Great and appreciable architectural endeavour in progress in Potsdam, I'm longing for getting back there in a couple of years and see with my very eyes all these urban renovations.

A couple of pics of one of the newer buildings. Decent addition imo.

Agree. They just forgot to change the palace roof to green instead of gray!

It's about time that they'll throw away that outdated Bauhaus ideology and that WWII self hatred. We've the right again, to live in beautiful cities! Though it's still a long way go...

Stunning! I'm just floored, what great projects, I cant wait to get back to Potsdam and check out the new developments, nice work!!!!

I'm really impressed with the focus on rebuilding the historical buildings without trying to integrate modern styles like Berlin is so fond of. Very very impressed with Potsdam - einfachklasse!

Love all the restoration work going on in Potsdam, maybe one day it will again be a very beautiful city. The photo above showing a corner of a crumbling 60's heap of shit opposite the new Palace construction site speaks volumes about the TOTAL FAILURE of the modernist movement since WW2

Of course you are absolutely right. I wonder if the Russians would consider demolishing St.Basil's in Red Square, after all it was built by Ivan 1V ("The Terrible" in English translation) one of the most brutal men of the 16th c. These arguments for not rebuilding are totally vacuous.

Thanks for the updates Kamp!

I think many of those 'heaps' were build out of necessity after the destruction of the war. The good thing is that they are poorly built with relatively little attachment so as reconstruction and economics progress these will slowly be replaced by, hopefully, historically accurate reconstructions (opposed to something more modernist)

Im still so impressed by what Potsdam is doing - I'm amazed as it sat still for so many years compared to construction going on in Berlin.

Potsdam didn't quite "sat still". It's just that it only suffered from rather minor war damage and demolitions as opposed to Berlin. So the city could focus more on high quality renovations and "minor" reconstructions (such as the Militärwaisenhaus).

Sure, much of Potsdam's Prussian baroque old town core is still gone. But many areas are still there, such as the Dutch Quarter, the area around Brandenburger Strasse, the Russian Quarter (Kolonie Alexandrowka), all the castles (except Stadtschloss being rebuilt now), Babelsberg, Heiliger See, etc.pp.

Looking very impressive in Germany.

Wish we had the same vision and conviction in England to improve many of our towns and cities.

Believe me, there are still plenty of towns that don't give a flying fück about their heritage here in Germany as well.

I know, I've seen some of the shocking things done in German towns, even after the war, but something is always better than nothing; as far as I know, there are no similar plans in any major cities here to do anything on a similar scale.
