I love the state house. If I dare say it is one of the most beautiful ones in the US!

Des Moines has a nice downtown. It looks like it has some good density and height for the skyline.

It's interesting to see someone post images of Des Moines that correspond to how I see it -- along with Boston and the Quad Cities, it's one of my three hometowns, though after 20-plus years in L.A. I'm pretty much a Southern Californian.
These images show the city's downtown and Gray's Lake to the southwest as they appear in slate-gray late winter: hardly a cornfield small town but also hardly the major metropolis that some of D.M.'s current residents imagine. The umbrella sculpture, by the way, is by Claes Oldenburg. The Po-Mo building behind it was designed by Richard Meier and completed in the early '80s. DM, despite its small size, has always been able to attract exceptional architectural and public-art talent. At the west end of the downtown area, the new library designed by David Chipperfield and also the adjacent urban sculpture park are gorgeous. I'd say even L.A. could take some cues from the environmentally conscious work of Chipperfield et al. in little DM. http://www.bdonline.co.uk/story.asp?...rycode=3067572 Last edited by calmuse; March 31st, 2008 at 06:58 PM. |

Des Moines reminds me of a slightly larger Rochester, MN.

humm...grew up in southern MN/N Iowa area and now live in DSM. I respectfully don't see that. Downtown DSM has a much bigger feel to it than its population would suggest. Rochester's downtown is nice for its size, but doesn't really provide the surprises that DSM's offers.

I LOVE Des Moines downtown library. The fascade is gorgeous. Stopped in Des Moines en route to Minneapolis and had lunch then walked to the library and around downtown. Very impressed.

Des Moines, Iowa
If you've ever stayed at the Holiday Inn, this is the view from your window.

Nice shot with the sunlight hitting the buildings from the side. It would be nice to see some more action on this thread so we can find out what has been going on in Des Moines. Anything happen during the past three years since the last post (prior to the one above)? Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide an update.
