Friends is there any big project coming up in Narasimhanaicken Palayam on Mettupalayam Road? Some years back Martin Properties have bought a huge land bank (may be nearly 1000 acres) below the hill. While buying they say its for a big township. Do anyone have any idea about that?

Gail plan for pipeline irks farmers in Western Tamil Nadu COIMBATORE: Gail India's plan to channel a natural gas pipeline through farmlands in nine districts of western Tamil Nadu has united farmers in the region, who fear that it will destroy their fields. Pamphlets distributed by farmers' organisations at a meeting in the city on Saturday urged farmers to unite in protest to stop the plan. The Farmers' Livelihood Protection Committee (FLPC) organised a public meeting here on Saturday at the CD Foundation Community Hall in Chettipalayam condemned the move to man the pipeline with the help of farmers. The committee accused Gail of not consulting with farmers before deciding to use their land for the pipeline. At the meeting, various farmers and members of the public expressed their desire that the pipeline be re-routed through the national highways. "The member of Parliament PR Natarajan had led the protest to bring trains to Coimbatore. He should also lead the protest to protect farmers from the natural gas pipeline," said G K Nagaraj, executive committee member and Kongu Nadu Munnetra Peravai district secretary. Farmers are also protesting the lack of protection for the pipeline, which will run across fields and human habitations. They are up in arms against a Central government proposal to get farmers themselves to man the pipeline and protect it from any impending disaster. The farmers said that Gail and Centre had adopted a combative stance against them and had threatened their livelihood. They said all pleas to reroute the pipeline had fallen on deaf ears and their questions on their safety had not been addressed yet.

NEW DELHI: Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh's venture Sporting Edge Communities is close to tying up with two developers in Pune and Coimbatore to set up integrated sports infrastructure in upcoming residential townships. "We are in advanced negotiations with developers in I ndia. We want to give sporting opportunities to Indian kids," said Waugh, who has evolved the Sporting Edge model exclusively for the Indian market. He declined to share the names of the developers. Waugh plans to bring in sports icons such as the swimming legend Ian Thorpe and Australian footballer Lucas Neill to set up facilities for aquatic sports and soccer training, along with cricket academies by Cricket New South Wales, to large townships. His company is also in talks with potential developers in Ahmedabad, the national capital region and somewhere in central India. "This would create a sporting environment and enable a township development to be different from others," Waugh said. According to his website, the model "provides end-to-end solution to real estate developers to incorporate sport and leisure related components in their residential township". In this venture, Waugh has two partners, Kolkata-based Gautam Gadgil and Australian Jeff Kuhne. Last year, Sporting Edge had tied up with a developer making a township in Burdwan near Kolkata. Waugh's firm will provide intellectual property and technology required to set up and run different sports academies that their partners will set up. "The type of facilities would be chosen depending on where the township is located and which sport is popular there," says Waugh. In Punjab, for instance, a hockey academy can be set up along with cricketing infrastructure. The financial model will be such that these sports academies generate income and residents in the townships don't complain a few months down the line about the lack of a coach or sports infrastructure. Developers across the country are realising that real estate and sports make a profitable marketing mix. Over the past few years, developers in Pune, Kolkata, Noida, Greater Noida and Ahmedabad have announced sports-based townships that include a Formula One racing track, a full-sized cricket stadium, golf-courses, horse riding and other sporting options that are likely to attract buyers. The Jaypee Group, for instance, built India's first Formula One racing track at its sports city in the national capital region. "Buyers, especially the younger lot, are getting conscious about sports and that becomes a great selling point for us," said Sameer Gaur, managing director and chief executive officer of Jaypee Sports International. Waugh turned an entrepreneur early on, dabbling into social media gaming company PlayUp during his cricketing days. "It's like the Facebook of sports," said Waugh, about the company that makes mobile phone apps to connect users with live sports from across the globe. |

