It is a very very small step, but has decreased waiting time at this signal by atleast 5 mins
It shows, if planned intelligently even a small step can have visible result.

Today while going to office,I found that they have started laying a new layer on the stretch between Science City and Ruby,in the last two days the work has partly progressed till Panchannagram stop after we get down from Ambedkar Bridge while going towards Ruby from Parama Island..

Yes, I noticed it too.. let's hope they can complete it till ruby at least before the monsoons. But the problem is that they are just normal bitumen coating and I am not sure whether they will last the onslaught of the rains.

Perfectly said...I just hope that they will last till the Pujas atleast,by when the BRTS work is expected to make some noteceable progress....however,I feel that when they are finally spending money on Bypass, they could have done a better job which would have lasted atleast a year or so!

As a matter of fact the stretch from Hiland Park to Ruby is in a bad shape and with monsoon just a month away it is likely to become even worse.

There are craters of different shapes & sizes not to mention about the undulating surface. It is a pain driving through these roads.

That and the Anwar Shah Road connector - are the worst roads I have travelled anywhere in an Indian Metro. Need didi to take a detour one day on her way to her Kalighat residence!!!

Govt. was supposed to build a 7-km flyover from Jinjira Bazar. It was said that it has been included under JNNURM. Any news regarding that?

Cost escalation creates funding concerns over 2 flyover projects

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/...cle3429458.ece

Cost escalation has created funding concerns over two key flyover projects in Kolkata.

Both the projects - implemented under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) - have missed the original deadline and were recently granted extension of completion schedule.

The projects include Rs 292 crore, 4.6 km-long proposed flyover Park Circus – Parama Island is expected to ease traffic congestion to the airport as well as the IT hub in Salt Lake from the city centre.

The 2.2-km Vivekananda Road Flyover of Rs 153.60 crore is slated to ease traffic between airport and the northern part of the city as well as Howrah Station.

Though the exact amount of cost escalation is not disclosed, according to Mr Debashis Sen, Principal Secretary, State Urban Development Department, the cash-strapped West Bengal government finds it difficult to arrange the additional funds.

Pleas to the Union government for additional funding to the projects did not yield any result. “Escalation of project costs due to additional land requirement and hurdles related to utility structures shifting is turning out to be major concern for the flyover projects under JNNURM in Kolkata. This coupled with the state's fund crunch may delay the completion of flyover projects in the city,” Mr. Sen, told Business Line.

PROJECTS DELAY

Executed by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA); Park Circus-Parama flyover was scheduled to be completed by August . It has now got a fresh deadline of June 2013. The contract of the project was awarded to HCC Infrastructure Ltd.

The Vivekananda Road Flyover originally slated to be operational by March 2012 is now rescheduled to August 2013. IVRCL is the project contractor. Sources in the government feel that the funds crisis may delay completion beyond the rescheduled deadline.

Or, maybe they are planning to put the mastic coating on top of normal bitumen coating, just like they did to the chingrighata by pass..If that were the case then I think they could could have started earlier, say sometime during november(rather than April),whence the entire stretch would be laid by february, and they would have enough time to put mastic coating on top of it. Now if they want to start again after the monsoons, there would be a lot of wear and tear, which would be needed to repair before they can coat it again.

Abar bitumen coating on the byepass?!When will they ever learn. The present bitumen cover needs to dug up and those uneven layers of bitumen over the past few years should be removed, cleaned and leveled and mastic asphalt should be used.Should be good enough for 5 years of no maintainance!

BRTS work is the best excuse these people have. And i am sure BRTS work will take another 2 years to complete.

Land filling and levelling has been done on small stretches in bypass. It will take a long time for BRTS.

I saw pictures of land levelling and planned widening of the bypass between Hiland Park and Ruby. But one thing surprises me. The widening is being done on one side (near the film institute) but not on the opposite side. Does that mean that the midline of the bypass will shift? If so, why are they building the Garia -Airport Metro along the current median ?

Yes even I saw the land filling on one side. From Science city going towards north, I did not see any widening work going on. There are lot of encroachments.

Exactly, someone needs to find the exact alignment of the roads and the metro. AFAIK, there would be |Service road| | 2 lanes for cars | BRTS(1 lane)|Median and metro| BRTS(1 lane)| 2 lanes for cars|Service road|...but somehow I am not being able to fathom how this is going to work out with the construction that's going on presently. Also near chingrighata how they are going to find space for 8 lanes with Beleghata traffic guard, flyover pillars and shops. If someone has more information in this regard ,pls share..

I know, but this bitumen thing is happening really fast..In less than 2 months time they have almost relaid the entire stretch up to Ruby, that too by working only during the night and not halting nor diverting traffic even for a single day.
