Liverpool was more important than London, as it was bringing more money. Liverpool was the only city ever to have it own government office in Whitehall, it was so important. The biggest single contributor to the treasury was the Liverpool Custom House.
"...if Liverpool can get into top gear again there is no limit to the city's potential. The scale and resilience of the buildings and people (of Liverpool) is amazing - it is a world city, far more so than London or Manchester. It doesn’t feel like anywhere else in Lancashire: comparisons always end up overseas - Dublin, or Boston, or Hamburg. The city is tremendous, and so, right up to the First World War, were the abilities of the architects who built over it – the less said about the last forty years the better…… The centre is humane and convenient to walk around in, but never loses its scale. And, in spite of the bombings and the carelessness, it is still full of superb buildings. Fifty years ago it must have outdone anything in England."

– Ian Nairn, Britain's Changing Towns, 1967

Even in WW2 Liverpool was more important. The city was a strategic target, London was a political target. Hitting Liverpool slowed the war effort. Hitting London just killed civilians.

You also need good links to other world cities- the primary one of course being London.
Yes, ensuring the international airports were there.

At 62 million in Britain, London is not over 20 million. The city alone is about 6 million.

This is utterly incorrect.

What is it with Liverpool that breeds such Balkanesque blind nationalism?
You see a lot of civic bride in other cities but never to such illogical extremes.

Laugh all you like, its true, its the way things work. Things had to have started somewhere of course, it wasnt always that way, but these days its quite a closed loop that keeps London on top.

London is a lot more than 6 million. Official Greater London is closer to 8 million, including the surrounding areas which are pretty much part of London and work as part of its economy by and large you're looking at well over 10 million.

The 'South East' is however. That 8 million figure doesn't include places like Guildford or Woking or Reading etc. Soon adds up.

Ah but, whilst I will give you Cheshire, the Lake District is not part of an interconnected Urban Region.

And to go full circle that interconnected urban region is more Manchester focussed than Liverpool

Just decloaking for a minute or two to call Merseyrail a fool.

kthanksbye.

No...I can't just do this, that is merely trolling.

The lakes in the Lake District, many of them provide water for Manchester, hence they're more connected to Manchester than Liverpool. Now crawl back under your stone and cry about how much shitter than Manchester your airport is.
