of Chicago...

In one of the gardens of the Art Institute lies this magnificent work, a preserved piece of the now-demolished Chicago Exchange Building, designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan....

Inside the Art Institute...

These monuments are mini-replicas of those found at various sites in Chicago. This is the Flamingo sculpture, found in Federal Plaza.

I saw this in front of Daley Center...

Exchange room, designed by Louis Sullivan, preserved and reconstructed in the museum after the Chicago Stock Exchange building's demolition...

Detail of the tiles inside the Exchange Room...

"Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper...

"American Gothic" by Grant Wood, one of the most famous paintings in the United States...

"Nightlife" by Archibald Motley Jr., designed to reflect how African-Americans hung out at jazz clubs in Chicago back in the day...

Center of the building...

I love Tiffany lamps...

Something about ladies in paintings turns me on...

Painting of Niagara Falls...

Portrait of Henry Dearborn, Fort Dearborn in Chicago was named after him, and I believe Dearborn Street and Dearborn, Michigan were named after him as well.

By the way, in this building, that child with the mother is A BOY, not a girl. Back in the day, boys and girls at young ages dressed alike.

Hello, Abe...

I also enjoy these scenic paintings...

Ganesha sculpture...

An Egyptian sculpture demonstrating Yoga apparently...

I have no idea what this idea, it's a three headed things with five arms on each side.

The Art Institute's Famous stairway...

These are what look to be an ancient ruin, they're all connected...

This is "Sunday in the Park", probably the most celebrated artwork in this building, painted by Georges Seurat... of course, this painting was also in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".

[IMG][/IMG]

African Artifacts…

Is it just me or were African people back in the day making quite a fashion statement...

Running a bit short on time, took the L train from Adams/Wabash to State/Lake as a shortcut to refresh myself...

… and to dine at Gino's East Pizzeria and treat myself to authentic Chicago Style Pizza!

Inside...

With all the names in whiteout, a LOT of people have eaten here!

Blackhawks logo, ENEMY!!!

This pizza I am about to have is WELL WORTH THE WAIT. Even had a good salad before... the Italian dressing was nice… BTW, just to let you Chicago deep dish pizza lovers know, typically, it will take around 40-45 minutes to took your 'za, so give yourself lots of time when you go. I did, and had an awesome conversation with my server, Shaun, who worked at this location.

This is a small meaty legend, this has to have been the best pizza I have ever eaten in my life...

Gino's East, best part, is right behind my hotel, across the street!

After dinner, walked down to the Green Line towards United Center, greeted by hockey fans, lot of Red Wings fans living in Chicago, so I didn't feel alienated.

Chicago skyline from Ashland Boulevard/Avenue

Me following Red Wings fans...

United Center, game start at 7, got here at 6:47, CTA L train did its job well!

United Center, home of the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League and the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association, built 1992-1994. Capacity of over 21,000 for various events...

Concourse…

I was in the 200 section...

My seats in the arena...

Scoreboard...

Opening face-off!

Action in the Blackhawks end, Red Wings on the power play

RED WINGS SCORE! Early 1-0 lead!

More first period action...

Jimmy Howard (goalie) returned to the Red Wings lineup and kept the Hawks off the score sheet early on...

Corey Crawford did the same for the Blackhawks...

Tommy Hawk, the Blackhawks' mascot...

Back for the second period!

Second period action...

Blackhawks score to tie the game at 1!

This arena is sometimes called, "The Madhouse on Madison"

Scoreboard again… this arena was much louder than the Joe...

3rd period now...

Blackhawks score an early 3rd period goal to get their first lead of the game...

I've heard of this cheese spread before, looks like a localized Cheez Whiz made in Wisconsin, Merkt's.

Rick Neilsen of Cheap Trick doing surrender with the Blackhawks rock band...

Action late in the third period...

Red Wings pull their goalie for an extra attacker...

But Corey Crawford closes the door...

Blackhawks win the game, 2-1!

Hawks saluting the home crowd, a tradition for them...

First Baptist Congregational Church, on Ashland Blvd...

Chicago skyline...

Union Park, urban park on Chicago's West Side, near the United Center...

Ashland Green/Pink Line CTA L train station...

Transferred to Lake on the Red Line...

John Hancock Center, Water Tower, and Water Tower Place...

Magnificent Mile at night...

Goodnight again, Chicago!

Hope you enjoyed my second day pictures! Third and fourth day coming soon!

Thanks again for another wonderful tour. I especially love your tour of the Art Institute, as well as the selections you made. I used to spend all my lunch hours there, and I miss the easy proximity of the AIC from the Loop. The Met is not exactly walking distance from Midtown or Downtown Manhattan...

Nice set JayBird. I also liked your pictures on the skyscrapers themselves and the ones of the Art Institute. I didn't know it housed so many famous paintings.

I would have loved to see more of the elevated train stations as well. It would be nice to compare the conditions there and the ones here in NYC

Nice pics! If I can recall, the sculpture standing outside the city hall and Daley Center is Picasso's.

Gino's East is always packed up with people especially at night, so you'll also have to wait standing in line, but deep dish pizza with sausage is definitely worth the wait!
What's an "italian dressing" by the way?
