Indeed the section close to the pavilion looks like they could start with the pavers there (except for the area that is still waiting for a pour). The crane is for laying out rebar on the future Greenwich Street though..
There is also some activity on the roof.. |

So I guess only the Christian victims of 9/11 matter.

That steel cross represented hope at a time when it was needed most.
The symbolic significance it holds from September 11th can't be denied, regardless of what religion it represents as an object. Sincerely, An Atheist.

This isn't about the fact that it's a cross. This is about the fact that it is a relic of the World Trade Center collapsing, and this is about how much it meant to people after the collapse. Don't throw your ignorant atheist ultra-liberal opinion in where it isn't wanted. This is one exhibit in a huge museum, no one will die with christianity being cast upon them. When they start handing out pamphlets for churches, and they start baptizing people in the fountains every Sunday, then you can complain. |

I asked this very question today and was told not to expect the last section to open for a long time yet. I would align that with the museum opening next Summer rather than this year...

W.T.C. sphere vetoed for 9/11 Memorial Plaza
"BY ALINE REYNOLDS | Though officials have yet to announce the new home for the Fritz Koenig sphere sculpture, one thing’s fairly certain: It’s not going back to where it once stood at the World Trade Center site. That’s what National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum President Joe Daniels conveyed to members of Community Board 1 at the board’s World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee meeting on May 14. The reason behind this? The sphere, which was moved from Ground Zero to Battery Park after surviving the Sept. 11 attacks, was never part of architect Michael Arad’s design of the 9/11 Memorial. It once stood in Austin J. Tobin Plaza, a portion of which was situated on what is now the 9/11 Memorial Plaza. “We fully, 100 percent support the sphere being kept outside in a way the public can experience whenever they want to, but it’s not going to be incorporated in the eight-acre Memorial Plaza,” said Daniels. The sphere, reportedly the last remaining intact artifact of the former W.T.C., was supposed to be hauled away to Hangar 17 at John F. Kennedy Airport by April 30, according to the Battery Conservancy..." |

Are they referring to placing the sphere in the actual Memorial Plaza? What about the park under construction next to the memorial?

I personally have no problem with it being placed in the park next to the memorial, because the memorial design looks perfect as it is imo. It'd also be nice to look at the sphere with a full view of the memorial and the skyscrapers to the North, from the new park.

Memorial Shares Construction and Cultural Updates
"It has welcomed more than 2.5 million visitors since its September 2011 opening, but construction progress at the National 9/11 Memorial at the World Trade Center remains slow during the past several months due to ongoing funding negotiations with the Port Authority. However, while thousands of visitors head to the open-air plaza daily, officials continue planning the exact stages of full completion for the Memorial, as well as its underground Museum and entrance pavilion. Community Board 1 (CB1) heard the latest update this week, as presented by Joe Daniels, Memorial president and CEO. Daniels explained that his team is working with the future WTC Performing Arts Center, which recently welcomed Maggie Boepple as its boards senior adviser. Calling the WTC Memorial and Museum and the PAC "parallel cultural institutions," Daniels noted that the latters newly formed board has hosted two meetings, and is now setting up its governing structure and other development details..." "...The Memorial team also continues to plan for educational programming at the future Museum, as well as for how the commemoration events on September 11, 2012 will go. New renderings of the interior spaces also have been added to the Memorial website, including the "We Remember" exhibit that will be located at the sites entry ramp..." A few of the new renders. ![]() ![]()
