I think Maha Nakhon fits the bill. Hopefully it will go to completion.

Better wait for the render of Royal River Place and Central Lumpini.

What BKK is seriously lacking is (much) better mid- and lowrise architecture. The aesthetic and qualitative gap between the tall buildings and the other 99,999...% small buildings is enormous. The seemingly widespread indifference regarding proper maintenance of building exteriors doesn't make it better. I love how Vietnamese cities are rapidly improving their looks by giving more attention and care to the small buildings. Why not do the same in Thailand? Having a great skyline and icons like the coming Mahanakhon tower is nice, but let's not forget the rest of the city (which really is more important).

I would have to agree with you George....their is a distinct lack of vernacular architecture in BKK and other Thai cities...which is a shame really as it would look stunning juxtaposed next to some high rise + enhance the Thai identity....

Its actually called Grand River Place. All the news starts from here in this page Grand River Place. Read all the news from this page on to get an idea of how grand this project is and for the details.

A summary of the project.

Quote:
Physical/emotional landmark

"We want to create a physical and an emotional landmark; not just another building or commercial venture, but something that can further enhance Bangkok's stature in the region and the world; something that will become a new attraction in the city for both local and international visitors. That's because we have seen that iconic landmarks on a city's main river can move that city forward - whether in Paris, London, Shanghai or Sydney," she said.

"This project can help Bangkok capture a historic opportunity - one that will make it a top regional hub for tourism and business, increasing the flow of people and businesses into Thailand and helping to propel our economy upwards."
