gif avatar?

how do i add a gif as an avatar? it keeps on telling me remote file is too large.

You need to crop or/and resize it to 85x85.

does it have to be exactly 85x85?

Yes and 24.4 KB by most, though you can try it a bit bigger it could resize it for you. Although from experience it only resize them if they're URLs but when you upload it it has to be exact or less.
