WOW! That second photo looks so different then what that area looks like today. The State Pen has been replaced by the Arena District and the area around the old Union Station is now the Convention Center and Hyett Hotel. Amazing!

Agreed...this doesn't even look real! I wasn't aware that the falls (I'm assuming this is the American side?) at one time had huge mills like that built above it.

Really goes to show just how completely unconcerned people were in that era in time about preserving our natural and environmental treasures.

These mill houses were built north of the actual waterfall. Water was diverted by canals from the Niagara River and over the sides of the gorge to generate power. On the Canadian side, a power station was built much closer the falls to capture that energy but has long since been abandoned. Where these old wooden structures once sat is now a state park while further north, the huge Robert Moses Niagara Falls Hydroelectric Power Station hums away along with a massive reservoir of water diverted nightly from the falls to send through their turbines.

In this 1933 photo, you can see the last vestiges of the Mill District just beyond the bridge.

One thing that clearly sticks out is the people in the old photos almost always wore a hat. I wonder if that would ever come back in style.

Goldman (shown here in Union Square, New York in 1916)

In Yonkers, men and many women all donned their hats and crowded around to see President Theodore Roosevelt speak in 1910.
