Ever since then my family has been moving up the socio-economic ladder. From Nazimabad we moved to PECHS and then to Bath Island. Nowadays I don't have a house in Karachi but my brother does and when I'm in the city I stay in DHA. But, alhamdulillah, I've moved even beyond DHA to Toronto . My nani used to live in PIB Colony and I have lots of great memories of her house there and roaming the streets of PIB Colony.

I remember the time when there were no bridges over the Lyari river. The road used to go down to the river bed and then up the other side. When it rained the roads were cut off. People in the area were stark poor and mostly lived in juggis and got washed away every rainy season.

I also remember when Hasan Square didn't exist. That intersection was the end of the city and beyond that there was nothing but desert.

As far as flyovers are concerned, it depends on the definition of a flyover. In my opinion a flyover is a bridge over an existing road. NOT a bridge over a river or a railway line. By that definition I don't believe Karachi had any flyovers until Musharraf's time. All the old bridges are just bridges - puls. So the first flyover would have been built sometime after 2000.

What I know about Karachi flyovers is:
Nazimabad Flyover was the first flyover in the city. Then, the Baloch Colony one. I do not know the years during which they were completed.
Then the drighroad flyover was made (took 3 years to complete), 1996 - completed in 1999. I do not know exactly when Jinnah bridge flyover was made.
Then the 3, Shah Faisal, Nursery and FTC flyovers were made between 2000-2005.
Then a countless number of flyovers were made between 2005-2009.
Between 2010-2012, a couple of more flyovers were completed.

Yes, forgot three flyovers.

NIPA flyover, built in 95-97. Liaquatabad flyover, build over a very longer period of time. And Sir Syed University flyover, I think, was build somewhere between 1999 -2002.

Liaquatabad was a joke. So they made a smaller flyover, then I think just a month or so later they demolished it and made that longer one. Someone had too much money.

All these flyovers you're talking about that were built in the 90s - are they going over roads or railway tracks?

I don't remember any flyovers going over other roads in the 90s. Nazimabad and Liaquatabad had bridges (puls) over railway tracks or the Lyari River. So what definition are you using for flyovers?

But then I haven't lived in Karachi since 1979 so I may have missed them.

Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Nipa, Drighroad, Baloch Colony flyovers are flyovers crossing over main roads, and built before 2000.

There is a new project near Boat Basin. The project board says 'Tower' so it must be atleast 80-90m high. I forgot the project name. It's across the road from Kfc. There is a hole big enough for a mid-rise there.

Clifton has very relaxed laws about converting residential properties to commercial. That's why a lot of houses in Clifton are used as offices and many others are torn down to build high-rises. In a few years Clifton will mostly consist of shops, offices and apartments. Single family homes will mostly be gone.

Lilly is an odd name for a new bridge.

Indeed. Infact, there are many projects all over Karachi. Another addition is the Euro group they have several decent residential projects in Nazimabad and N. Nazimabad area.
