'More fun' catchy but tourism needs infrastructure

MANILA, Philippines - The "It's More Fun in the Philippines" campaign is catchy, but former Finance Secretary Roberto de Ocampo said the government needs to drop taxes on airlines and make Clark the main gateway for Manila for tourism to flourish.

De Ocampo said Congress needs to replace the common carriers tax as soon as possible in part for airlines to resume direct flights to Europe.

Earlier this year, KLM ended the last direct flight from Manila to Europe, blaming the imposition of the tax for its decision.

(Content Omitted)....

The former Finance Secretary said the government should make Clark the main gateway to Manila to reduce congestion and delays in the air, runways and terminals of the capital's airport. The government is also urged to build an airport express to link Clark and Manila.

"We have to get cracking about moving the international airport perhaps to Clark and then infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure that has to be the point of concentration," de Ocampo said.

(Content Omitted)...

"Delays can happen because of corruption, but delays can also happen if there is well intentioned paralysis by analysis. It's the latter they should be watchful about and avoid... An imperfect decision is better than no decision at all," he said. - ANC

Depends on how far north but if you're talking because they still have to travel that far comparing to greater Manila area where the population is over 12 million already I believe, I know for sure that in 2010, it was 11,855,975 already. Considering the rise in airline travel in the Philippines is mostly domestic travel (over 15 million per year), I doubt if alot of pinoys in the North would go by air by 80% atleast but the ones who lives in the capital region, they mostly have families in other cities and provinces south of Metro Manila down to Davao. So yes, when we talk about convinience of the majority of air travelers since the international travelers (10Million per year) are alot less than domestic travelers, I can see why people would be complaining about the distance of Clark. Bulacan is so far a much better alternative that does not require reclaimation and that it is already close to NLEX, I dont see why more and more people would support the idea as oppose to Sangley and Clark. I believe Clark will still have air travelers which is mostly LCCs, having NAIA transfered to Bulacan should not affect that growth in Clark Airport.

Now, if Mar is indeed serious about reducing the flights on peak hours, then he is compelled to upgrading other airports outside Manila in installing Nav-Aids and runway lighting. The government, especially DOTC SHOULD HAVE acted before, not just the airlines alone. It's his responsibility. Also, living in a tropical country, darkness is not the only thing that hampers sunset and night landings, but also potential of thunderstorms or rains which would need important Nav-Aids such as VOR-DME, ILS, etc.

Not that, He should do something as well!
For starters, I like this collection of photos on the domestic side - the constellation, YS-11s, the DO-228 of Soriano; Asian Spirits Bae-146, Interisland's Yak, Zest MA-60, 5js DC-9(my last ride from them) and the usual airbus. Now for the main course which is traffic at NAIA - Roxas will have to move heaven and earth to fix this! Perhaps politicians have forgotten some simple rules in life, "prevention is always better than a cure"!

While it is true that proaction is better than reaction, the disease is already there and mar doesn't know he's painted himself in a corner! He's new to the industry and he needs to learn fast and find a "cure'!

Just think about it : when SM/ANG opened the press and the public that they are planning a 4 runway airport for Manila, and that ground breaking ceremonies could start this year, there must be an overall architectural plan, a layout and a rendering for that project at hand.

Anyone who can find and post that plan, layout and rendering here would be a big plus for us forumers !

My guess on Ang's / PAL's planned airport is that it will be something that will be mostly exclusive for PAL...

so I guess SMC is not successful in trying to get the contracts for Clark or NAIA is it? That's why they're planning something for their own...

Agree. perhaps they are optimistic about a NAIA contract or the future of PAL's operation in NAIA 2 (perhaps due to age of the terminal plus congestion).

San Miguel wants a brand new airport complex that they can completely control with matching ecozone plus own power plant.

Delta is buying a refinery to control its fuel bill. Since SMC owns Petron, can PAL get discounted price for fuel?

I don´t know if they are allowed to do that by law, but they surely will find a way to take care of it in the books. That would give them a little more of a competitive edge fighting Middle East carriers and their extremly low fuel prices.
