BT, not too bad for an advertised speed of 40Mb, as its usually around 37-38Mb, previously the speed was about 1Mb or less I think.

On that Speedtest site I get around 30Mbps, but on http://www.broadband.co.uk/broadband-speed-test it always come up with around 15Mbps... Why are the results so different?

BT promise me between 12mb and 76 mb download (that's some margin!) and up to 20mb upload. Often it's around the 20mb-30mb down and 10mb-15mb up (over wifi). I have to say I'm surprised how poor a lot of your upload speeds are compared to your download speeds?

(speedtest says I tested a server 100 miles away as it puts my location in Dorset for some reason, rather than Southampton. It's more like 70 miles to the server I tested with.)

Uploads tend to be 10% of download in my experience.

No, and the last time I asked this question was 2009.

On some days it can go as low as 6Mbps and as high as 40Mbps.

The internet speed on my laptop on occasion is shockingly slow for no apparent reason - in a year I'll definitely have to switch from Sky (Slowest) to Virgin (fastest). They often charge me unexpectedly high prices too (£85 recently!). Looking at broadband speeds in my area, Virgin definitely provide the best, with speeds, last time I checked, between 30 and 50mbps, and are cheaper!! What was I thinking..

Beijing's excellent Internet service...

A lot of the time it isn't painfully slow, thank goodness - but it can sometimes be a bit dodgy.
