My apologies. I thought there was talk of building a concrete strip at Barton to accommodate business jets. MAN caters for this Market very well so I think Barton would find it tough. Yes, it would gain a few, but not many.

At the end of the day, I think it's appropriate that MAN doesn't cater for the small cessna and piper aircraft. It would clog up the runways detracting from large jet use, and also it would be a crazy PPL holder that would volunteer to 'ride the vortex' behind an A380/B747 or B777.

Although I like the idea of Barton/City being for smaller jets or something akin to Biggin Hill London, I would much rather see Manchester (Ringway) beefed up and become the second/third largest airport in the UK. I think we're 4th now aren't we? 3rd? I don't know.

Northern Hub and SEMMMS will see Ringway get larger and larger and soak up any traffic lost to LJL and LBA in the past 10 years.

They said they were going to tarmac the runways a couple of years ago to improve its performance in all weather and allow heavier planes to land. Since then its gone quiet.

Sorry, old info.
Manchester has been growing again.
Stansted has been in decline over the same period.
We overtook them again late last year.

1st LHR
2nd LGW
3rd MAN
4th STN

3rd place up for grabs

MAN is definitely 3rd over Stansted at present based on the widely accepted basis of annual passenger totals. MAN currently handling about 1 million pax per year more than STN. However, Stansted saw a few thousand MORE passengers than Manchester in April, (check out the figures on the CAA website), and showed signs that its decline was slowing. Meanwhile, Manchester figures so far in May don't look great and will probably end up showing no growth over last year. With the Olympic boost helping Stansted this year, I would say third place is up for grabs.

Roverman, you have misunderstood the seasonality and 12 month rolling average calculations for the two airports.

Stansted is way behind Manchester now...probably going to be 2m behind for 2012 as a whole.

The Olympics? I would wager they will lead to a decline in overall tourist numbers as people are deterred by the ramping of prices. There will be no traffic bubble from the Olympics for London.

Just been looking through Peel's latest core strategy representations. Bit of info on this, probably just restating previous submissions.

http://www.salford.gov.uk/core-strategy.htm

Quote:
11.53 City Airport has been the subject of considerable investment in recent years,
notably through the new City Heliport facility and Greater Manchester Police
helicopter facilities. The Control Tower and original hangar, both of which are
listed buildings have also been refurbished. Over the next 15 years, further
investment will take place to ensure City Airport can grow sustainably. This may
involve the following:
  • New or realigned runway
  • Additional hangarage and other built operational facilities
  • Enhanced passenger facilities
  • Tourism facilities (including further investment in a City Airport museum)
  • Additional car parking
  • Landscaping and A57 'frontage' enhancements
11.54 As operator of both Port Salford and City Airport (and an experienced operator of
major ports and airports across the UK), Peel considers that the growth of Port
Salford and City Airport can be achieved in a complementary manner. Detailed
technical and design issues will need to be taken into account as proposals come
forward.

11.55 The need for a clear investment strategy at the Airport, both for its own purposes
and so that wider stakeholders are engaged in the future of the Airport, is
recognised. To this end, Peel will bring forward an investment plan for the Airport
and will consult upon it with the Council, the community and other relevant groups,
using the Airport Consultative Committee (ACC) as a platform. This will also allow
decisions on individual proposals to be made in context. The plan will also consider
in further detail the operational interaction between Port Salford and City Airport, to
ensure that both investments can be jointly achieved. This will inform the detailed
design of both Port Salford and future Airport proposals.

More Here: http://www.salford.gov.uk/d/peel-hol...iew-report.pdf p.118 onwards, summary report from Peel
And in a separate report from SCC,
Quote:
15.7 The city council wrote to Peel Holdings in March 2010 regarding the
approach in the Core Strategy to Barton Aerodrome, and explained
that Peel would need to demonstrate they had the support of the Civil
Aviation Authority if the hard surface runway proposal in the Draft Core
Strategy was to be retained. No evidence has been provided on this
matter, and so the proposal is not included in the Publication Core
Strategy.
