Toll collection to start on B’lore-Hassan road
DHNS
Bangalore, April 30 2012

Quote:
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is likely to complete the road widening between Devihalli and Hassan by June 13. Once the work is completed, two more toll plazas will begin functioning.

Though the toll fee structure is yet to be worked out, depending on the quality of road, on an average 65 paise to Rs one per km will be the toll, according to Surendra Kumar, Project Director, Implementation Unit, NHAI.

In all, six toll collection points will have to function from Nelamangala to Bantwal Cross Road in Dakshina Kannada district via Shiradi Ghat.

Though the NHAI is confident of completing the work up to Hassan, it is not sure as to whether the State Forest department and the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests will part with forest land for widening the Shiradi stretch. At present, the State PWD is maintaining the Hassan-Shiradi Road.

Surendra Kumar told Deccan Herald that the NHAI had appointed Delhi-based Feeback Venture to prepare a detailed project report on the feasibility of widening the existing road from Hassan to BC Road. As per the preliminary DPR, in the Ghat section, the stretch could be widened to 30 mts maximum from the existing nine to 14 mts. The distance between Hassan and BC Road is about 134 km.

As many as 610 ha is required to widen the road from Hassan to BC Road, of which about 140 ha is forest land from Shiradi to Gundia. The total cost of widening the road in the Ghat section, considering the existing alignment, would be Rs 1,600 crore, the officer said.

He said the consultant agency has submitted the draft detail project report (DPR) to the principal chief conservator of forests on March 5. “Unless the Forest department gives us a green signal, we can’t proceed further. We require 140 ha to widen the narrow stretch in the Ghat area. But it is difficult to get just the two ha of forest land. If the Forest department gives clearance, then the proposal will go to the MoEF. We are yet to hear from the Forest department. We have acquired land up to Hassan,” he said.

However, A K Verma, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, said no proposal has been put forth before the department seeking forest land for widening the Ghat road.

Surendra Kumar said, the other options – tunnel or elevated road – is cost intensive and the Planning Commission may not approve the project. “If we have to spend Rs 1,600 crore for widening the existing road, for the tunnel or elevated road it would not be less than Rs 3,000 crore,” he said.

Government okays alternative route linking Mysore to Mananthavadi

Quote:
The State government has given its nod for the construction of an alternative road connecting Mysore and Mananthavadi, bypassing the Nagarahole National Park.

The existing road had led to controversies, as it passes through critical tiger habitat. The government released Rs 18 crore for the alternative road last week. The problem began five years ago when it was proposed to construct a 28.5-km road between Mysore and Mananthavadi to connect Karnataka with Kerala. Fourteen kilometre of the proposed road was to pass through the Nagarahole Park.

The work was awarded to Karnataka State Highways Improvement Project (KSHIP). With the proposed road dissecting the Nagarahole Park, wildlife experts contended that it was possible to construct an alternative road for at least 10 km out of the 14 km through the Park. Accordingly, a request was made to the KSHIP authorities to take up the work on the alternative route.

The KSHIP turned down the request on the ground that it was an expensive proposal and that the land for the alternative stretch was under the control of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department (RDPR).

Meera Saxena, the then Additional Chief Secretary, directed the KSHIP not to go ahead with the work.

After sustained efforts by wildlife expert Sanjay Gubbi and B J Hosmath, Field Director for Project Tiger and others, the RDPR transferred the land required for alternative road to Public Works Department in August 2010. The work has now gained momentum with the government releasing funds. The proposed alternative road, besides helping wildlife conservation in the Park, also provides connectivity to several nearby villages such as Udbur, Gundatthur, Kharapura, Belthur, Malali, Magge, KR Pura, Hosaholalu, Honnammana Katte etc.

These villages were bereft of a road connectivity till now.

Conservationists say the alternative proposal will help curb fragmentation of the sanctuaries. A recent study by Sanjay Gubbi and others has found that the traffic on the Mysore-Mananthavadi stretch has increased manifold.

An environment impact assessment conducted in 2003 recorded 50 vehicles a day and the latest study puts the number of vehicles at 1,150 a day. The Nagarahole National Park, spread over 643 sq km, is home to around 65 tigers and forms part of a larger tiger habitat comprising Bandipur, Mudumalai and Waynad protected areas.

May 31 deadline for Goa-Belgaum road via Chorla

Quote:
KERI: The long-awaited road from Chorla Ghat to Belgaum is expected to be ready soon, with Umesh Katti, district incharge minister for Belgaum, on Tuesday issuing directives to PWD officials and the contractor to complete the road by May 31.

With the completition of this road, the distance between Goa and Belgaum will be around 120km. Work on the road began in 1979. Belgaum, from Goa via Anmod Ghat is 155km and hence there was a big demand for the road to be completed as soon as possible. But many hurdles made it difficult to complete the road earlier.

Umesh Katti, during his visit to Chorla, issued directives to complete the road by May 31. Presently, about 10km from the border of Surla to Chorla-Goa border is expected to be completed soon. The minister has urged the contractor to complete the unfinished work of bridges and culverts at the earliest.

Improvements on the existing 50.10km-long road stretch from Peeranwadi to Goa border, were planned in 2007. But objections raised by the deputy conservator of forests, Belgaum division, made it difficult to complete the road on time. As large numbers of trees were required to be felled from private, government and forests land, the deputy conservator of forests had asked the Karnataka road development corporation ltd (KRDCL) to take required sanctions from the government in February 2008.

Finally in April 2011 the KRDCL succeeded in obtaining the sanctions to start the road. As a result the Peeranwadi to Kusmali road was completed two years ago. KRDCL has also successfully removed the sharp curve on the road near the Chorves rivulet. This road passes through the reserved forest areas of Belgaum district and through the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary.

This the continuation of Airport Road (Gokul Road) which is 4 lane U/C and it is re-aligned as the old existing road is near the airport. The AAI will acquire the old road as they are constructing the new terminal building for Hubli Airport.
This new 4 lane road will join the Hubli-Dharwad Byepass at Tarihal.....

Thanks.
I hope it's a four-six lane road and has an interchange with the bypass.

Presently I doubt there is a need for an interchange.. because that road isn't a trunk one.. it doesn't connect to a major town/city.

However, they should keep the land ready for an interchange in the future..

They should make some arrangement, such that the Bypass is dual carriageway at that stretch.
