I had the best view yet of this piece from the train a few days ago. Just a little bit of fresh greenery makes all the difference. The profile of the resting face is very impressive aganst the ever-changing skies we're experiencing this Easter.

Blaydon Races - the painting

Will maybe visit the Discovery soon to see the 'Hutch'.

At the Shipley they do have the Blaydon Races painting and there is another picture with the names of all the characters.

Didn't have my camera so didn't get a picture but with the 150th year anniversary soon "1862 on a summers afternoon" I would think the characters all had a story to tell.

Street life in those days must be have been very earthy and colourful!
The painting , courtesy http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/

But much better to see it "on the wall" at the Shipley

Newcastle Publc Art - DNA DL90. (aka the Shopping Trolley artwork)

Took some pictures of this artwork located in Central Square, off Forth Street, (near Telegraph Pub and Post Office Sorting Office at rear of Central Station)

Think it is improved in this one by parked bicycle

More on the work in this http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/tyne/hi/...00/8295356.stm

Was erected in October 2009 but according to article it is only to be there for 5 years - so roll on 2014

Where is the Paolozzi sculpture whose place this has taken?

Gateshead Public Artworks

I had a dig above regards Newcastle City's the Shopping Trolley artwork but consider some of the "pieces" that appear across the Gateshead borough as identified in the following council articles (with pictures)

Art in Gateshead http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/Leisure%...t/arthome.aspx

Pre Angel http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/Leisure%...ngel/Home.aspx

Post Angel http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/Leisure%...ngel/Home.aspx

Riverside Park http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/Leisure%...side-Park.aspx

Temporary Artworks http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/Leisure%...Temp/home.aspx

These are a selection of the artworks photographed by myself over the months and years (hosted on Photobucket)

Not forgetting the big one

Not to everyone's taste - and some thought provoking

The statue is Vulcan by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi.

I have visited his studio in Edinburgh.

As far as the statue is concerned the last time I searched it was at a Cathedral in the south of England.

It is due to come back after five years of touring but not sure who is the authority who ensures it will return!

Here's an interesting [though I suspect not wholly current] brochure with walks around the public artworks of Tyneside:

http://www.visitsunderland.com/docum...e_and_Wear.pdf

Newcastle CC still lists Vulcan as being in situ....

http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/leisure-...re-west#vulcan

Vulcan - Sir Eduardo Paolozzi 2000
Location - Central Square, to the rear of Central Station
Materials - Bronze
Commissioned by - Parabola Estates

Paolozzi has produced a series of works around the robotic man machine theme. One of the latest in this series, it takes as its subject Vulcan, the God of the forge, who was ugly in appearance but created things of beauty and weapons of war. The subject is appropriate to the location with the proximity of Robert Stephenson’s locomotive workshop in South Street.

The last line is particularly convoluted..

It was [or most probably still is] parked in front of Gloucester Cathedral for an exhibition called Crucible2010, described as the sculpture event of the decade, but it only ran for three months, from 1st Sept - 7th Nov... so if it s still there, perhaps we could 'ave it back

Vulcan

It was commissioned by Parabola Estates of Central Square so are they the owners?

They presumably would know of the whereabouts of the sculpture?

North Tyneside Mayor unveils plaque
to artist John Falconar Slater

by Tony Henderson, The Journal, May 24th 2012

A LOVE OF the sea drew artist John Falconar Slater and ex-seafarer Steve Barrigan to the same house on the North East coast. Slater spent the last 12 years of his life, until his death in 1937, in the Victorian terrace house in St Oswin’s Avenue in Cullercoats, a village famous for its artists’ colony.

When Steve, 56, left the merchant navy after seven years, he decided he had to settle near the sea and rented a room in the same house, and yesterday, on the 75th anniversary of Slater’s death, North Tyneside Mayor Linda Arkley unveiled a commemorative plaque to Slater at the house at the request of Steve and wife Alwyne.

Slater is now recognised as one of the leading English Impressionist painters and was known as the “weatherproof artist “because of his habit of painting outdoors – especially seascapes and coastal scenes – in all conditions. One of his works, Stormy Sea at Cullercoats, is in the North Tyneside Council art collection.

Steve said “Slater was outstanding in his field and we wanted to do something to celebrate that and the Cullercoats artists’ colony. We had it in our hearts to have a commemorative plaque, even if we did it ourselves. It is fantastic to see this recognition for Slater and it’s brilliant for Cullercoats.”

North East art historian Marshall Hall, who is writing a book on Slater and was at yesterday’s ceremony, told how he had spent several sessions talking to the artist’s surviving daughter Dorothy in her last years. He said: “Dorothy would tall fondly about the house as it was the first family home they could afford to buy after renting several properties in Whitley Bay.

“The unveiling of the plaque fulfills a long-term desire to see Slater fully recognised and this puts the seal on his reputation.”

I like public art. The good and the bad. It is all a matter of taste but once piece that really - REALLY annoys me is that bloody mock crane at Northumberland Quay.

They put the damn thing us as they were ripping down the real cranes at Smiths Dock.

I mean, the stupidity. As a work of art I don't really like it as it looks nowt like a crane. Jobs lost, and industry dead and the whack up a stupid insult.

The Vickers Crane at Walker is a fine monument to the Tyne.

I get that industry dies and times change. Had they kept a few of the Smiths cranes and incorporated them into any developemnt there, that would have been great. It works in parts of London's Docklands.

Tyne anew is just a bloody insult where it is.

The Blue Carpet, Newcastle upon Tyne 03/06/12

Following the recent discussion on the "Remembering Historic Newcastle Thread" concerning this area and what it used to look like prior to this "artwork" being installed here are some pictures of it taken by myself 03/06/12 approx 1115 on an overcast Sunday morning - mind you that is not the reason for the lack of blue colour

Across the work towards Newcastle Building Society Office

Looking towards entrance to Laing Gallery - with "normal paving" in the foreground

And finally a close up showing where replacement "blue" units used at former seat locations etc

It was all supposed to look blue

Money well spent - I do not think so

Jarrow Roundabout Artwork called "Words on the Wing"

Came across this art installation when out and about in Hebburn/Jarrow area on morning of 17/07/12

It is called "Words on the Wing"

These photographs (looking east) by myself 17/07/12 approx 0930 together with screen print of google map showing view from above ( all hosted on Photobucket)

Should have taken picture of sign in its entire form - wrongly assumed would be information on the web about the work
