Yep, curiously the Strand has little names for its sections. Mons Square is my fave, still shite though.

Don't know why it says Lime Street, but there is one inside of St. John's Precinct, near the food court.

This is from the front page of Rapid's website:

'We have now fully refurbished over 100,00 sq ft to give our customers an even better, brighter shopping experience all under one roof, (it's a big roof!) Another 60,000 sq ft will open this year giving an even bigger choice of new products, more details to follow'.

Is another floor in the building about to open? I know Poundland are taking over the Williamson Sq corner so thought they were downsizing not expanding.

Ah I wonder if Rapid have taken that awkward part of the building that Grosvenor have been trying to flog for years between TK Maxx and Rapid. The signs to the Rapid entrance in Poundland's window are pointing in that direction.

Liverpool One extends trading for Olympics

Retailers in Liverpool One have voted to increase their Sunday trading hours in the weeks surrounding the Olympics.

For the eight-week period from Sunday 22 July, all Liverpool One stores will extend their core Sunday trading hours to 10am-6pm instead of 11am-5pm, giving the public an extra two hours of shopping time.
Liverpool One estate manager Grosvenor said the change in trading hours fell in line with the Government's plans to relax Sunday trading hours for the Olympics season in a bid to show the world that the UK is 'open for business' - a move announced in the Budget in March.

Matt Bell, business and customer service director, Liverpool One, said: "We hope Liverpool One's extended Sunday opening hours will encourage more shoppers to make a day of it when they visit and utilise our unique features like Chavasse Park and our extensive summer events programme."

This really should be permanent. It's ridiculous that the law still limits Sunday trading.

The re-development of the former New Mersey Motor Company premises in Hunts Cross (opposite the BP garage near the KFC) into a non-food A1 retail unit and separate car repair/hire centre is up for approval, subject to conditions, a legal agreement, and not being called in by the Secretary of State, at next week's Planning Committee meeting.

It looks like my estimate was wide of the mark as the new Tesco Express will open on Friday 29th June. They still have quite a bit of work to do though. Although structurally complete, the building is currently nothing more than a shell without windows.

Good to see there's named operators already on board. From the Interim Planning Officer's report -

Quote:
Time Limit for Planning Permission

The Interim Head of Planning considers that securing the development of the application site, the associated improvements to the local environment and the jobs associated with the retail scheme are absolutely key to the regenerative impact this planning permission would have. For this reason he considers that it is reasonable to give an incentive for the developer to make an early commitment to developing the site and making the investment in the local economy. To this end the Interim Head of Planning is recommending that planning permission is granted with a time limit requiring commencement of development within one year of the grant of planning permission.

Jacobs will be closing in Liverpool due to administration.

Jacobs shuts seven stores, axes jobs

By Chris Cheesman

Friday, 8 June 2012

Camera chain Jacobs has shut down seven shops, axed around a third of its staff and has received offers from potential buyers, a week after it called in administrators.

The family-run business, which was founded in 1939, has made 46 people redundant out of a total of 154 staff.

Shutting up shop are the stores in Birmingham, Chelsea, Derby, Hull, Kingston-upon-Thames, Liverpool and Sheffield.

The closures represent more than a third of Jacob's estate.

Eddie Kerr, a partner at accountancy firm PKF who is acting as joint administrator, said: 'We have taken the difficult decision to close a number of Jacobs stores and make redundancies across the business.

'These measures are painful for everyone involved but they are essential if we are to have a reasonable prospect of finding a buyer for the business as a going concern, although we recognise there are likely to be more challenges ahead.'

Kerr added: 'We have already had a number of expressions of interest from potential acquirers and are in a position to begin negotiations.'

Among the shops to close is the Jacobs store in Hull, which employs four staff in addition to a regional manager.

Earlier today, employees in Hull were told to collect their belongings.

Jacobs called in administrators amid unremitting 'difficult trading conditions', according to PKF.

From the Echo -

Quote:
Shopping centres down 45,000 customers because of Liverpool Central station closure

THE closure of Central station has seen nearby businesses lose up to 45,000 customers a week.

The Clayton Square shopping centre said “footfall” had slumped by around 30% since the station was closed for a revamp.

Ian Strettle, manager of the centre, said: “Some traders are feeling it and some less so. Some are quite resilient but the overall impact is that there’s less money coming through the tills.

“The station will open again in October and that’s good but it’s the summer trade we are really missing.

“When I say 30% down, we’re talking about around 45,000 shoppers a week.”

Ranelagh Street Greenwoods manager Les Donbavand added: “We are really feeling it. It’s completely deserted here.”

He said the fact the bus that picks up passengers from Moorfields stopped at Liverpool One meant many shoppers had got off before arriving at Central station.
