Birmingham|UK|A City with more canals than Venice (my photos)

Birmingham in the UK is a city of officially 1 million people, and is one of the largest (if the largest) cities in the UK outside of London. Now like any other city Birmingham is rich with history and culture, and Birmingham's canal network is a huge part of the cities history. With the local council constantly using the catchphrase that the city has more canals than Venice, which it does. I wanted to show you what the canals are really like in Birmingham and how different they are compared to other canal cities. I went on a barge trip around the City a few months back and here are some of the pictures I took.

I've also heard Birmingham, UK described as the Venice of England. Now I know why.

Fantastic Pictures Brummy.

It's nice to see other shot's which don't reflect the big shiny buildings and the true grit of this industrial powerhouse.

The reason's the canals were built in the first place.

Cheers everyone, and yes Eco, I want to show people that it may not be as pretty as Venice or Amsterdam, however it was a fantastic experience that realy gave me a chance to explore our diverse canal network, and it gets me excitied due to the shear amount of potential the canals have.

More to come...

Fantastic photos mate, I love Canals. Always wanted to do the BCN's. I have only ever done the Kennet and Avon (but never through Bath or Bristol ).

Brummyboy (and anyone else interested in canals), BBC4 had a program on last night which walked the Birmingham - Worcester canal. Some nice aerial shots and telling of the area's history.

Birmingham - a place I would never bother with - until now (well apart from a Black Sabbath gig)

Thanks for photographs!

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for posting all these beautiful photographs of the Birmingham canals. I work for Sherborne Wharf and we run all the canal boat trips across the city. We will be featuring this blog on our Facebook page (/sherbornewharf), so look out for it and please share more photographs with us as you take them. We are currently looking for a new cover photo for our page so if you have any ideas just submit them on Facebook!

Thanks again,

Jodie - Sherborne Wharf
