Dana aircraft makes emergency landing at Lagos airport
MAY 11, 2012 BY OYETUNJI ABIOYE LEAVE A COMMENT A McDonnell 83 aircraft belonging to Dana Airlines made an emergency landing on runway 19R of the Lagos airport on Thursday evening after experiencing “hydraulic failure” mid air. The aircraft, which was coming from Uyo with 86 passengers on board, developed a mechanical fault on its way to Lagos, aviation officials said. The development, it was learnt, forced the pilot to request for emergency landing from air traffic controllers on duty at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. The aircraft was later cleared to land at runway 19R of the airport at about 4:59pm. Officials said the 86 passengers on board were immediately evacuated from the aircraft as the plane could not move after landing on the runway. The runway 19R was consequently closed for over two hours by aviation authorities, while the passenger evacuation exercise was being carried out. The development, it was gathered, caused congestion in the airspace as foreign and local planes coming in to land at the airport could not do so immediately, forcing them to hover in the air for hours. The Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Dr. Harold Demuren, confirmed the incident. He, however, said that the emergency landing was successful and that there was no loss of life. “The aircraft developed a fault and it had to make emergency landing. The pilot requested to land on the 19R runway because it is longer. I am happy that all our personnel now have the safety management system culture in them. The aircraft landed safely. There was no loss of life,” Demuren said. The spokesman for Dana Airlines, Mr. Tony Usidamen, also confirmed the incident. “The aircraft was coming to Lagos from Uyo with 86 passengers. The pilot discovered loss of hydraulic pressure and contacted the control tower in Lagos to request for emergency landing. The emergency landing was later done and there was no loss of life. The passengers disembarked safely,” he said. However, sources said there was delay in getting evacuation buses to the airport after the pilot requested for emergency landing. |

Govt terminates N23bn hotel project at Lagos airport
Monday, 13 August 2012 By Wole Shadare THE Federal Government has terminated the $146 million (N23 billion) four-star hotel project, which was to have been constructed in front of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) terminal, over alleged non-performance by the concessionaires for the scheme. The project, being handled by Terminal Zero Nigeria Limited, was started in 2005 during the administration of Professor Babalola Borisade as Minister of Aviation. In its place, the site for the hotel project will now be re-modelled as a multi-storey car park. Spokesman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Akin Olukunle, who made the disclosure exclusively to The Guardian over the weekend, however stated that in re-awarding the contract, due process would be followed to ensure that work starts in earnest. The current makeshift car park at the airport has been assessed to be inadequate and lacks adequate security for users. At MMIA and Port Harcourt Internatinal Airport, receiving incoming passengers has been a harrowing experience, with those awaiting their arrivals being made to stand outside the terminal buildings, which have no good waiting facilities. Most users of the airport also told The Guardian that the indiscriminate and illegal parking of vehicles in the area, especially by government officials, has accentuated their pains, while seeing-off or welcoming passengers. Worse still, the premium portion of the current car park has been allocated to some government officials and multinational companies, with others pushed to the remote part of the facility, even when the favoured allocated area was not being patronised. The car park itself is a den of beggars, touts and currency dealers, a very unbefitting feature for an international airport trying to ‘compete’ with the best airports in the world. The Managing Director of Terminal Zero Limited, Gbenga Obadina, recently said the company was given the mandate to commence the construction of the four-star hotel at the airport. Obadina explained that the project was 100 per cent private sector initiative on “our part and our partners,” stressing that a couple of investors were involved in the project. He said: “When we got here, the old car park had about 600 parking slots. We were to build about 2,000 capacity at the current parking facility, which we believe to be futuristic, in addition to the hotel project”. A source close to the firm however, denied the allegation of non-performance leveled against it by FAAN, adding that the bottlenecks put on its path by the aviation agency was the reason for the slow pace of work. The official, who preferred anonymity, said the project promoter had scaled the environmental impact assessment hurdle of FAAN and was prepared to spend $146 million (about N23 billion) on the construction of the four-star and a car park within the vicinity. When completed, the project was expected to ease travellers’ accommodation pains, while the promoter was said to have assured that the edifice would eventually change the outlook of the airport on completion. He said the hotel, which was expected to have 400 rooms, would be called Terminal Zero Holiday Inn on completion, stressing that it was in line with situation in other international airports, such as Heathrow Airport in London and Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris, France where five star hotels are situated within the airport premises. source |

Ethiopian Airlines To Start Flights To Enugu Airport
Ethiopian Airlines says it plans to start flights to the city of Enugu, in south eastern Nigeria soon as part of its attempt to extend its flight destinations in Africa’s most populous country and West African Power house Nigeria. Tewolde Gebremariam CEO of the air carrier said Ethiopian also has plans to fly to the southern central port city and oil hub of Port Harcourt as well as Northern Nigeria’s largest city Kano, while increasing the number of flight trips to Nigeria’s capital city Abuja, Nigeria. “We want more flights to Abuja because now Abuja-Addis-Asia and Abuja-Addis-Dubai-Bangkok-China is the best flight option for Nigeria bound passengers,” said Tewolde adding that Ethiopian would be pleased to add flights to the country where it has been flying for more than 40 years. It currently has nearly 70 international destinations out of which 43 are in the African continent, while there are 17 domestic flights it operates. The national flag carrier has recently started flights to the Indian ocean island archipelago of Seychelles, Toronto in Canada, and Port Novo in Benin. It is also planning to start flights before the end of 2012 to Kuala Lampur, capital city of Malaysia, expected to start on October 31 and Brazil’s commercial hub Sao Paulo, its first Latin America route expected to be in December. As part of Vision 2025 Ethiopian plans to operate more than 120 airplanes flying to 90 plus destinations internationally carrying over 18 million passengers and 710,000 tons of cargo per annum while employing more than 17,000 people. Its 2025 vision’s overarching objective is to continue the scaling up of profitable and sustainable growth to enhance its profitability and technology to make its staff, customers and financiers secure. Ethiopian got its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner named “Africa first” delivered at Bole International Airport on August 17, 2012, making it the first African air carrier to receive the aircraft. The airline is expected to receive a total of five 787 Dreamliner aircraft before the end of 2012 and five more airplanes in 2014 http://www.capitalethiopia.com/index...news&Itemid=27 |

Cool thanks for the update much appreciated. BTW this terminal cost significantly less money than MM2 but it still looks good.

Grow up. It's not ''ugly''. Just a basic modern terminal. Not every project has to be expensive, flashy and 'wow'. Too many other priorities in Nigeria.

I think it looks good considering how much they spent on it which wasn't that much.
