The people responsible for the poor governance of the various arts organisations implicated in this mess have as much to answer for as the politicians...

Baltic 39

Two hard hitting letters.

Too much has been spent on this one facility and the likelyhood is this will be sucking from the public purse in the future.

I think the gallery should work towards becoming self funding.

We need an enquiry into where the money has gone and why it has cost so much but not much hope of that!

Baltic 39 could be a catalyst for improvements in High Bridge though.

Edit: The usual Thompson House sub-editing on that article I notice:

assuming there's some explanation inside the gallery? It's their name/branding, and is meant to be viewed from inside...

WH?

bigchrisfgb - yes you are on the right lines although it is intended to be less fun.

paddytoonleics - Yes it is intended to be viewed from the gallery. I do love the idea that there could be explanatory notes within the gallery for visitors looking out onto this but alas I think it is rather unlikely. You are correct that the W is the logo of the previous operators.

The WH? was intended to be an abbreviation for awhole list of ongoing unanswered governance questions of the publically funded gallery. It is intended to raise issues relating to the Who and Why was really in control, as well as the What, When and Where etc happened to all the money. I believe there is a whole list of things that are being swept under the carpet to ensure that the same small privileged networks stay in control of the cultural infrastructure to safe guard their own interests.

I had to smile!
During today's official opening of the fine new Toffee Factory, attended by the Leader of the Council, Chief Exec of (the former) One Noth East and others from the Public and Private sectors, this was highly visible:-

Was the graffiti visible from the Toffee Factory roof terrace though the tree?

The Toffee Factory, as a physical building, is indeed fine....
However one does have to be concerned that so much influence is being wielded over the building
by so many of the same self-serving small networks that operated in and around Waygood.

Baltic 39

Visited the gallery a little while ago on a Wednesday.

Had been on a Tuesday the previous week but itwas shut!
Pulled at the door which opened but there were still three staff there having a chat.

Anyway, on my Wed visit I pushed at the 'door open' button and the auto doors opened.
This is one gripe in that the doors are black and you can't se in, there are no signs saying 'open' so it looks shut.
Wonder how many othe people would thinkthe same.

Anyway, I wandered in and went up to the one exhibition floor, four floors up.

The exhibition is called SWITCH and runs from 6 April to 24 June.

There are twelve exhibits.

On one hand you might say what exactly is going on here?
All are 'installations' so difficult for the casual art goer (me) to comprehend.

On the other hand you might as well just have a laugh at the sheer amateur/childlike exhibits.

Who buys this stuff?

My visit lasted half an hour and I was the only one in the public gallery.

I really do hope it is a success but would love to see the visitor numbers since its opening.

Trickle down

image hosted on flickr

The clothing shop, Trickle, which was in part of the redeveloped Baltic 39 building on High Bridge closed down at the weekend...

www.facebook.com/trickleclothing

Trickle does continue to operate as a company online but presumably they couldn't afford the High Bridge rent.
