Lithuania's wood processing industry

Export 2011 - €1,991 billion

Brown is furniture, orange is paper and pink is various other production. What is important to mention here is that export of veneer log (unprocessed wood) was only €149 million, which is very encouraging. Instead of selling a cheap raw material, it is instead processed here and sold for a far bigger price.

Average wage and a number of employees in some of the wood processing companies. Gross average wage in Lithuania in Q4 2011 was LTL 2175

1 EUR = 3,45 LTL

Export destinations:

Elektrenai, midway between Vilnius and Kaunas

€226 mln were invested into construction of a brand new, sophisticated 455MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine at the "Lietuvos Elektrine" (1800MW). They've just recently finished and the new block is still being tested. The new, 9th block, will replace the 300MW of the 3rd and 4th, obscenely inefficient Commie era built blocks, reducing the need for natural gas by 30%. 21 new workplace was created for highly educated professionals.

As mentioned before, "Margasmiltė", with it's partners, will invest up to €60 mln into construction of the mine that is estimated to start at the second half of 2013.

"Lithuania's internal water-route direction" will invest €3 mln into construction of a 120m long terminal in Marvele, Kaunas river port, that will serve "Margasmiltė" plans to transport up to 0,8 mln tones of anhydrite through Nemunas river and Curonian lagoon to the port of Klaipeda each year. They are now in a process of strengthening the Nemunas riverbed on a 20km long stretch between Jurbarkas and Viešvilė, that will stop erosion and secure safe shipping conditions.

"National river transport development association" is investing €36 mln into purchase of 10 new cargo barges. They already have a signed contract with "Margasmiltė" in place, for shipping at least 0,3 mln tones of anhydrite to Klaipeda per year.

Pagiriai mine is also expected to pave way to construction of up to 4 anhydrite processing factories in Kaunas.

"Achema" is a leading manufacturer of nitrogen fertilizers and chemical products in Lithuania and the Baltics. It is also one of the largest industrial enterprises in the country with over 1400 employees and a turnover of €632 mln in 2011.

http://www.efoto.lt/node/358626

Quote:
In 2009 Achema completed the second investment programme worth € 145 mln, for fertilizer production development, reduction of energy consumption and pollution mitigation.

The second investment programme included:
  • A new isothermal nitrogen storage facility.
  • A new ammonia production unit.

  • A new liquid carbon dioxide production unit.
  • A new methanol production unit.
  • A new nitric acid production unit.

  • A new urea formaldehyde resins production unit. Further expansion is ongoing and until the end of 2014 production of urea formaldehyde resins will expand from existing capacity of 75 thousand t/year to 200 thousand t/year.
  • Two Kyoto Protocol related projects that will decrease greenhouse gas emission by 70-80% by the end of 2012. "Achema" has since been deleted from the "Helsinki list" of 162 largest polluters along the Baltic sea.
  • And a new urea production unit.

Last year "Achema" has:
  • Launched a new 47 MW gas-fired cogeneration power plant worth €30 mln. Together with similar 21 MW plant No.1 operating from 2004, both plants can entirely supply the company with power and steam. Excess power and steam is delivered to other companies in the market that are connected to the network.
  • Finished the first stage of ammonia plant No.1 reconstruction, which further decreased greenhouse gas emissions and decreased natural gas consumption, thus making the company more competitive.
  • Started the development of a new - third investment programme - the "Implementation of New Liquid and Gaseous Product Manufacturing Technologies in Achema". After implementing the programme, the company will be able to produce high quality liquid and gaseous argon, oxygen and nitrogen. The amount to be invested is undisclosed.

Regarding that picture from Achema's site with the priests in it: while i do have a certain amount of respect for tradition and don't necessarily condemn as idiots those that are religious, those priests and the tradition to christen almost everything that is new in Lithuania cracks me up to be honest...

"May the Lord almighty protect this nitric acid production facility, make it safe and prosperous. In The Name Of The Father, Son And Holy Spirit, Amen!"

Ariogala, county of Kaunas

Norwegian "Skorgenes" manufactures luxurious yachts in a small town of Ariogala, not far from Kaunas. Yachts up to 45 meter in length and €1 mln in cost.

The company is planning an expansion of it's existing facilities to increase production capacity from current ~50 yachts per year. They were planning a construction of an entirely new and large factory in a town of Jurbarkas near an existing wharf on Nemunas river. Local government however messed that up completely and "Skorgenes" moved these large scale plans of theirs to Sweden. The then mayor of Jurbarkas lost his job quickly afterwards.

The amount of money to be invested is undisclosed though.

A year old, but an interesting article nonetheless.

Lithuanians will manufacture components for ESA satellite

Quote:
The Lithuanian company Optolita, part of the Eksma Group specializing in optical components, will produce high precision coated optical components for the satellite of European Space Agency (ESA). This satellite Earth Explorer Atmospheric Dynamics Mission (ADM-Aeolus) will be launched into space in 2013 to investigate Earth's atmosphere.

"Selection of producers took a few years, as satellite developers set very high quality and service requirements. We are happy that Lithuanian technology producers proved that they are able to participate in space programs,“ Mr. Rimantas Kraujalis, Director of Optolita, said.

https://earth.esa.int/web/guest/miss...ons/adm-aeolus

ESA satellite ADM-Aeolus will be the first device that will allow to monitor atmosphere phenomena from the space. It will provide detailed global observations of wind profiles, cloud distribution etc. which will help improve the quality of long-term weather forecasts, lead to greater accuracy in scientific climate research as well as advance people‘s perception of atmospheric dynamics and climate processes.

Optolita exports 75 % of its products under the brand name "Eksma Optics" to more than 50 countries around the world. The rest of Optolita‘s production is supplied to Lithuanian laser technology businesses and scientific institutions.

Nothing groundbreaking, but it's a start, a sign of good things yet to come.

First solar plant equipped with Lithuanian Solet modules launched in Bulgaria

On Monday, a solar power plant has been launched in Bulgaria, for which modules named Solet were produced by Lithuanian company Precizika.

Precizika is the only company in the Baltic States producing solar modules and the solar power plant in Bulgaria is the first largest project involving Lithuanian capital in the area of renewable solar energy, writes LETA/ELTA.

"1.5 megawatt for those who understand is a number which means high capacity. This is the first Lithuanian producers' step in the solar energy area, and we are proud to have opened the door for further big steps outside Lithuania. While, others are only discussing solar energy, similarly to basketball and ecology, we are no more demonstrating ideas or plans but real facts and Lithuanian producers' investments abroad of the highest quality that have already been fulfilled," Tomas Baranauskas, Director General of Precizika said.

Bulgarian representative Konstantin Popov said that the new project will enable Bulgaria to receive solar energy by means of products that conform to European standards.
