United fan myself but one of those that would be happy for City finish second as long as we finish first. City doing well also is good for the whole area and all that..... rather than being a tribalistic moron. I love Manchester first and foremost.
Anyway.

Point 1. The whole Abu Dhabi investment/regeneration has to be good for East Manchester. Even the most tribal United fan has to get that.

Point 2. Looking at that image above, the whole streetscene looks empty, deserted. It looks like nobody lives there, and that has to change.

Point 3. We've heard so much speculation about what the Abu Dhabi investment might bring to to the site, and so far....well not a lot really. Dirt shifting and a lot of promises and speculation.
The stadium continues to underwhelm.
The new facilities proposed, whilst welcome are hardly the stuff of dreams. Most of the 'investment' so far has gone into fattening the bank balances of mercenary footballers who probably don't give a shit about the football club, Manchester or its environs.

To use that hideous Olympic phrase.........what will the long term physical legacy of the Abu Dhabi Phase be?

Eh? Just because it has less seats that the Swamp? Have you ever been to a game at The Etihad? Old Trafford is a ramshackle affair with seat rows SO narrow even the shortest of short arses (thats me by the way) has his knees jammed against the seat back in front - and I've sat in the Stretford End (on my hands mind) so I know its no better than that rotting toilet corner you put us away fans in.

The Etihad is positively palatial in comparison - I reckon if we packed seats in at the same rake as you do we'd get a another 10,0000 seats in.

One last thing, even as an ordinary punter in the second tier, I have a 'padded seat'...

I will concede one point - your barstaff get the beer over the counter far faster than ours - this HAS to change...

Don't get me started Thinking of investing in one of those camelbak hydration jobs for next year and sneaking a few pints of Dark Mild in. If anyone asks I'll tell them I'm pregnant.

That new bridge and the associated development on the Aniline site is going to look brilliant, I can't wait to be walking up Ashton Old Road in the dark with that all lit up in the distance. Exciting times indeed!

Best regards,

Has anyone got any timeframe for this development? Read last year in September that the club hoped building work would begin in 2012 if they got permission in December - which they did of course.

I assume they are still shifting mud around and doing remediating work?

The answer to that question is currently no.

From what I remember the mud shifting should be completed by the end of this year.

Four contractors are fighting-it out to build a new training academy for Manchester City’s youth team.

Construction information specialist Glenigan said Carillion, Bam, Laing O’Rourke and Bowmer & Kirkland are the semi-finalists in the race for the high-profile job.

City chiefs are keen to bring more players through the ranks with the training academy seen as a vital part of the club’s progress following last night’s 1-0 win over Manchester United in a victory which now makes them title favourites.

The academy plans were originally priced at £100m but current estimates are for the contract to be worth around half that.

Plans at the site on land next to the Etihad stadium include:

•A home for up to 400 young players who will train and study alongside senior players, with a clear development pathway to the first team
•One half size and 11 full size youth development pitches
•One half size and 4 full size first team pitches
•On site sleeping accommodation and classroom facility for 40 young players to allow them to train and study in a safe and secure environment
•A carefully planned first team building with changing rooms, gym, refectory and injury and rehab centre
•A 7,000 capacity stadium for youth matches
•Staff offices and a dedicated media centre
•A bridge linking the site to the Etihad Stadium and the rest of the Etihad Campus

Manchester City training ground to go green with butterflies, bees and dormice living among 6,000 imported trees
Mike Keegan
May 29, 2012

Butterflies, bees and dormice living among 6,000 imported trees does not sound like your average football training ground.

But Manchester City’s players will be at one with nature when the Blues’ £110m complex comes to fruition. The club’s head of corporate responsibility, Pete Bradshaw, told the M.E.N. they hope to be in the sprawling 100-acre site across the road from the Etihad Stadium by 2015. He disclosed a list of eco-friendly features aimed at breathing fresh air into a deprived part of east Manchester.

They include:

6,000 trees imported from Germany;
Underground water tanks the size of football pitches;
Plans to use solar panels and geothermal power.
The site, which will be connected to the ground by a bridge over Ashton New Road, is currently undergoing remedial work. Mr Bradshaw said City’s drive to help the local community was already under way.

He said: “There are just under 100 people working there at the moment and of those 64 were taken off the long-term unemployment list in Manchester. Half of those are under 24 and are now engaged with ongoing training working on programmes that can give them transferable skills. When the site changes, some will hopefully work on the construction side.”

Mr Bradshaw told of hopes to create a ‘major wildlife habitat’.

He said: “It will be instant greenery and a change for that part of the city. Some of the trees are already here in a nursery being acclimatised to the north-west weather.

“There will be two massive underground tanks that will collect and store 150,000 litres of rainwater. That will be used on pitches, to flush toilets and for general clean-down. We will also be reusing water collected off the site for drinking.”

He said City plan to make the whole site energy efficient and did not rule out the use of wind turbines. He added: “That’s the aim. We are still considering energy generation, solar panels and geothermal power.

“On the site of the stadium we already have planning permission for a wind turbine but technology keeps changing. It’s something we'll keep an eye on.”

Just posted this on Blue Moon.

The muddy hole pictures will have to wait. For those who want to see them. Got some crackers. :-)

Moving on. Sorry for the delay. Just got back from town, uploading the pics, etc.

Credit goes to Bluebee2 for tipping me off via PM.

If anyone else wants to see the cladding in the flesh, it's located behind the HSBC Bank. You'll have to bring some step ladders to get a proper view. Or do some climbing like I did. ;-)

Not sure exactly what building the claddding is for, but these drawings/renders/images may help?

Link to the planning portal at the bottom of the page.

http://www.publicaccess.manchester.g...342/OO/2011/N2

It's not obvious, but the cladding also contains a window.

Looks like that cladding thingummy is a temporary mockup (like a carpet swatch but bigger) of the base of the mini-arena frontage onto Alan Turing Way so people can see how its going to look in the flesh
Compare very bottom image of this picture

With these two shots of jrb's

Are there any plans to extend the canal basin into the site to bring some water in?

Always think everything looks great with water...like the low-rise stuff in the Quays with the canal basin and channels running through it..

Don't usually see eye to eye with you Fly but that is a good idea - though the plans made public say no besides they'd have to employ someone in a dinghy to go and get all the balls kicked into the water

I'm not the only one thinking this would be a bad idea?? It would be nice to see the Ashton Canal incorporated in some way.

I walked down the towpath the other day on the way to the Coldplay concert. The area around chips is pleasant, but after that its full of litter and disused buildings. I assume Urban Splash owns them but simply does not have the interest or money to dispose of them.

It is exactly like the impression of east Manchester you get when coming into Manchester Piccadilly through Ardwick. I'm hoping the involvement of City and the training site, leisure & education facilities for the community helps to change that & we might be able to finally see a post-industrial east Manchester, rather than the derelict state its in now.

What's the plan for the current training ground once this one is up and running?

1.35 onwards shows the extent of the canal. Not very significant to be honest. See still below as well.

At a guess. Probably sell it off. Can't see there being a need for it afterwards. They could keep it though in some capacity. Who knows?

A proper close up of the cladding, from inside the Aniline site.
