Thank you I live in the area, and the town itself is a shadow of what it once was. But you can't beat having views like this from your kitchen window

Greenock is in such a fantastic area of mountains and lochs and distant views of mountains and lochs - in theory that whole area (Inverclyde?) really should be a desirable place to live but has some of the cheapest house prices in the whole of the UK.

Agreed, I'd love to live in that area (excluding the weather of course )

Well I think you probably have to consider the average person's quality of life, and their everyday experience.

I know that area relatively well, and it's great, but it's not really the case that most people live in a smart townhouse in Glasgow or one of the towns along the Clyde and go into the mountains/Loch Lomond.

I live a stones throw from the Yorkshire Dales but hardly ever go there. Maybe twice a year on a sunny summer day?

In reality the things that make somewhere desirable are much more mundane, like job availability, earnings, cost of living... I suppose once you get out of the main urban areas the cost of living is high in Scotland as you require a car to get everywhere, and your nearest shops will rarely be a massive cheap Tesco Extra.

Inverclyde is well connected to Glasgow though. I can get to the city by train in 30 mins, or less by car (depending on traffic). The area has 14 train stations with decent frequency. There's also a large number of villas in Gourock and Greenock's West End, so the low house prices could be considered surprising.

Though on the flip side, poverty levels are high and Greenock town centre was irrevocably ruined in the 60s. Oh and the weather is actually wetter than Glasgow, believe it or not.

If you're in a good, well paid job then I'm sure it's a great place to live. But I think really, how many of those is Glasgow actually providing- and more importantly, how many of them are living in Inverclyde?

I'm sure house prices will be generally higher for a boring 60s house in an average commuter town for Edinburgh than a beautiful house in Inverclyde. Of course setting plays a part, but perhaps not as much as we might like it to compared to jobs, salaries etc. London proves this where you'd pay sky-high rent for a box despite a low quality of life compared to what you'd get in Inverclyde.

Let's keep this relative to Glasgow's hinterland. That villa in Greenock is considerably less expensive than a similar villa in Largs, Helensburgh or Paisley. Butterfield notes an inconsistency there.