Green enthusiasts to knock on CM's doors to end tree felling
Massive rally planned in protest against the civic body's resolution seeking legal action against those who oppose cutting trees
A meeting of nature conservation groups and green enthusiasts on Sunday resolved to write to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa expressing their anguish over a resolution passed by the civic body seeking legal action against those who oppose tree cutting. The meeting also resolved to seek an appointment with the Chief Minister. Representatives from Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore, Siruthuli, Osai, Oli, Environment Conservation Group, CODISSIA, Nature Conservation Group, Pasumpulari, Sai Baba Colony Residents' Association, Nilgiris Wildlife and Environment Association and a host of others took part in the meeting. K. Kalidasan of Osai told The Hindu that the meeting termed a resolution of the civic body ‘very unfortunate' as it tries to brand nature enthusiasts as a group opposed to development works. The civic body had recently passed a resolution seeking legal action against those fighting for the survival of the remaining green patches. He added that nature enthusiasts are not against development works and such an image was being created so as to turn the public ire against them. “We want the administration and the civic body to only explore ways and means to spare trees while carrying out development works”, Mr. Kalidasan said. Letter It was decided at the meeting to first write to the Chief Minister to draw her attention towards the need for saving trees especially when her Government has embarked on a massive afforestation programme. The letter would also explain in detail the protests carried out in the recent times and the tone and tenor of the civic body's resolution, which was almost an attempt to indulge in arm twisting and intimidation, Mr. Kalidasan said. The letter would also seek an appointment with the Chief Minister to explain the recent incidents of tree cutting and the background behind the civic body's resolution. All associations have decided to join hands and take out a rally in protest against the resolution. To prevent incidents of nature enthusiasts being intimidated and recent incidents of arm twisting, it was also decided to explore ways for getting a legal insulation. The resolutions passed at the meeting on Sunday will translate into action within the next 10 days, he added. Lawyer M. Venilla, who represented the NGOs before the Principal District Munsiff Court for obtaining a stay against tree cutting on Marudhamalai Road, has asked the citizens of Coimbatore to turn up on Monday and implead themselves in the case so as to strengthen the cause. C.R. Jayaprakash, Executive Committee Member of Nilgiris Wildlife and Environment Association, said that these attempts should be opposed tooth and nail and should not be seen as an attempt to dilute the role and responsibilities of the Tree Protection Committee. He added that the Tree Protection Committee should seek legal recourse to prevent loss of greenery. Source: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle3369379.ece

Job work powerloom units seek market support ![]() Several weavers in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts, which have nearly two lakh powerloom units taking up job work for larger fabric manufacturers, are looking at opportunities to market their products directly. P. Kumarasamy, secretary of the Coimbatore District Job Working Powerloom Unit Owners' Association, told The Hindu on Monday that almost all the job working looms in the two districts make grey fabric, which is processed later. These are mostly for demand from the Northern States. Orders from the State Government for school uniform, saris and dhotis are mainly distributed to the cooperative societies. Recently the Government sought bids for manufacture of large number of saris for free distribution. However, individual small-scale powerloom units will not be able to take up such orders. Hence, the association has appealed to the State Government to permit the small-scale powerloom units that are not with the cooperative societies to take up bulk orders jointly. Nearly 50 per cent of the job working powerloom units are ready to take up orders directly. They need market guidance and support. These weavers are apprehensive of taking up private orders immediately. Hence, they should be supported with orders from the Government. “We need a development corporation,” says Mr. Kumarasamy. Norms The Government should fix the price and specify the quality standards for fabric. Units that are capable of meeting these two norms should be permitted to cater to Government orders, he said. These job work powerloom units are willing to diversify to new varieties such as fabric made of dyed yarn and also have the capacity to manufacture at competitive prices. Since most of the job work units are small-scale they do not have financial capacity to take up large scale orders individually. They should be helped to take up bulk orders in groups, he said.

Coimbatore needs to develop affordable housing, says expert
If the Census 2011 data on Tamil Nadu houses, household amenities and assets are an indication, Coimbatore District has a crying need for affordable housing.
![]() ![]() Of the 9,45,943 households in the district, nearly half of them have handmade tile (10.4 per cent) and machine-made tile (36 per cent) roofing. Of the rest, 41.1 per cent has concrete roofing. And, over 70 per cent have mud or cement flooring (10.6 per cent have mud flooring and 60.5 per cent have cement flooring). Almost 65 per cent of households have just one or two dwelling rooms. These are indications that majority of the households in the district live in semi-pucca houses. The provisional data of Census 2011 also shows that nearly 75 per cent of the population in the district resides in urban areas. There is an urgent need for the Government to focus on affordable housing. With huge demand for affordable pucca houses, innovative concepts should be adopted to promote large numbers of concrete roof houses that will be available to the residents at lower prices, says architect Arun Prasad, who has a Masters in Planning (housing). Of the total 11,69,752 census houses in the district, 10,93,949 are occupied. Nearly 7.3 per cent of these are used as residence-cum-office or as shops and offices. Another 4.6 per cent is used for non-residential purposes, and 1.6 per cent as factories, workshops, etc. Further, of the 9.45 lakh households, 36.6 per cent lives in rented houses. This is next only to Chennai (51.1 per cent) in the State. Apart from industrial growth, Coimbatore District also has established social infrastructure such as schools, colleges, and hospitals. Hence, many prefer to live in urban areas and there are many migrating to the district for their livelihood. Mixed land use pattern augurs well in Coimbatore and the rental market seems to be good, adds Mr. Arun Prasad. Regional planners should look at ways to stabilise population migration. “We need to create centres so that people do not migrate,” he says. There are two options: focus on vertical growth and develop infrastructure in hubs, as in the case of Japan. Since infrastructure costs are shooting up, such a concept will provide better facilities in specific neighbourhoods and bring down the need for long-distance transportation, etc. The other is to go in for development in all areas, he adds. The district is doing well in several other factors. For instance, about 60 per cent of the total households in the district have banking services, and 94.8 per cent have electricity for lighting. Sanitation facilities are also better in the district. Source:http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle3373142.ece

