On the opening day itself the minister was concern about the plastic pollution and said they are baring the use in it, but in reality the situation is unknown.

Also the corporation again went into action against plastics where around 250 kgs have been seized in 2 days in samayapuram and srirangam temples alone!

The recently launched Hotel High Point, at the Manghalam Towers, wraps into a single package a hyper market, a food court and a multiplex, according to T.V. Anand, Proprietor, Manghalam Estates. While the Reliance hypermarket has been open for the past three years, the multiplex will be opened within a period of two months. The hotel is touted to be a designer hotel that offers a spread of 22 fully air-conditioned rooms, a coffee lounge and a banquet hall.

A much-awaited summer festival also known as 'Kodai Vizha' scheduled to be celebrated for the first time in Trichy in the newly created summer beach in Cauvery river was abandoned halfway as showers played spoilsport here in the evening on Saturday. However, it brought relief from the sizzling heat since morning. An hour later, the programme resumed after the rain in the presence of a small group of people.

At dusk on Saturday, as many as 2,000 people from in and around Trichy converged at the summer beach in Cauvery river with a festive mood to celebrate 'Chithra Pournami' (full moon day in the Tamil month of Chithirai) in the moonlight. The first event 'Mangala Isai' (holy music) that commenced at 6.45 pm received applause from spectators. In the meantime, there was a steady trickle of visitors who joined the festival. Unexpectedly, the sharp shower swept across the beach forcing all to leave the scene. The rain disappointed both the public and the district administration that made all the arrangements. School education minister N R Sivapathy, Trichy mayor A Jaya as well as the MLAs who were present were also not impressed. While many of them were trying to take shelter, some felt happy to be drenched in the summer rain. One of the spectators, Vanitha Kandasamy (29), from Ariyamangalam, Trichy, said "It was a great disappointment to us to leave the programme due to the rain as we have no place to enjoy the summer vacation. In the day time, we could not even think of coming out due to the heat. Anyhow, we enjoyed the sharp showers that usually comes on 'Chithra Pournami' every year."

An hour later, the programme resumed and the cultural events went on. However, the crowd disappeared and a small group of people enjoyed the programmes.

According to the weather forecast of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Chennai, the sky would be partly cloudy with the possibility of rain for the next two days. However, the temperature would remain at 40 Celsius maximum.

A large posse of police personnel were deployed to provide security to the public.

Sharp showers, accompanied by heavy winds and thunder, lashed the city and its suburbs for about an hour on Saturday evening. Many low-lying areas and roads were inundated leading to traffic congestion.

The sudden rain caught hundreds of people who had gathered at the ‘summer beach' on the Cauvery river bed for the inauguration of the summer festival by N. R. Sivapathi, Minister for School Education, unawares.

Shortly after the cultural programmes had commenced, it started raining. A majority of them got drenched as there was no shelter nearby.

With hundreds of visitors thronging the Cauvery bed for an evening hangout, the city police have ramped up security at the ‘summer beach'.

Police personnel deployed at the ‘summer beach' have been equipped with latest paraphernalia to aid in their bandobust duty.

Headed by a Sub Inspector of Police, the 15-member police team has been armed with megaphones, video cameras and search lights in addition to walkie-talkie sets.

The team would also be equipped with a night vision device soon. Police sources here say the gadgets had been provided to help them in their assigned task.

A few among the team members have been assigned with the specific job of keeping a watch on the movements of any anti-social elements with a view to preventing offences at the recreation spot which has attracted city residents ever since the dry river bed was thrown open to the public last month.

The nearly one kilometre stretch from the Garuda Mandapam bathing ghat to the Cauvery bridge has been turned into a temporary recreation spot through a joint effort by the Corporation and the Public Works Department by clearing the bushes and making provision for lighting facilities along the dry river bed and installing water tanks.

Police sources say a few men from the Armed Reserve Police have been drawn to be part of the police team for bandobust duty.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Srirangam range, and the Inspector of Srirangam police station carry out rounds periodically at the recreation spot.

Bandobust is provided from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Separate strength has been set aside for traffic regulation near Mambazha Salai in Srirangam, a senior police officer said adding that the team members kept changing every day.

The ‘summer beach' attracts an average turn out of about 3,000 persons every day, the officer said.

With the ‘summer beach' on the Cauvery bed turning out to be a big hit among city residents, the authorities have unveiled plans to organise yoga demonstrations and cultural programmes every evening.

“For the next 10 days, we will organise yoga demonstrations in the evenings on the river bed. We will also try and organise cultural programmes for the recreation of people visiting the spot,” said N.R.Sivapathi, Minister for School Education, Youth Welfare and Sports, speaking at the summer festival organised on the river bed here on Sunday.

The festival originally scheduled on the occasion of Chithira Pournami was interrupted by the heavy downpour on Saturday and was extended to Sunday.

The event turned out to be a huge draw this weekend, with hundreds of people thronging the river bed both on Saturday and Sunday, so much so that the new Cauvery bridge was choked with vehicles.

Encouraged by the public response, Mr.Sivapathi called upon people visiting the spot to shun plastics and ensure that the Cauvery river was not polluted on account of being thrown open for the public.

Mr.Sivapathi also announced that he was in talks with managements of schools and colleges in the city to throw open their grounds for morning walkers.

“We are requesting the institutions to open up their grounds between 5.30 and 7.15 in the mornings so that walkers in the respective areas could avoid walking on the roads,” the Minister said.

The abandoned Cauvery bridge, running parallel to the new bridge, would also be repaired and made fit for use by walkers.

Earlier, the big crowd was in for a visual and aural treat with ‘thappattam' presented by Selvam and troupe, a bharathanatyam performance by disciples of Revathi Muthuswamy and a vocal concert by Mahesh Kashyap and party.
