Skimpy clothes a no-no in Hampi

"The new rule is to create a more positive image of the temple and maintain the sanctity of the place. In addition to being a tourist destination, the temple is also a place of worship," a senior endowment department official in Bangalore said.

Some locals were recently outraged after some foreigners, out of ignorance, went to the sanctum sanctorum wearing garlands. "They'd place the garlands before the deity and that angered local worshippers," said Vinayak Pandit , a senior priest at the temple. Locals also objected to tourists going near the sanctum sanctorum wearing short skirts, shorts and skimpy dresses.

There were initial hiccups, but now the code seems to be working. The temple placed boards at the entrance of the temple which read --' From this point, shorts skirts and bare shoulders are not allowed'.

The guards drew aside men in shorts and women with uncovered shoulders and short skirts and told them they were not dressed appropriately. Some women were obliged to buy shawls and scarves from nearby hawkers, while men bought trousers.

When foreign tourist traffic dwindled, the temple office decided to give a white shawl which they could drape before going in. `We're not against foreigners, but their dress and conduct in the temple is highly objectionable and therefore the management decided to impose restrictions," said Vignesh Jaiteerth, a member of temple committee. "Foreigners are cordial and don't argue. But we always have problems with domestic tourists," he added.

Most tourists were taken aback by the rule. "In spirit, it's a good rule but it may a wrong message to tourists," said Venkatesh Murthy, a trader at Hampi Bazaar. He said when the temple management informed the tourism department about the code, the department didn't raise any objection.

"This will not impact tourist flow. In fact, there are dress codes at religious places in India and abroad. We cannot violate the sanctity of temples in the name of tourism," said V N Krishna, tourism executive of the Karnataka tourism department.

Display of latest denim products impress visitors

For the first time in recent past, a wide range of denim products of Arvind Mills was on display here on Sunday.

Bellary is well-known in the country as a major producer of jeans trousers, which are popularly known as Bellary Jeans. There are about 250 registered firms engaged in jeans garment production in Bellary alone.

The objective behind organising the exhibition is to provide an exposure to the manufacturers of jeans trousers, the new products launched by Arvind Mills and providing an opportunity to manufacturers to gain trade knowledge about market trends, designs, washing technology and the like, said Sankalchand Kawad of Lokseva Dresses, a leading distributor of Arvind Mills denims.

A variety of sample trousers, stitched using the Arvind denim, which included the latest ones — Dynamo and Universal — were on display.

“We come to know about the new denim products, the latest fashion trends and so on by visiting these shows and can also plan new designs, keeping in view the market trends,” Mallikarjun, a leading manufacturer of Jeans legwear told The Hindu . A majority of manufacturers were happy that the company had given a lot of importance to Bellary as a major producer of legwear by organising the show, which is usually held in major centres like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore.

Manish Juneja, Chief Manager (Marketing), Arvind Mills, expressed his happiness over the good response to the show, when over 200 people comprising manufacturers, cutting masters and those running washing units went round the exhibition.

Later, B. Munir of product development section of Arvind Mills gave a power point presentation of washing techniques. Dilip Patel of Arvind Mills, and Dinesh Kawad, distributor, were present.

BANGALORE: The State High Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC), which met on Wednesday, approved 31 projects with an investment proposal of Rs 1.46 lakh crore. Around 3.03 lakh people would get employment opportunities through these proposals. The major investment proposals that are approved in the 28th meeting of SHLCC include: a cement factory at Chittapur in Gulbarga by JK Cements worth of Rs 2326.65 crore, a three MTPA gas-based integrated steel plant by BMM Ispat Limited at Dhanapur village in Bellary worth Rs 16229.68 crore, a 5 MW solar thermal power plant by Atria Power in 75 taluks worth Rs 4,905 crore, a Rs 12,000 crore steel manufacturing unit by Kalyani Steels in Yadgir and a 3.5 MTPA steel plant in Chincholi taluka in Gulbarga district by Shivashankar Minerals.

Bangalore, June 7:

JSW Steel expects its Vijayanagar steel plant to reach 100 per cent capacity once the iron ore supply resumes in Karnataka.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Global Investors' Meet here, Mr Sajjan Jindal, Chairman, JSW Steel, said that the steel plant, located in Thorangal in Bellary district of Karnataka, was currently running at 80-85 per cent capacity. “We expect to reach 100 per cent capacity in 2-3 months,” he added. JSW Steel's Vijayanagar plant has a steel production capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum. The company has so far invested over Rs 25,000 crore in the plant. The Central Empowered Committee, constituted by the Supreme Court, is expected to come out with a reclamation and rehabilitation plan soon.

