Kentucky Fried Chicken to open its first outlet in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: International food chain brand Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is set to open its store at Pulimoodu in the city by the end of this month.

"The 4,500 sq ft, 110-seater outlet will be located on the ground floor of the QRS building. The building has two levels of parking that can accommodate 70 cars," said Abhimanyu Ganesh, director of QRS Retail Ltd, KFC. The food chain is currently setting up a bio-gas plant in a leased land behind QRS Square.

"This will be KFC's fourth outlet in Kerala. Nationally, KFC has more than 160 outlets. The food chain is aiming at opening 500 outlets by 2015. The menu will have a balanced fare of international and India-specific products," said an official spokesperson for the brand.

"We are apprehensive about security because of its proximity to the Secretariat, but Yum Restaurants India Pvt Ltd, (owners of KFC India) wanted the outlet to be located in a central area, as it is their flagship store in the state capital," said Ganesh.

IIST students’ rocket to blast off

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If things pan out, ‘Vyom,’ the sounding rocket built by students of ISRO’s Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Valiyamala, is likely to lift off from Thumba this week.

Technical snags in the motor had led to the postponement of the original schedule in February 2012. The launch is scheduled for 6.30 pm on Friday, IIST officials said.‘Vyom’ has the distinction of being the first sounding rocket built by the student community in the country. However, IIST director Dr K S Dasgupta said the launch date is yet to be finalised.
Though ISRO has launched hundreds of sounding rockets from Thumba, ‘Vyom’ is also special in that it has been developed by the youngest team. The first batch of IIST students started off on the project in 2007, a few months after the institute was inaugurated at a temporary campus at Veli. Successive batches had carried on with the project.
The students were made to approach the project in a professional manner by forming separate teams for propulsion, aerodynamics, trajectory, structure and manufacturing. As payload, the sounding rocket will have a tri-axis accelerometer which will measure the acceleration rate of the rocket.
Standing 2.31 metres tall, the single-stage rocket weighs 89 kg, and will zip 14 kilometres skywards before falling into the Arabian Sea. According to IIST officials, it will take 44 seconds to reach maximum altitude and will be in air for 116 seconds.

Thiruvananthapuram to discuss Putin on Monday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vladimir Putin’s return to presidency in Russia will be the subject of a discussion here on Monday. The second-time president taking oath of office will be viewed live on the TV channel ‘Russia Today’ at the discussion.

Putin will assume office at 12 noon Moscow time (1.30 pm, Indian time). The discussion will be held simultaneously here, said Ratheesh C Nair, Russia’s Honorary Consul.
The panel of political observers and senior journalists from the city will discuss Putin’s contributions during his first term, the implications for India as Putin - who was Prime Minister up to the elections in March - becomes president a second time, areas where Putin is likely to focus vis a vis development and the future of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) forum in the light of his return.
It may be remembered that the Honorary Russian Consulate had set up a polling booth, for the first time, in Thiruvananthapuram for Russian citizens to cast their franchise during the Russian presidential elections in March.

Kerala was bound to get bigger given the State’s “strategic vicinity”

Chief of the Army Staff General V. K. Singh on Tuesday said the defence establishment’s “foot-print” in Kerala was bound to get bigger given the State’s “strategic vicinity” to the nation’s island territories and international sea-routes.

Interacting with mediapersons on his maiden visit to the military station here, the General said already five major public sector units, all having a bearing on the country’s defence production, were in Kerala.
The Army’s deployment and infrastructure build up in Kerala, including the positioning of its amphibious combat battalions, would depend on “our” immediate and future threat perceptions.

Replying to a question on the controversy regarding his age, the General said it could have been immensely avoided. When asked who could have avoided the row, the General replied “by everybody”.
He visited the landmark Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple early on Tuesday. Lt. Gen. A. K. Singh, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Command, was among those present.

‘Discover Japan Festival’ in city from Friday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of the 60th year of India-Japan diplomatic relations, ‘Discover Japan Festival-2012’, a three-day cultural festival and industrial expo, will begin in th city on Friday. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the festival, jointly organised by Japanese Cultural and Information Centre, Alumni Society of AOTS and Terumo Penpol, at 5 pm on Friday at VJT Hall.
Chief Secretary K Jayakumar will preside over the function. Masanori Nakano, Consul General of Japan, Chennai, will deliver the keynote address.
Various organisations doing business with Japan will participate and exhibit their products and services. Cultural programmes, Origami Art Show, exhibition of Japanese dolls, handicrafts, Bonsai exhibitions, Ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangement) competition, Japanese food festival, performance of traditional Karate Do Kobudo and Japanese film festival are the major highlights of the festival.
The Japanese film show will be held at 7 am on Friday. Women will be given training in traditional Karate Do Kobudo technique from 10 am to 12 noon on Saturday. Japanese food festival will be held between 4 pm to 8 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Why not, soon Trivandrum will have a deep water port that can easily accommodate large amphibious assault ships, not to mention large aircraft carriers.

Proximity to Male,Colombo,Seychelles,Diego Garcia,Chinese presence in Sri Lankan Port,Chagos Islands and international shipping canal makes Trivandrum as strategic as Siachen in the North. This was evident by the role of city in the Sri Lankan Civil War and Maldives Counter Coup Operations (Operation Cactus) by the Indian Defence Forces.This location coupled with the Natural Deep Water Port makes this southern most city most strategic in the Indian Penninsula.

Just an amphibious operation team wouldn't suffice.Indian Defence Forces will in near future look at this city with much higher importance.

Nowadays am not that much cheered while hearing these sort of news, anyways its really a god thing for our city. The recent flow of multinational restaurent chains themselves proves that TVM became a hotspot to spread their wings over it. These restraurent chains like KFC, McD, Subway, Dominos queuing up for opening their stores and their expansion plans in Trivandrum is no way a wonder to us, like what we experienced in terms of IT development. Am sure this process will continue without any ads and hypes.
