Medicinal herbs found in Dharwad

Quote:
DHARWAD: Dharwad district lying in the northern part of Karnataka, forms a threshold to Western Ghats. The district has different types of vegetation such as moist and dry deciduous forests, scrubby jungles and grasslands. A study conducted by R Parimala of the department of Botany in JSS College in Dharwad has revealed that the district, a land of hillocks, is a land of valuable medicinal herbs too.

The nearly 30% of plants collected as part of the study possess medicinal properties. "Grass flora is very interesting, 123 wild grasses are collected. The interesting categories include hydrophytes, xerophytes, epiphytes, parasites, endemic species to southern peninsular India, threatened plants and exotic elements. Thirteen species form new additions to the flora of Karnataka. 470 species are newly recorded from the district which attributes to nearly 51%," said Parimala who has been awarded PhD for her work by the Karnatak University recently.

Boodanagudda and Jambulingeswara hill in Kalghatgi taluk host good number of medicinal plants. Some important medicinal species of the district are Indian Sarasaparilla, Ging, cat bean, Shatavari, Ashwagandha, Mountain Plum, Rauwolfia, Serpent root plant, Bacopa, belleric Myrobalan, Vaayu vilang, Madhunashini, Amruta balli etc., Parimala said.

Propagation of such species either through tissue culture or through macro-propagation techniques should be tried so as to conserve them, she said. Karnataka is known for its natural wealth. "The interesting topography and climate have resulted in heterogeneity of flora. But, anthropogenic activities have fragmented the forest wealth of the state. The plant wealth which is the rich resource for medicine, agriculture and industries, needs to be conserved for the next generation. The documentation of the floristic wealth of a district is an urgent need of the hour," she said.

Key space scientist quits job to start Sunday Science School

Quote:
Bangalore: A former senior space scientist is all set to start 'Sunday Science School' (SSS) in Karnataka to help children go beyond textbooks, create models and set up home laboratories.

Aimed at children in the 10-15 year age group, it would run up to 27 Sundays from July this year to February 2013.

The brain behind the project is Dr. Sujata Virdhe, Director of L Green Ventures, who previously worked with the Indian Space Research Organisation for 23 years in the field of satellite power systems, solar energy and indigenisation of electronic components.

To start with, SSS would be opened in Bangalore, Mysore, Dharwad, Hubli, Mangalore and Udupi.

"My heart always wanted to go back to basic sciences. I have taken voluntary retirement (from ISRO) to concentrate on my passion", Sujata, an applied physicist and PhD from Pune University, said.

At SSS, students are taught to make their own projects. At the end of the academic session, each student would have a display of the science models and also a small home laboratory.

In SSS, a range of activities are included to cover energy, solar car, weather magnetism, biology, chemistry, motors, aero-models and astronomy. "We arrange all the material for these workshops", she said.

Jignyasa 2012, Hubli

Agastya International Foundation and Deshpande Foundation jointly conducted Jignyasa, a 4-day, state-wide, model making competition. During the event, young students proudly exhibited solutions to several interesting and vital questions such as, how to evalutate pollution in the air, or assess the effect of gravity on roots, or ways to extract energy from the deep crevices of the earth. Over 26,000 students attended the fair.

Canadian body selects UAS-D to develop novel de-husking millet machine

Quote:
Thursday, February 02, 2012 08:00 IST
Our Bureau, Bangalore

The University of Agricultural Sciences-Dharwad (UAS-D) has received a grant of Rs 350 crore from the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF).

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) are other agencies roped in for the three-year project.

The CIFSRF and Canada's McGill University selected the UAS-D to anchor the project and have also roped in non-governmental organisations (NGOs) including the Chennai-based M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and the Dehradun-based Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO) in the project.

The collaboration will be utilised to develop de-husking equipment for minor millets. The machine would be rolled out for the use of the food processing industry.

The key objective of the CIFSRF has been strengthening of the regional staple food grains in India for extending food security at the village level. In this regard, major growing regions such as Haveri (jowar) in Karnataka, Namakal (ragi) in Tamil Nadu, Koraput (ragi) in Orissa, and Rudraprayag (barnyard millet and haraka) in Uttaranchal, have been chosen for the millet project, which will receive technical support from McGill University.

Dr Nirmala Yenagi, professor and head, department of food science and nutrition, UAS-D, said, “With the help of McGill University, we have designed de-husking equipment. Also, as part of the project, we are rolling out food processing units for value addition to millets at all the project sites.”

“Along with food processing units, efforts are being made to link production and marketing to enhance the entrepreneurial leadership of women, by forming self-help groups (SHGs),” she added.

The officials from the CIFSRF were here in Karnataka to review the progress of the project led by one of the funding partners, David Malone, president, IDRC.

A course to meet blooming needs

Quote:
HUBLI: As gardening and landscaping is gaining ground in big and small cities, a need is being felt for qualified and experienced garden designers and landscape architects. To meet the requirement, PC Jabin Science College in Hubli has started a certificate course in gardening and landscaping. The first batch began in January. Students who have passed II PU are eligible to enroll for the course.

The 100-hour course includes both theory and practical classes, held on weekends. Resource persons from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, and the department of horticulture will take classes for students.

On completion of the course, students will gain scientific knowledge and hands-on experience in planting saplings, ideal soil and temperature conditions for growing a plant, identifying medicinal and aromatic value of plants, plant propagation and how to design and develop a landscape in a garden.

Already 28 students have enrolled for the certificate course. Basavaraj Agadi, HoD Botany, told ToI that course in gardening and landscaping will enable students to woirk as garden supervisors, advisors and consultants in industries, organizations, educational institutions and the like.

Since gardening has caught the fancy of several households, kitchen gardening and terrace gardening are the in-thing.

This creates ample opportunities for professionals who can play a major role in designing and making the gardens.

Students Parvati and Suma, who have enrolled their names for the course, said, "Apart from employment opportunities, the course also helps us adopt scientific methods in home gardening."
