Here's a photo I snapped of one of the food courts (after security) last July 2011. Looked pretty nice, but I wasn't hungry at the time...

Terminal 3 should be designed to WOW the world like when they built the Taipei 101 to be the tallest building in the world in 2004. Lets make it to Build it bigger (discovery channel) !!!

kris yao? umm...no, i dont think so. enough local architects. taiwan needs the big international guns with the big ideas, e.g., cesar pelli, som, antonio calatravas, etc., if they want to put the airport on the global map. |

Kris Yao will definitely in list of design group. Reason? Because Government own international design competition requires every international design team has to collaborate with local architects.
And Department of Transporation have said it there is going to be international design competition for terminal 3. |

that's fine as long as the international architecture firm is the project lead and main company designing the terminal. |

the department always say its an international competition but local architects end up getting the project. The Taiwanese government is way too protective towards local firms. Taiwan will loose its competitive edge if it keeps doing that. Look at the recent Korea-China-Japan Free Trade talks.. Where is Taiwan? South Korea- Japan FTA. Where is Taiwan? Taiwan blocks a lot of foreign investments, why will countries want to enter trade talks with us if we are blocking everything? Taiwan is in seriously need of Economic Transformation.

FTA with Taiwan is difficult due to its political handicap.

They don't need to formally call it FTA. Zero Tariff on import and export will be good enough. There's always a way around it

Taiwan benefits from exporting a lot of the stuff exporting to US, its just not enough. USA is not scared of what China will say if they really want to sign a FTA with Taiwan. They are not scared of China. The problem with the US is still stuck on the beef issue. No beef no trade talks is USA's attitude right now

taiwan also has strict restrictions on foreign labor especially white collar professionals in fields like business/financial, academic, science/hi-tech, architecture, etc. something that taiwan desperately needs. govt. doesnt offer high salaries to attract foreign teachers and academic leaders to taiwan the way singapore, hong kong and now china does. private industry and govt also doesnt do enough to offer competitive salaries and good working/living conditions to attract educated foreign workers. everyone goes to singapore, hk, japan, even south korea and especially china now. taiwan is an isolated little island that likes to isolate itself from the world.

taiwan is strong in IT. but it still does not compare with south korea and japan in terms of developing cutting edge innovative technology and building globally branded corporations. most of taiwan's IT companies are small unknown oem companies producing products for other international companies. taiwan has fallen way behind s. korea in DRAM and lcd/led flat panel industries. acer has now fallen to #4 or #5 biggest computer company in the world and htc is ranked even lower and got thoroughly pummeled by apple and samsung. technology changes so fast these days and i dont really see taiwan significantly leading in anything. you slack off the least bit and the competition will kill you. and taiwan is very weak in r&d and marketing and needs to learn from professionals in other countries how to market her products and companies and also make big investments in future technology. taiwan is just struggling to keep up. so no, it's not unfounded pessimism. .
