Im all for the moggil ferry to be taken out to sea and sunk with captain Margret de Witt going down with the ship.

Sometimes the line up for the ferry is bonkers. A bridge there would solve the access issue into the 'peninsula' (of doom.... and home to some of the worst nimby's).

I like Mac's green bridge idea or just even a footbridge. A bus could get you to darra via mt ommaney.. but still if youre heading into the city you'd be on the 444 anyway.

I still think that area needs to bridge up. Ive seen the gully a few k's into karalee along junction rd flood and that's it... 4500 people stuck at home today.

Karalee and belbowrie pocket's are the most retarded and maybe to a lesser extent the Mandalay end of Fig Tree Pocket. There's a few spots along the Logan river which i reckon would be a pain to travel into Beenleigh or Logan.

anyhoo hope that ferry dies soon.
Amen

I used to live in Belbowrie a decade ago and the ferry was a pain in the arse then. The only people who want the ferry to stay are the highly-paid professionals who either work in Kenmore or don't leave the suburb.

And yes a FULL Bridge to Westlake so this area could access the Centenary Hwy and the Darra/Oxley railway would be a big plus.

I had the misfortune of driving from morningside to the valley this morning on wynumm. It took 50mins when the off peak trip takes 10min. No accidents, just pure capacity issue and intersection delays. I was almost stationary for 90% of the time.

Surely has to be the worst inner city road in Brisbane from morningside to the city in the morning peak.

I remember there was an upgrade planned but delayed. Does anyone know whether there is a fix planned?

God yes. I had the misfortune of dropping my GF in Adelaide St one day when the trains were down. The round trip from Cannon Hill to the CBD and back took 55 minutes. It took a hint under 12 minutes to drive from the CBD to Cannon Hill. So about a quarter of the time it took to get to city in the first place. Never again, I don't know why any person would submit themselves to it.

I know! Can't understand why people bother. Joggers were passing us and would have made it in 30mins. Clem 7 missed an opportunity - if they'd extended their entry tunnel to Norman Park they'd be raking in the $. By the time you get to the entry point the worst is over and you've already spent 45 mins at a standstill.

Looks like we will be waiting for the opening of airport link a little longer than planned

Two-month Airport Link delay to cost $60m

Brisbane’s $4.8 billion Airport Link tunnel will not be open until August in a two-month delay that will cost its builders, Thiess John Holland, an extra $60 million.

The tunnel had been expected to open by June 30 and is liable for rolling penalties of $1.2 million a day.

That would total $60 million by August 20, the date Thiess John Holland’s parent body, Leighton Holdings, is now naming as Airport Link’s likely opening date.

Advertisement: Story continues below

A spokesman for Leighton Holdings this morning said Thiess John Holland had advised Leighton Holdings in March it may be late in finishing the project.

Thiess John Holland, which is owned by Leighton Holdings, was responsible for liquidated damages for the delay, the spokesman confirmed.

However the spokesman said Thiess John Holland had ‘‘made appropriate commercial arrangements'’ to cover the loss due to the delay.

In a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange this morning Leighton explained that while construction of the project would be completed by June, the complex electrical fit-out would still require testing during July.

This morning’s statement came from Leighton Holdings chief executive officer Hamish Tyrwhitt.

‘‘As we advised on 13 February 2012, major construction works are expected to complete in June and the remaining work principally comprises completion of the mechanical and electrical fitout, testing and commissioning,” Mr Tyrwhitt said.

“The construction elements of the project will be completed in line with our expectations with final commissioning and safety testing programmed to be completed through July,’’ he said.

‘‘More than half of the tunnel is now in the commissioning stage with the testing of services including lights, fans, surveillance, fire deluge and ventilation systems, and tolling systems underway.

“The commissioning involves around 12,000 individual tests and TJH has completed some 7,000 of these so far. Whilst remaining commissioning activities are complex, we are anticipating that the final tests will be completed in July allowing the road to then be opened to traffic in August.’’

Thiess John Holland recently completed a review of the independent testing that was required to complete the fit-out.

This review indicates the project should be open to traffic ''on or before 20 August 2012".

A BrisConnections spokeswoman confirmed the Thiess John Holland penalty this morning and said it was working towards opening the tunnel close to Monday, August 20.

When the Clem7 tunnel opened, a public open day was held on the weekend before the tunnel opened to traffic.