Corporation to start fish farming in Coimbatore lakes COIMBATORE: The city corporation is planning to lease out major water bodies within its limits and rope in private parties to start fish farming. Part of the lake restoration project, the corporation has sent a detailed report to the government for approval. "We will do pisciculture in these waters in a scientific manner. It will be a source of additional income for the corporation and the funds could be utilised for further maintenance of the water bodies," said TK Ponnusamy, Commissioner, Coimbatore Corporation. The report submitted by the civic body includes a proposal to start pisciculture farms in Ukkadam Lake, Valankulam, Muthannankulam, Singanallur, Selvampathi, Kumaraswami and Selvachinthamani lakes. The corporation will formally seek tenders and then lease out the water bodies to private individuals interested in taking it on lease. As of now, at least 350 acres of water bodies will be given on lease to rear fish. The fish younglings can be procured from fisheries and these fish could be caught and commercially sold. "We expect an annual revenue of about Rs 80,000 per acre of fish farm once it gets implemented," Ponnusamy added. The corporation will also renovate the perimeter of the lakes and erect proper fencing around it. Boating will also be started in Ukkadam Lake and walkways will be constructed around the perimeter of water bodies for jogging, with benches and concrete structures, except at Valankulam. "We will not permit any activity that will tamper the ecological balance of the water bodies," said Ponnusamy. However, at present, around 82 fishermen with TN government approved identity cards depend on Ukkadam lake for their survival. They fish in the lake twice daily. They said unauthorised dumping of waste into the water was affecting fish life as numbers are constantly dwindling. "The water is getting heavily polluted and nobody is taking any effort to clean it. Our catch is dwindling on a daily basis. There are at least 12 different varieties of fresh water fish species in the lake," said M Nandakumar, a fisherman at Ukkadam lake. The city corporation had plans to commercialise the water bodies two years ago by renovating the lakes and introducing various commercial activities and water sports. The proposal was also submitted to the district administration for its approval but eco activists in the city raised strong objection to the proposal and the civic body agreed to ensure that the ecological system of the lakes are not compromised for commercial activities.

Cold storage facility for Tomatoes near Kinathukadavu
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/12974242.cms COIMBATORE: Tomato farmers in the region have welcomed the government's decision to set up a cold storage facility for storing tomatoes at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore near Kinnathukkadavu, a predominant region where the vegetable is grown. The decision announced by the state agriculture minister S Damodaran is a great relief for over 50,000 tomato farmers in and around Coimbatore who send their crop to be sold at the wholesale vegetable markets in the district. "Tomatoes are very vulnerable to variations in temperature and storage conditions. Majority of the produce is lost as there is no proper storage facility at the moment. We welcome the government's decision to construct a cold storage facility," said P Kanthasamy, General Secretary, Tamil Nadu Farmers Association. However, the farmers are hopeful that the storage facility would be constructed within the next couple of months as the peak tomato season begins from June and lasts till December. The crop usually takes about 70 to 80 days before it is ready to be plucked. The government is expected to offer the cold storage facility to farmers at a nominal rate for a fixed duration. Most tomato farmers in the district are now opting for a specialised variety of tomato seed which has an extended shelf life of about a week. The farmers are left with a marginal profit of Rs 5 to 10 per kilogram of tomatoes at the whole sale market. Another demand put forth by farmers is that the government should procure tomatoes directly from them at the wholesale markets at Kinnathukkadavu, Nachampalayam and Alandurai from where about 50 to 60 crates of tomatoes are sent to Kerala daily.

Tree felling: plea dismissed The Principal District Munsiff Court, on Monday, turned down a petition by nature lovers challenging the move of the Highways Department to axe trees along Marudhamalai Road. The petition had contended that under the pretext of carrying out development works, the authorities were axing trees that were not hindering road-widening works. On behalf of R. Karpagam of Oli and T. Suresh of Maharani Avenue in Vadavalli, M. Vennila and K. Chandrasekhar moved a petition before the court on April 26 challenging the rampant tree cutting in the name of development works. The court granted an interim injunction till April 30 and appointed C. Kannan to file a report. He filed the report before the court on April 30. Ms. Vennila said that the court had stated that the petitioners were at liberty to seek remedy from a “competent authority.”
