Having the world cup played in December or March, for the acceptable temperatures, would be the way to, if feasible.

What? the 500 000 Aborigines that have the same rights as every other Australian citizen plus access to Aboriginal only welfare services that all Australian tax payers pump $billions into every year.

Qatar is nowhere near a moral level pegging with the likes of Australia.

I for one am very happy with Australia's plans to never bid again until FIFA is completely overhauled.

Leave the big events to the big players.

May i remind you Beijing hosted the 2008 Olympics

I wasnt aware of a major civil war in Qatar or a Libya/Syria like situation in which tens of thousands are daily massacred, not to mention any massive public demonstartions and protests to end the so-called "poor human rights".
Big players? Since when was Qatar considered big?

7,617,930 km2 (Australia) vs 11,437 km2 (Qatar), why you can fit 666 Qatars in Australia!

1,853,563 pop (Qatar) vs 22,855,731 pop (Australia)

You do the math.

He's not talking about civil war or massacres, I think he's mostly referring to the poor labour laws and how you treat the foreigners (poor wages, living conditions etc) that are necessary to build your many wonderful high rises and such.

Beijing and China got the 2008 games because of factors, deemed large and significant enough to excuse it's poor human rights record. These namely being location (Asia having only hosted twice prior), huge population (largest in the world), historic city, cultural city and the fact that China IS a sports powerhouse, unlike Qatar. These were more then enough to brush aside the human rights thing, no matter how unpleasant and significant it is.

What, because of their poor living conditions, health, lifestyle choices etc? Technically it's their own fault for such a lifestyle, as many Australian organizations actively try and improve the living conditions of Aboriginal Australians, which is naturally vastly different and worse then non-indigenous Australians.

If they want substance abuse, drugs and alcohol abuse it's their own choice, not because Australia isn't caring enough to support them (although more active efforts should be made to bridge the gap naturally).

Zinedine Zidane To Visit Ghana For Qatar 2022 Project

*
France legend Zinedine Zidane is expected in Ghana in October this year for a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a Qatar 2022 Girls Village.

The facility will be situated at Tampion in the Northern Region of the country.

Zidane has been invited by his former international team-mate and close friend Marcel Desailly, a Qatar 2022 World Cup ambassador.

“Zidane is my good friend and we have worked together on humanitarian projects and I will bring him to Ghana in October to continue his Qatar 2022 project in Ghana,” Desailly said.

“He will cut the sod for the building of the Village, which will represent the everlasting legacy of the World Cup in Africa.”

As part of its broader legacy, the Arab state will donate the upper tier of some of its 12 stadiums to developing countries after the tournament.

Out of curiosity; are there renderings for all of the proposed Soccer arenas that are likely going to be part of the World Cup?

I'm still in disbelief about how Qatar got this world cup. Australia's bid was superior in almost every way, the only thing it was missing was the money to tip off the FIFA officials.

Migrant workers in Qatar risk forced labour, human rights group says

Report highlights range of labour issues amid construction boom for 2022 World Cup

AFP
Published: 00:00 June 13, 2012

Doha: Human Rights Watch (HRW) warned on Tuesday that migrant construction workers in Qatar, which is preparing to host the 2022 World Cup, risk serious abuse amounting to ‘forced labour’.

“The government needs to ensure that the cutting edge, high-tech stadiums it’s planning to build for World Cup fans are not built on the backs of abused and exploited workers,” said HRW Middle East director Sarah Leah Whitson in a statement released at a news conference in Doha.

The New York-based watchdog said construction workers, mostly South Asians, “risk serious exploitation and abuse, sometimes amounting to forced labour,” as it released its report: ‘Building a better World Cup: Protecting migrant workers in Qatar ahead of Fifa 2022.’

The 146-page report was based on interviews with 73 migrant construction workers, as well as meetings and correspondence with government officials, employers, contracting companies, recruitment agents, diplomats from labour-sending countries, and worker advocates, HRW said.

It said the problems migrant workers face include “exorbitant recruitment fees, which can take years to pay off, employers’ routine confiscation of worker passports, and Qatar’s restrictive sponsorship system that gives employers inordinate control over their employees”.

It added: “Workers reported a range of problems, including unpaid wages, illegal salary deductions, crowded and unsanitary labour camps, and unsafe working conditions.”

HRW pointed out that Qatari laws also prohibit migrant workers from unionising or striking, in violation of the International Labour Organisation regulations which identify free association as a core labour right.

Qatar last year became the first Arab country to be awarded rights to host the Fifa World Cup in 2022.

It announced multi-billion-dollar developments in preparation for the global event, including air-conditioned stadiums to cope with high temperature and humidity in the desert state.

HRW said that Qatar may recruit up to one million additional migrant construction workers in the next decade in preparation for the tournament.

It said migrant workers already represent 94 per cent of Qatar’s workforce, the world’s highest ratio of migrants to citizens.

I do hope Russia puts on a good show, because it's going to be a long wait till the next proper World Cup in 2026.

Thanks for posting that article nomarandlee, confirms much of what we already knew.

They have time to sort out their workers issues, first world cup stadium will start construction in 2013. They are already planning on abolishing the sponsorship system and forming a workers union.
