Now let give some space to the third level of the city: beside the sea level and the hills level of the Vesuvius, there is an underground level that sometimes is as spectacular as the ground level: the catacombs, dating back to the third millennium before Christ, the ancient greek city is now buried and represents and underground city too, and there is also...an underground lake!

San Domenico Maggiore complex
After many years of manteinance, this important monastic complex opens to the public. Here there was the ancient site of the University of Naples. There studied Petrarca in his neapolitan period, Giordano Bruno, Gianbattista Vico, San Tommaso d'Aquino. ![]() ![]()

Great works of restorations!!!! Thank you Yuri for those amazing pictures!
![]() With all those restorations ongoing and the Lungomare seaside avenue closed to the traffic, the difference in terms of the image of the city will not be late in being evident also in touristic sector (I mean, in the unqualified and generalized mass tourism, since Naples has always be by far a must see city for the experts or those who studies or appreciate art and culture, but unluckily those are just a minority)

San Domenico Maggiore monastic complex.
Great environments, as wished by the prior Ruffo di Bagnara. This map shows the greatness of the complex image hosted on flickr ![]() A sculpture in the courtyard image hosted on flickr ![]() Entrance stair image hosted on flickr ![]() In the dining hall I was astonished by the frescos those, ideally, continue the perspective of the big room. ![]() This is a fresco of the last dinner of Jesus Christ. The guide explained me that this is the result of three phases of painting in the time. The first phase is the main scene and the two groups of columns; the second one is the crucifixion in the bottom; the last one is in the low left corner, where a part of the painting was lost and repainted. Here you are the adding. image hosted on flickr ![]() The opposite wall is painted with the most important moment in the life of San Tommaso: the dialogue with the cross. image hosted on flickr ![]() Some ancient elements located in the wall. image hosted on flickr ![]() Chapter room, the most beautiful one in the convent. ![]() Here is showed the chapter of the passion of Christ. ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() ![]() ![]() The cells of the dominican monks image hosted on flickr ![]() The most suggestive room is the cell of San Tommaso. image hosted on flickr ![]() The crux that talked with San Tommaso image hosted on flickr ![]() San Tommaso's leg bone image hosted on flickr ![]() Roof of the chapel containing the cell image hosted on flickr
