all you need to do is object on clear planning issues. Design, transport/traffic etc however, in principle i reckon they will argue they are brinigng an underused emplyment site back into use albeit with a lower amount of jobs and will site a need for more hotel space, particularly budget.

Over the past couple of weeks there have been workers inside this, I REALLY hope it hasn't been approved.

Whilst its annoying we could have had a complete overhaul of the building I don't think it's too bad, the current building isn't exactly a huge eyesore and they will be replacing the glazing and repairing and re coating the cladding

Very disappointed with this, its really just going to bring the image down of the station and just won't complement Motel One which have really put effort into refurbishing Ladywood House. But from when I saw workings in this building I knew it was going to get approved anyway.

I just hope they prove us wrong with cleaning it up, and removing them awful mirrored windows!! BCC will have a lot to answer for if this turns out looking like the Premier Inn in West Bromwich!!

This is one of those buildings that has just been there and I don't really find offensive - with new glazing and cladding why should it be any worse?

Agree

Its not an eyesore, but I do agree a lost opportunity as something better could have been achieved. Hopefully with the new glazing and repaired/reclad it will look better

Signage app gone in, there will be uplighting too, I really hope when its complete it'll change my opinion!

Quote:
Application Number 2012/03063/PA
Application Type Advertisement
Site Address Premier Inn Birmingham Exchange House Corporation Street Birmingham B2 4NN
Proposal Display of 7 no. internally illuminated fascia signs, 3 no. non-illuminated fascia signs and 1 no. externally illuminated hanging sign
One thing I don't understand though, there will be customer car parking, but Corporation Street will close for the tram, so how is this going to work!?

Just looked at the plans and I think they may be using the pallasades car park ramp in the future? there must be another way into the car park otherwise it would be made redundant when the metro gets extended

http://eplanning.birmingham.gov.uk/N...rod_DC_PLANAPP

I think this will look good with the purple uplighters

The windows will make the biggest change in this, the mirror ones look tacky in my opinion

Simple but effective makeover and will get more people in the city centre. With this and regal I wonder if they will sell off the broad st one or the one by the canal?

As posted in the New St Thread, I think this one will surprise us, the building doesn't stand out too much and replacing the windows and cleaning up the cladding should do it good

Work set to start on new Birmingham city centre hotel

WORK is set to start converting a Birmingham city centre office block into a new hotel following planning consent for the scheme.

Planning and urban design consultancy Turley Associates, acting on behalf of Aviva Investors, is leading work on the project at the Exchange Building in Stephenson Place.

The former HSBC building on the New Street ramp will be reconstituted as a 139-bedroom Premier Inn.

Construction work is expected to start in September, with the hotel opening in June 2013.

The scheme will also see a financial contribution made by the hotel operator, whose parent is Whitbread, to either a work of public art or to the Birmingham City Council’s Wayfinder talking signpost scheme that helps partially sighted visitors find their way around the city centre.

Fran Rowley, Associate Director, Turley Associates Birmingham, said: “We are delighted by Birmingham City Council’s decision to allow this conversion to go ahead and that there is a committed end user in place which will enable the earliest delivery of this key city centre project.”

Julian Cobourne, Aviva Investors Real Estate Asset Manager, added: “Premier Inn is one of the UK and Ireland's biggest and fastest growing hotel companies and is well known across both regions. This made it an obvious choice for the conversion of the vacant offices at the Exchange Buildings and we believe it will make a strong contribution to the existing local travel and leisure industry.”

John Bates, Head of Acquisitions (UK and Ireland), Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said: “This is a terrific decision for Birmingham city centre and for Whitbread. Exchange Buildings is a high profile site in the centre of Birmingham that has been redundant for some time and the Premier Inn will be a terrific asset for everyone.”

The development is expected to complement the refurbishment of New Street Station and is on the route of the new Metro extension through the city centre.

Turley Associates has also secured planning permission for a 175-bed Premier Inn in Bristol, a 108-bed Premier Inn in Bath and a further 82-bed Premier Inn in Leamington Spa.