On these projected dates, a community open day could be held on the weekend of August 18-19.

Airport Link, Australia’s largest infrastructure project, was expected to open by June 30 this year.

It runs from Bowen Hills, where it connects to the existing Clem7 tunnel, and to near Brisbane Airport through a network of 15 kilometres of tunnels and busway tunnels.

Correction: An earlier version of this story referred to Leighton Contractors as Thiess John Holland’s parent body

I used to live just off wynnum road, Utter hell is the only way to describe it, combined with what may possibly be the nations worst bus service (235/230) meant that what was off peak a 7 min trip to the city blew out into a 40 min trip

Article about business looking forward to Airport Link....like what the taxi's are saying, even with a toll a taxi trip from the airport to the City should still be cheaper - makes sense - less waiting time etc

Mains and Kessels has been banging on aswell. Piling and capping almost done for the eastbound lane retaining wall. Acoustic wall going up where the houses were demolished. Power and telecoms relocation looks like its done, current works looks like early enabling works for the staging of the intersection power and signalling inground stuff. I guess next is temporarily moving the eastbound lane north so they can start on the westbound retaining wall and excavation.

A = Acoustic fence
W = Piling etc for retaining wall almost complete

Interesting in the Airport link pics it tells people going to the Sunshine Coast to take the Gympie Rd exit...I would have thought you'd stay on it and go via the Gateway...

It is faster to go that way from where it puts you onto Gympie Rd, as they Gateway is actually a huge detour and the extra 30kph you would be doing doesn't make up for it.

What I don't understand about M7 tollroads in Brisbane have this obsession with big fat gantry poles. Why cant the gantry poles be thinner? I mean we aren't pumping oil for f' sake!

Scott Emerson is working over Roadtek, moving it away from competing for contracts against private enterprise and turning it into an immediate response type operation.

Government rethinks 'unsustainable' RoadTek

June 13, 2012 - 2:09PM
Read laterComments 1

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson has revealed the state government's plans to do away with the current form of its commercial maintenance and construction wing RoadTek, in a bid to increase taxpayers' "value for money".

Speaking to the Committee for Economic Development of Australia at a luncheon in Brisbane today, Mr Emerson said the contracting arrangement established by the previous Labor government with RoadTek was unsustainable.

RoadTek is a commercial subsidiary of the government responsible for roads and bridges construction and maintenance across Queensland. It tenders for projects against private companies, and is essentially contracted by the government.

Mr Emerson said it was inappropriate for a "de facto government department" to continue to be contracted by the government.

"What began as a step in the right direction was diverted," he said.

"RoadTek is no longer sustainable.

"One of the first major changes in the Transport and Main Roads portfolio will be to reform the delivery model of RoadTek; to remove it from unfairly tendering against private companies in mature markets, such as southeast Queensland.

"This will address the poor value for money ... to ensure we can deliver more roads and better roads."

Mr Emerson said $310 million worth of road projects had been delivered by RoadTek in southeast Queensland so far this financial year.

Mr Emerson went on to explain that traffic controllers contracted by RoadTek were being paid well above award wages, driving up the cost of road projects in the order of $1.5 million in the past financial year.

"In future, road projects will be put out to the most innovative companies and councils to deliver in the most cost effective way," he said.

RoadTek will be tasked with an "immediate response" role, particularly in natural disasters. It will also offer localised services and focus on "boosting expertise" to complete projects the private sector cannot.

"Not only will this deliver taxpayers value for money, it will support the Queensland economy," Mr Emerson said.

He said his department would begin consulting with RoadTek, industry and councils over the impending reforms in the near future.

Airport Link is an urban design disgrace! Even good landscaping does not hide the fact that this project is the biggest visual blight upon Brisbane since the construction of L Block, the Gabba Exchange, the Parliamentary Annex, Indooroopilly Station or Roma St Transit Centre. It is a civil engineer's wet dream! absolutely everything about this project is over designed and over bearing on the surrounding landscape from the hideous viaducts to the oversized poles holding up street signs large enough to be seen from 1km away. also, how a fucking tunnel ends up being a kilometre long viaduct through Kedron I do not know. it looks fucking disgusting! it pisses me off so much that the opportunity a project of this size has to reinvigorate a suburb has not only wasted it, but made it so much worse than what it was before.
