Yeah you're right, some people do hate being English. Not singing the anthem: who cares?! But booing anthems (English or other) is moronic behaviour.

Yer.
I'm not nationalistic in the slightest, but I'll follow England and want them to do well. I don't think we will until we totally change the way we play and I'm not a fervent fan, it won't effect my day if England go crashing out. |

i'm not sure what some of the posts here are implying. where has this stereotype come from that all English people sing/should sing the national anthem?
i don't sing the anthem either, i don't know anyone who does. not jokingly and not with serious passion. but i won't ruin the anthem out of malice. |

To be honest I didn't even notice any booing. The fact that some people may have boo'd has no effect on my life or anybody else's whatsoever. I don't understand why it bothers you.
Any chance to have a good old moan about them fackin scarsas: taken. |

I didn't mean to start such debate and wasn't having a dig at scousers, I had never heard the anthem get booed before and didn't know if there was a reason behind it. Still doesn't seem to be much of a reason, not a fan of Britain or the Royals so boo??
Fair enough, if you don't like it don't sing it. I'm indifferent to it and didn't sing.

It seems to be you who's playing the victim. You're upset because somebody boo'd the national anthem. It's not a big deal - you'll get through this.

And even if they do, Johnny is simply pointing out that there is a difference between not singing the national anthem and booing it. Nothing wrong with not singing if you don't want to. But booing is just seriously small time. |

Quite apart from the UK and Commonwealth countries, there are another 20 or so constitutional monarchies around the world. As to the north / south thing..............a can of worms, fella. Not one you want to be opening on this forum. Go to the Sky Bar and discuss it if you must. |

Totally agree with chris.
You can't have real democracy with a monarch at the helm, even if they are largely symbolic they are still being elevated beyond everyone else simply because of their blood. Same goes for the rest of the aristocracy, time to abolish this archaic bullshit, how the hell can we be 'all in it together'. |

We all know what we mean by true democracy - just as we all know what we mean by a perfect circle - but it has never existed. Nor will it. Likewise the perfect circle. So really, all that should matter to us are the practicalities of the matter. Do the people of the UK have a regular, free and fair vote to determine how and by whom they are governed? Yes. Does the monarch have any power that she or he could ever exercise if it ran counter to the will of the people? No. Well, then. We have a democracy as good as you're likely to get anywhere. Anyway, enough of this since it, too, belongs in the Sky Bar and not here. |

Was that really necessary?
Hate the institution of monarchy, if you like. But show a bit of respect to an octogenarian who was thrust into the role and who has devoted virtually her entire life to the service of the UK and Commonwealth. She didn't ask to be Queen. It is a burden as much as - or even more than - it is a privilege. Hardly a moment to herself. Her family forever the subject of national and international scrutiny. But she has never complained and hardly ever put a foot wrong. Quite remarkable. If only our politicians could be so reliable. |