JSW Steel signed an MoU with the Karnataka Government to set up an iron ore benefication and cement plants in the State at an investment of over Rs 6,090 crore.

Cities all set for urban property owner cards

MANGALORE: Bangalore's tryst with the Urban Property Ownership Records (UPOR) project that will see property record card issued to property owners instead of 'khata' is three months away.
The state cabinet has cleared the project for the state capital. The department of the survey settlement and land records has already taken up the project on a pilot basis in Mangalore ,Bellary,Mysore,Hubli - Dharwad and Shimoga on PPP model.
While the survey process of 2.75 lakh properties in Mysore is over,it is progressing in Shimoga with nearly 70,000 properties surveyed. In Hubli-Dharwad, survey of 25% of urban properties has been completed. Karnataka has 2.75 crore properties, including 75 lakh in rural areas. Bangalore alone accounts for 18 lakh of these 2-crore odd properties spread over 198 city corporation wards.KV Rudresh, joint director of the department, told STOI that as perplans drawn up for the project in Bangalore, survey of 50 out of198 wards will be taken up in the first phase and the work has been entrusted to two agencies. The survey work for remaining wards will be taken up in the subsequent phase, Rudresh saidand added that the modalities ofappointing agencies under the PPP model would be decided at the highest level.
V Ponnuraj, commissioner of theland records department, said the decision of the state cabinet will come up before the empowered committee headed by the chief secretary.
"We will call tenders to decide onthe agency to take up the process for Bangalore," Ponnuraj said, adding that Karnataka could well become the first state in the country where property cards will replace khataas the legally recognized property document for urban areas.

The Traffic Police have on Monday introduced BlackBerry devices here to book motorists for traffic offences.

The handheld devices are given to personnel of the rank of Assistant Sub-Inspectors. The device will not only facilitate paperless enforcement of traffic rules but also enables senior officers to monitor the way subordinate officials discharge their duties, including collection of fines.

14 devices received

Sources told The Hindu that 14 devices had been received in the district and distributed among the traffic police stations in Bellary, Hospet and Hampi.

Forty micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will be established in Bellary district with an investment of over Rs. 322 crore.

“Entrepreneurs have signed memorandums of understanding with the District Industries Centre (DIC) here as part of the Global Investors Meet 2012, and we are confident that all these units will be set up in the near future,” V.N. Veerabhadrappa, joint director of the DIC, told The Hindu .

Of the 40 units, 21 projects with a total investment of Rs. 21 crore and 19 units with a total investment of Rs. 302.57 crore would be coming up in the district, Mr. Veerabhadrappa said.

Around five organisations had come forward to set up agro and food processing units with an investment of Rs. 143.45 crore and jobs for about 655 people, and another five related to engineering and allied products, providing employment to 325 people.

Eight textile and readymade garment units would be set up with a total investment of Rs. 28.77 crore. They would employ 582 people. Two chemical/pharmaceutical units with a total investment of Rs. 8 crore providing employment to around 100 people would also come up, he said.

One unit was coming up under the hotel and hospitality sector with an investment of Rs. 15 crore and it would employ 100 people, he said.

Three units under mineral and mineral-based industries would be set up with a total investment of Rs. 12.5 crore and jobs for 290 persons.

Similarly, three units under paper and allied products, with a total investment of Rs. 17.5 crore and employing 140 people would come up. In addition, one unit with an investment of Rs. 8 crore employing 50 personnel would come up in the infrastructure sector.

Under other sectors, 13 units with a total investment of Rs. 77.06 crore, employing 5,405 people, would come up in the district, Mr. Veerabhadrappa said.

“We are confident that almost all the 40 units will be operational in the near future because, land, which is the most essential factor, is already in the possession of 14 entrepreneurs and the process of converting it for non-agricultural purposes needs to be done through the single-window system. The remaining 26 entrepreneurs have sought land from the Vijayanagar Area Development Authority (VADA) and the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board. Allotment of land to these entrepreneurs will not be a problem as VADA has earmarked four places with 500 acres of land for micro, small and medium enterprises,” he said.

Bellary got huge investment of 1.5 lakh crore last session of GIM (2011) but the villagers and anti govt people opposed the idea of giving land so the project haven't commenced yet and who knows the investors will change their mind and cancel the investments allotted in Bellary district ,so that projects are not getting well to start who knows small units too face problem .?
